Nice gestures and studies! Keep working on head proportions, one thing that helps when you're doing portraits is to look at the shadows shapes and simplify values down - the key to getting the likeness is all in the shadow shapes. Also, when you do your oils, *do not* start on a plain white canvas. Tone it a nice neutral color (burnt umber with a little black in it is good, you can experiment with different tones - just slop a little paint on with some turps, spread it all messy style so it covers the canvas, and give it a day or two to dry - I tone a few boards and canvases all at once so they're just ready to paint on). That way you can go both lighter and darker than the color of your canvas. Starting on white will make everything look darker than it really is when you're putting the paint on, resulting in washed-out looking paintings. The most important thing when painting is value - then temperature - trying to get the right color is dead last, just keep everything relative and it won't have to be exactly the color you see to be convincing.

And yeah, bigger brushes! Hog bristle! They force you to be more quick and confident.

hey, i like your sketch book, i am a want to be animator to so i guess we are similar in that aspect even though am probably going to study design and do animation on my own time. Anyway i think you should try to do some more extensive life drawings ( what i mean is that you should do more life drawings with more detail more shading and ect it helps a lot) anyway thats just me but if you could check my sketchbook it would be great

Nice updates. This one looks great: http://img233.imageshack.us/img233/2...aitbodyex5.jpg The face is rendered nicely and in a way that keeps the focus on the face which has the most detail. That's awesome that you got a wacom tablet, stay away from filters and excessive soft brushes and you should be alright. Anyway, just wanted to say thanks for stoppin by my sketchbook. Cheers'

hmm can't believe I haven't responded yet ArtZealot...well thanks for the comments and tips!

Here's a painting I did for one of my classes. One of my first Digi paintings in while...makes me sad I can't find the time to do more.
