Hey there!
Your hand studies come out really nicely - especially on those fencing drawings. Great job man!
The spoon looks great as well - as does the last portrait, though I think she would endjoy some more contrast?
keep it going, cheers!
The ladies in post 387 felt so nice, you really understand the positioning of the hips/chest...better than I can do in this type of study.
The new stuff feels pretty good to me, I don't have a whole lot to say other than the variety is quite nice. The forms of the portrait feel nice, perhaps the highlight on the tip of the nose makes it feel slanted. If you darken up the hair around the face, it will frame it and make the face stand out even further...so far good job!

fucking sweet values on those last two paintings! and really nice volume and construction to the girls face. planar studies ftw, yeah? =)
shows lots of progress!
now update! (like i should be the one to talk)
DANKA: Ya know what, I didn't actually realize that until you mention it, haha! Thanks.
Pascallo: Thanks dewd.
Jakers: Thank man. As for the figure studies, all I can say is keep it simple, at least 'think' simple anyway.
Torso - oval, hips - box. Bam. Done.
Flaskpost: Danke!
Being doing a bit of freelance work recently (yay), so haven't done much of my own drawing.
Here's a sparse few bit and pieces.
I really like the brushwork on your studies. I'd ask how you do it, but I guess it comes with the understanding of form. How long do your studies usually take?
isso09: Thanks. I usually spend 1 to 3 hours on a study, sometimes going up to 4 or 5.
Rendered the previous sketch.
I just finished looking through your sketchbook. Wow! You have really progressed since you started the thread. I love seeing threads like this where you can see visible progress. Keep it up!![]()
this latest concept is damn creepy. great idea!
maybe some textures on it? and perhaps multiple eyes? make it a little spider inspired or something.
Kongni: Glad you enjoyed it.
Flaskpost: Thanks! Yeah some texture would definitely be good. I'm planning to develop it.
So I was reading Gurney's blog post about satyrs and then I started thinking about mountain goats and what badass beards they sport.
I wish I had a mountain goat beard.

Needs more happy flowers, bushes, and mushrooms...so all the elves and bunnies will come out and play.
Make a sketchbook happy, feed it a tip to improve!

You've been working on the paints lately I see. Why the B/W? Are you getting these published somewhere? I like the bluish tint on the alien girl. Also the first one looks a little like Jason Manley...cheers!

cout<mecha: Published? Ha, I wish. Just practicing values.

awesome character sketch! i need to do more char concepts myself...
Heya man, I can't believe how long its been since I commented on your thread...I'm so embarassed. I have been checking up, now and then, but it always seems like somebody else takes the words out of my mouth first, and I don't want to be redundant...whatever, some lame excuse like that
So, wow, studies look pretty good, especially some of the painting stuff (train, soldiers, etc.). Figure studies look pretty good too... maybe could be a little tighter in terms of linework, maybe have more sense of solidity, but thats pretty nitpicky.
Two thing you probably should work on:
1. Need to take insights/lessons from your studies and apply them more effectively to your creative stuff. A lot of your work from imagination is too abstracted and simplified, lacking the subtle details and rhythms you are picking up on when you have reference to work from. Mostly you probably need to do a lot of studies of different subjects (drapery/clothings, animals, textures and lighting, etc.). At the very least you should be looking intensively at these subjects, and internalizing your observations.
Case in point is that last character study. Her anatomy and proportions look good, the pose is decent, ribbons look great, but the costume isn't making sense in terms of volume and drapery. Its too abstract and isn't allowing enough room for her legs/pelvis/waist to be under there.
Similarly, the goat dude is clearly a baa-baa-badass (heheh) but his costume, his hair, the shape of his head, are all clearly coming straight from imagination with not enough grounding in source materials. As a result, it looks abstract...the idea of a goat-man more than the likeness of a goat-man.
2. Just that you could really be pushing values a lot more, especially darks. Its possible that some of this is due to the quality your monitor, most LCDs nowadays artificially enhance value contrast and also appear rather dim. But, assuming that that's not the casepush those values.
Anyways, doing great, don't slack off![]()

Yay anatomy. I find it interesting how when people do self portraits they often look stunned, scrutinising, or both, reckon it's just the concentration? Meh. Good studies![]()
