You'd probably benefit from reading around the "Art Schools and Education" section of the forum.

Really, it all depends on what you want to do with art. Some schools are good with animation, some with illustration, etc... I can't really help you on specific schools, but if you post more specifically what you want to do, I'll bet someone can/will help you out a bit.

I'm pretty sure that the art institutes dont require a portfolio. They are decnt schools. The schooling is more general, so they have a little bit of everything in a degree. But if you want to do just fine arts, or something very specific, look elsewhere

I should just copy/paste the same stuff everytime someone asks about an Art Institute...

The AI of San Fran (like most AI schools) is accredited as a BUSINESS SCHOOL, not an ART SCHOOL (look it up here). They can only give out business degrees. What's the difference? You can't transfer credits if you want to leave as other art schools won't take "business" course credits.

There are TONS of good art schools in Cali alone. I can't imagine that an AI was the best you could find (especially if you're looking at the entire US).

    Art Center in Pasadena
    Academy of Art in SF
    CCA in Oakland/SF

Then theres also the Atelier routes.

Havent heard much of AI in SF, but most people I talked to regret going to AI schools in general. Im sure it depends on the person and such. I dont have any personal experiece with them though.

aicad.org is a good place to look for art colleges. Ask around, get catalogs, visit campuses, talk to students there. Browse through the forums here.

    Good Luck
