Next I'll make a block model for my Jedi Starfighter design:
and paint in the ships.
The background looks nice, although the entire thing is rather dark.
I suggest adding light to it. The ship itself needs some textures.

BLADES - Yep, I lasdded more lighter values to the paintong last night, will update the painting later. I've been saving the ship detailing for last.
Hey Jack, really cool steps. I think it all is working so far, if you add some weight (texture) as well as some shadows to the ships it would help this piece out a bit. I look forward to seeing what comes of this.
Working on setting up the next one. Should be rockin' when I get a foreground element in. Gonna stick in one of my Jedi Starfighters - tho I need to have a pilot getting in and I don't know who that's going to be. I should stick an R2/4 unit in there too.
I'm having a crazy time relearning Maya again. It's all coming back but man it's been a long time. I can't get the dang fog to work right, and I'm getting crazy artifacts in my lighting. I'll be glad when I'm smooth with Maya again.
Love this! Is this hows the next Star Wars project going to look like?Originally Posted by Jack the R

Uh - minor change. My idea for putting a Jedi ship in the foreground of the previous render turned out to be rather unworkable. It looks like there's plenty of space to fit one in, but the reality is, there ain't! I used a 15 mm lens to get that zoomy composition, and my camera is scraping the surface of the landing pad, so the jedi ship would have been huge and towering over the scene. If I were doing this as a straight painting, I would have painted the Jedi ship in and had a scene that couldn't be recreated in 3D. A concept artist I used to know, who designed the Nebuchadnezzar from the Matrix, called those "Eschers." I don't know if that's official industry slang, or if he made it up, but it's a good description for a real problem. It's easy to create impossible stuff in traditional media.
This version is done with a 30 mm lens, which might also not be so good. I'm going to have to find out how much leeway there is around the 35 mm lens before things start looking goovy. I think 30 should be o.k., but for all I know if the characters walk in from the side of the screen there could be a noticeable fishbowl effect.
