Wow, three replies in one day? What happened, did all the other threads get locked?

Thank you all for your crits. I think todays keywords are contrast, grounding and character interaction. Thanks for pointing that out.

Uhm... I'm pretty damn happy with todays update. Now it's up to you to point out all the flaws. Yay.

    [edit]: Page 3! Whoo!

Hey! Not a single reply from me on page 3 untill now, I'm sorry. I' wondering what you are up to with the gladiator? That first piece of this page is really nice, and that little balance issue can easely be solved by drawing a rock or something under his right foot. Very solid feel of the torso and arms (and the upper legs and the head too )... I like the face on the right from jan 31! Looks a bit like the guy with the big ears from other drawings, but there is more character there in the sketchyness. And I am starting to see some carefull dynamics keep on going!

edit: ah, the hand woman! I love the concept of it, and this version is a lot cleaner and more readable than the first! If you have the time to render it more, maybe you'll get some inspiration by danielC's drawings... http://conceptart.org/forums/showthr...hlight=danielC

Hey, thanks for your reply. I was in a very "Marko" (Djurdjevic) state of mind when I drew the gladiator-man. Very inspired by his process after watching his DVD.

Edit: Wow, thanks for the link. Amazing stuff.

Really liked the two drawings posted on February 4th. Anatomy and concept is beliveable. As of rendition the lower drawing with the guy with the horns is the stronger one, though I dont think it would be nessesary to outline the contour with such a monotone line. Haveing it accentuate and go lighter certain places might have been an idea? But dont get me wrong, it is already beautifully done. The drawing of the female with the skirt is also nice. I guess the main point of the drawing was to develope the upperlining(?) of the skirt, as it seems as this is where you have put the most effort. I notice that your line is much more interessting on this drawing than on your former.

Personally I'd realy like to see much more of the female drawing, as it seems to me to have great promise.

I'd also like to point out that plenty other of your sketches has great potential as paintings, and I do wonder why you dont find one of these and make a finished painting with the oils you got yourself for christmas.

Ps. And unfortunately I can't tell where your picture(6. feburary) is from, though it imediately reminded me of Jesus in "The last supper" by Leonardo Da Vinci. But so do plenty of long haired bearded men.

    Todays update is here: http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=89301
    No sketches today.

Glatteveier: One reason for not painting more is fear. I just gotta jump in it and do it, and don't worry that it's gonna be crap.
I really do want to try the oils, but I was thinking that I should set up a painting-atelier in another room. Two floors up, to be precise. 'Cause I don't really want to do it where I have it set up now, as that's also the computer room. And it's really difficult to find the time.

Well, it's not Jesus, but almost! It's one of his disciples, namely Jakob. At least you got the right painting.

You know i cannot actually believe i never noticed this about your drawings before (One week in art school and i am an expert already - sheeeeesssh! ). You do a lot of little lines. Even on the outline of the figures... i guess that's is actually where it IS more noticeable because on the inside you can consider it to be more like hatching. So, what i am suggesting is that you continue with what you are doing but try a harder pencil to create some softer lines (or like me draw in colour pencil or with a coloured clutch pencil) for the under drawing and then go for flowing lines on the outside. See if that give you a more smooth drawing. However if this happens to be a style you are developing then so be it.

One thing though, you are NOT allowed to put down your drawings in any way, shape or form when you post. You may not be happy with it but you have to say something that is constructive even about your own drawings. "stupid drawing" adds nothing to it, it only detracts confidence and self-esteem. Please keep an eye on how you talk to yourself as it is very important.

I actually really like that... what is it, a spartan? Athenian? Trojan? He looks really cool. And i have never seen the hand woman... ok maybe i lie 'cause when i typed that there was a little memory of something popping into my mind and that was about it, so i really like it!

Keep it up Anders and i will see you in two weeks!

Well, I guess it's not so much a style as a preference (as long as you're talking about the outline and not the "filling", as that hatching is a style I'm trying to develop). It's mostly when doing "straight" lines i think. I don't know, I'll try to be more aware of it.

One thing though, you are NOT allowed to put down your drawings in any way, shape or form when you post.

I don't know really... I guess he's a mix. I'm playing this game called Titan Quest, set in ancient greece, egypt and orient. I'm playing a defensive character and got a bit frustrated when you could wield two swords but not two shields.

and i will see you in two weeks!

Hello, good start, I think you need to do more anatomy studies. I recommend bridgmen's constructive anatomy.

Hey man, if the marko dvd turns you on, just use that bitch as a firestarter cause your stuff right there is looking passionate and improved.

-Posture on the second is really quite good, lots of movement. give her face some love!

    - The first.. what can I say, nice so far, but legs! Don't be afraid you can do it, just take your time and don't be afraid to use ref. His pectorals are looking a bit high on the chest and the posture coudlve doen with a bit more tilt but it is a great attempt.

Please go for it man, finish things, it really helps. I'm only just starting to realise that.

Hi Hai, just starting to check out the sketchbooks of our SSG.
Don't have much to say about these last one's, you seem to have given up on them.
I was going to say that the works you posted yesterday were worse than the one's you had before until I saw that they are older so... that means there was a lot of improvement, and that's good.

I like that robot from post #133, I would like to see you refine it more.

    cheers

Yeah, they're four and a half years old, so there better be some improvement!

Hi, I've got to say that these last two, show a huge improvement, also seem to have had more work, but I would say these one's are at a higher level. Some suggestions i have (I hope I hear this too), are start working with ligther pencil and do not press the paper so much (even if this is darker due to brigthness/contrast adjustements), use a good rubber, start shading ligthy and build up the darks using softer pencils for that. And overall try to take your works a little further.
yeah I also like to sketch without paying attention to that stuff, but i think it is worth trying.
    cheers

Hey, thanks for the super-quick response!

Yeah, I have a hard time finishing stuff, really. It's pretty sad.
I've been following Marko's approach since I got his DVD, not mixing different types of lead. (Goddamnit, there's too much talk about about Marko in this thread! What am I, some silly fanboy?)
Anyway, as Da Vinci lived: it's better to find the truth yourself, and not just follow others words blindly. Thanks for the tip.

Hey! I don't know whats on than dvd exactly, but it gives you a lot more dymanics. i only want to ginve a warning, this (great, by the way) post: http://conceptart.org/forums/attachm...1&d=1171294437
His left upper leg is starting to look hairy instead of shaded... Oh, and, the frequently recommended if you want to experiment with hatching techniques and line, you could use a fineliner or some other pen.
For the rest, imrovement shining from this page!
