Lots of updates!
your photoshop painting project: i must recommend that you put your lines as a multiply layer over a dark gray background. And then work your values and colors back in there. I tried it with my father christmas, and it really works great (for me at last). Anyway, don't work on a white background Also, i feel that the perspective on the background is more from above than the figure.

Last sketches: hey, do I see good paper? do you like it? Your lines are getting more under control. It might be good to try some more dynamic poses, they're hard but its really worth it...

You're right, but I think I'm gonna have to leave it for now. I mean the whole painting. I have more pressing matters . I'll try to finish it in grayscale though. I'll remember the background thingy for any future paintings

december 23: you seem to have a harde time to draw the schematics of a skull than to draw a whole face You might notice that the brains take more place than the face, so ears should be a lot closer to the face.

december 25: Those are great eyes, especially the top left one has a 3d feeling.
For the next time, maybe look at the big areas of light and dark where the hairs are (lashes, eyebrows). It's a classic and I think it's annoying, but it's true: "don't draw the hairs, draw the shadows between them".

These two pages are clear examples i think that you have managed to 'master', as you might say, to draw the eye from the side. It is one thing that makes a face look so much less amateurish,s o well done man. However you seem to still have some probs with the front view of the eyes.

Your studies on that one though show that maybe in the near future we will also see them being more realistic on the front view.

What i think i want to see though is more 3/4 views of characters in an action pose. so more like this one

(which is actually a perfect example of the thing i was saying about the eyes).

Maybe if you pick poses from magazines and newspapers and try to make them into something else, but don't finish them anymore than the one with the axe.

December 30th: That is a very beautiful idea, the hand and the bottom. But the execution lacks some ref, maybe. Her upper arms, mostly, and I can not make out what she carries an what the scribbles on the head are. But, please, abandon all things and work on this one! Photoshop yourself a ref, for example... no harm in that. Could her arms not be the fingers too?

December 31st: the ears could he a bit more forward still. Look at a skull in profile, the brain part has a very distinct shape, more rectangular than round. Nose and mouth (from the mirror?) are good, the eye and mouth could use more definition though. A page with one mouth study from the mirror is a daily update too

January 2nd: I hate soccer, but this is a very good exercise if you are feeling like it, you could try some more. Practise makes perfect You don't have to render them, just if it's not taking you too much time. Better block out the most dominant shapes, place the facial features and move on to the next. That will make you get the hang of it sooner.

January 2nd: This has some problems with it, mainly in structure of the body (torso and hips) and the head (jawline). I could try help you a bit with a paintover, but only if you want that. You could look at Mentler's old (the new one is mostly paintings) sketchbook. In there are a lot of examples to block in the structure of the body (hips, ribcage and belly). Just looking at it will help a lot.

Anders that pic is looking pretty solid with the anatomy, but you gotta be a little more specific what you want help with! that right hand is looking good but only if she is pushing something away or opening a door. and what were you hoping for with the face/head?

Concept: she is sneaking along a wall, approaching corner. The head... *sigh* Haven't given that much thought yet. All I know is that she'll be looking along the wall, towards the corner, and that she'll have lots of hair in a "crazy" haircut. The focus should be on the design of her clothes and sword really. Just need to nail the pose and anatomy first.

What I had problems with last night was the torso, especially the hips. I'm pretty happy with the shape of the arms, but they might be a little long? So... yeah.

Some realy nice work here. I really liked your eye studies, you realy got the eyes alive and belivable. Though the eyebrows might have benefited from some more work. Still getting hair right with a pencil is realy though. I dont manage it myself. Your combined palm and back of female is also realy nice.

I wouldnt agree that the two drawings you posted on December 3rd, 2006, 04:36 PM is bad at all. I like them alot.

I guess you're useing a mechanical pencil for alot of your sketches. I dont know wheter I like useing them myself yet. Though it certainly removes alot of the hassle of sharpening your pencil when your on the bus .

I think your drawing would seriously benefit from more contrast. It's rare that you shade your pictures with darks, or use the white highlights to its full potential. Instead there seemsto be a lot of subtle variations of grey . I suffer from this as well, it's a bit scary to put on those dark shades that will leave ugly marks if you try to remove them.

In short keep practising, you've got some stellar work here...

Hey man, nice work. I like what you're working on at school... it's good to sculpt things/clothing/whatever in 3d, much different from pen&paper fo sho!

I really think you should work on your sense of gesture and the grounding/weight of your characters. A lot of the time they seem to be floating on the paper with no sense of where they stand in 3D space. I also find they're kindof positioned awkwardly. In other words: more lifedrawings!!!! from photographic reference or otherwise, I think that'd really help you.

ANyway. Awsome work, keep it up!
