Greetings and Salutations fellow concept artisters! I'm relativly fresh to the forums, tis an honor to be surrounded by such talent that seems to eminate from CA. Quite inspiring!

This is meh first thread to show my art here, Hope you'll enjoy it. I'm currently a senior in high school, hoping to creep my way into a career as a concept artist. Blardy har, who isn't here heh. Here are some more recent works from my newest S-B. Comments are Induidibly Welcome! I'll update as my sketchbook grows. SO Let us commence the show!

Its my first serious envo, any crits or comments are welcome. If I ever plan to be a concept artist one thing I have to do good is environments, and I feel thats where I need the most improvement right now. : ) taker ez.

Hey man, you've some very nice work here! It's great to see folks coming out of high school with so much raw ability. Keep working hard though... It's real easy to get lulled into a sense of awesomeness and start slackin' in the studying department! You know?

Cute doodle! I really enjoyed the sense of whimsey and even mystery you gave this pic... Something about it is making it look a little bit flat though. Maybe try adding more contrast/darkening up the fore ground a little bit?

This hand is pretty okay... you did a really good job modeling and shading it, but a couple of proportions seem a little off. I think the thumb is a tad short, and the arm/wrist seems to be piling up on the top of the hand unnaturally...

I really enjoy how you're not afraid to go to town with costume embellishments! This character study is just lovely!

Nice studies here! Way to watch and play with forms! Great to see you using the whole sheet of paper with lots of little drawings too. Great job, man!

These are some really nice monster designs! Really creepy stuff... It reminds me of something... I think there was a monster on Digimon that was kind of like this. Really cool, if you haven't checked out that cartoon, you might give it a go. It's a little goofy, but they had some solid design work... kicked pokemons ass!

Keep up the good work man! You're turning out some really solid work (That environment is BAD ASS!), but there's a lot of room for improvement too. Your figures are over all good, but it's always a good idea to study more anatomy... get some books on it if you haven't already. I'm going through Hogarths "Dynamic Anatomy" right now... (a lot of other people use Loomis or bridgeman... I've never really looked at them, so can's offer an opinion) Also check out Mentlers SB... Anatomy is kind of his thing, and he's really good at it! It's a lot of work, and you have to take it seriously and treat it like a workbook, but the dividends returned are totally worth the time spent. Especially look at torsos, I think. I've been thinking about it, and the torso really seems to be the key to the whole figure.

Anyway like I said, great work and keep it up!

yeah. I'm going to bandwagon here. Work on the studies..... But definally keep it up with the character designs as well. :p they are really a treat to the eye. ^^"

You really flattter me too much though, I dont want my head to get any bigger than it is already. I'll be sure to drop by mentlers s-b, and I agree, It's always a good idea to practice anatomy, even if you feel you dont need it, its always beneficial to creating a good drawing. There's definatly room for me to improve, and your post/critique is shoving meh in the right direction, Thanks again.

nice stuff indeed! i really like the last digi enviroment.I admire people that have enought patience to actually render their pics, i'm just too lazy.It would be very useful to you IMHO to try and do some wuick gesture studies, and some full-figure anatomy studies too.Keep on practicing, and posting!

well..like promised I am here to visit your sketchbook and give my opinion. Really good work. I like more your way to make the mass and the light then your anatomy skills, but about it I should be silent!
I think that sometime you preferr to arrive to have a finished drawings with middle tone and details then to work more on the pose or the anatomy. Well... maybe it depends from your style but I am sure you could improve really more if you'd work more on a sketch before to put detail on it. My two cents!

I think also that you should work to make the subject more "divided" by the background. Ufff sorry for my poor english, I am sure to be not so good to explain, anyway I am watching the one with the girl dancing or running and it's confused with the background. Well, I hope to see you again on my sketchbook. I am subscribing your SB. Continue to work!

Alright. You do have trouble on your anatomy. Sometime it isn't obvious, but it's there when you take a closer look at it. Also you repeats the mistakes. =/ meh. I don't really care it's stylization or not. Your people will looks like freaks if you don't get the anatomy right.

Definally take a closer look at your face porportions. Draw hundreds of faces from photo refs if ya have too. Where do I start? One thing that stands out to me is the noses. It's seems to be the weakest thing your drawing. It's not just a thing that sticks out. =/ So far what you have looks like a triangle standing out or it just looks completely flat. meh. I think it's mostly how you shade it. Just think the nose is 3 balls on top of each other. Don't forget to highlight as well around the area of the nose. =/

From the chin to the hairline is divided, 1/3. The chine the bottom of the nose, the nose to the eyebrows. Then there's the eyebrow's to the hairline.

Also the part where the chin is starts is half of the distances between the bottom of the nose and chin. In comparison to your drawings your noses are often long. The mouth is too low on the the face or it needs to be smaller. =/

bleh. One of these day, I'll redline some of your drawings to show you what I mean. =/

*Watch out for the necks~ sometimes you draw them too thick for the body. ^^;;;

One thing that's going strong is the lighting and the shading.

I loved your stuff from the very first drawing I gazed upon here,
I like the style alot. Lots of action in pictures and I get a good feel
that you pen dances over the drawing as you draw, the shadings,
and fast lines tells me of that . Really awesome.

Also I noticed some nice decoration on few pictures, more of those
please .... I am a decoration freak, I can't help it !!!

The last ones without reference are quite sadistically awesome too.
Perhaps not all in perfect anatomy, but I care not - being the mutant
as I am, mwhaha - looking damn good out!! Nice poses and what not.

And the environmental work just blew my eyes inwards!!!
Now that is something quite different from all your works, it has
a magical feel to it and the colors invoke a really nice mood for it.
Show more of those as well .

I suck at giving critique, since I have so wide understanding and perspective
of looking at all kinds of art - unless of course someone truly makes something quite wrong, then I am sure to strike - , but I noticed that perhaps listening to your oh-so-dedicated rival, SillyLing, she can tell all the crits even without me, mwahah.

Keep them coming, I am always watching this place 'ere, I'll wager!

XD; neck was way too thick on her too, and my excuse was that I was in a very non friendly drawing environment when I reached her face, but did i stopp and wait..noo not me, tis my own fault. no x'cuses. yes, this is the right stuff, the girl ones look great, very posh rendering.MAybe, a little bit too much.Don't worry so much about cool paper and toned paper and stuff, just concentrate on the actual gesture.The male study just under the girls one doesn't look as good, there's definately something wrong in the dude's shoulders.Pick up a book by loomis, bridgeman, hogart and first, try to actually understand what you see.You don't need to know the name of each and every bone and muscle, but you'd better learn their position and fuction.Keep practicing damn it, you've got some great potential.Just keep posting will ya?!

Really nice pics, impressive textures, and lovely shading. My only crit is the chins of many of your figures, especially the women, seem a little...weak. They don't match up with the rest of the picture. That's my only sugestion, draw more chins (though your charicature doesn't need any work in that department). I think someone else mentioned this too.
Your hands are fantstic, I hope to be able to do mine as well someday

howdy. well most of the SSG thinks you're alright..just waiting one last response and you're in

on the shady side...methinks you need to work on your proportions when studying anatomy..the proportions of muscles as well as limb lengths can be quite skewed sometimes..eg int he 2nd piece, the abdominals are a whee bit tiny.

thaat enviro is dope! though its tending towards the slick side...mmmm...keep clear of THE SLICK SIDE....reminds me of LEGEND...that really old Fantasy film.

Hey everyone! man, thanks for all these crazy wonderful comments! there all so much appreciated! those crits Really really help me recognize what i need to work on, sorry I havent been updating very often. With graduation coming up I find myself short on time, to sketch or post. *shrugs* I'll post more soon i promise.

I'll address each of your comments soon too, but for now..some quick women face sketches I did, not perfect but..workin on it, I tried to stress accuracy more than rendering..blaaa, hard for me. XD

Halos Chain

Hmmmm.... I've been thinking and thinking about you, and basically have been putting this off. This is partly because I'm putting other stuff off, and that kind of gums up the works (Basically, the more stuff that I shouldbe doing, the more stuff I'm not going to do... Does that make sense?), partly because comments take a lot of time, and I don't want to short-change you (or anybody else for that matter...), and partly because I don't want to sound like an asshole.

Like I said before, you're turning out some really nice stuff, and I look forward to seeing you progress... Your mark making, and lune quality are both really tops, and I enjoy and appreciate your enthusiasm. It's obvious that you enjoy what you're doing, and that you pay attention to what's going on in the world around you.

My main two crits today (and the reason I've been fretting over this) are again... Anatomy. Seriously, this leads me to the second thing. There is a difference between studies and doodles. I want to qualify this comment by again saying that I like what you're doing very much, but there are obvious weaknesses that can only be addressed through (unfortunately) hard work and perserverance. In the introduction to "Dynamic Anatomy" by Burne Hogarth, he offers this word of caution:

"To behave creatively in art means behavior with skill; and skill comes from discipline, not derangement. The artist who knows the rules - and proportion is one of them - knows where to bend and how to break them.

What I'm saying here, is that the studies should be done from reference... And from reference I don't mean just from life... or photos... or drawings... or whatever. I mean from everywhere! Books, Photos, life, comics... The sky's the limit! But please remember that they are studies. Do them with trying to understand how (and more importantly) why they work. That way, when you do stuff out of your head, you can use the knowledge gained from this hard work to turn out stuff quickly and consistently and confidently.

You are using your powers for good, and I applaud that... but wouldn't it be better to use them for AWESOME?

Thats fantastic! Use this oppourtunity! Compitition is one of the greatest fosterers of growth... How do you think the trees got so tall?

king coyote as he so often does, put the truth to the youth.
doodles--> not of much value, save the fact that you are after all making marks.

studies--> more value, try to master your markmaking and make neat organized compositions of perfect craftsmanship. expirement less with materials and more with your own way of drawing. get in the zone and kick out the jams

finished works--> give these your very best shot, stick to a production schedule, (thumbnails done monday afternoon, wip due wednesday am, first draft due etc...) and use whatever means necessary to make images employ all of the things you are learning and the concepts that occur to you.
