Who's sketchbook?

Right, after a GREAT deal of lurking, I have finally plucked up the courage to post a thread, hopefully I can keep it up.

I've just turned 16 and am hoping to have some sort of career relating to art but not quite sure what yet.

Crits on everything and anything would be great.

Still trying to get to grips with digital, so I painted an apple from life.

Good start

Hi, try coping from life, observing objects, people and so. Your apple is good, but it is not finished yet, you could add more contrast and mark the light areas.
My Blog or My Sketchbook would benefit from your comments.
Thanks for visiting!

Jiina</> Thanks for the comment (: yeah I see what you mean by "roughness" I'll work on it
Cojac I'll try doing more life drawings in the future (: and thanks for the comment about contrast, I see what you mean.

I'm making a effort to post in people's sketchbooks who post in mine (:

Here's some quickies I did just now in photoshop

Some 30s and 60s gestures from a whole load I've done (not sure I'm doing these quite right, seems too flat and liney, will work on it) along with some Loomis anatomy studies and some sketches of my own.

Inspired by Project rooftop's latest contest, I did an aquaman redesign picture.

It's just the initial sketch with colours thrown over the top, I plan for it to be a finished picture some day.

Thing's I need to fix:
The pose/positioning of his left arm/hand
Not sure if the boots work with the outfit... may loose the webbed bits and/or change their colour

Please give me your opinions/criticisms (:

Hiya who! Nice stylisation on a lot of these. I like the watercolours. I'd recommend working on your anatomy some more(maybe some on the hands and feet?) and keep up the gesture sketches...your lines are getting looser already
(I keep reading the title of this thread as "Whose sketchbook? Aquaman's!")
For the Aquaman you should maybe do some more research on arm muscles, and maybe make his hands less angled(?) if that makes any sense. I like the outfit you've drawn on him, especially his belt.

I had an impossibly long comment here but my computer deleted it. hmph.

I like the blond guy with the dress shoes, he remind me of this.

I like the progress on Aquaman. I think you should add some thin soles to his boots though, maybe? The background is spiffy, though what's he doing? He looks like he's looking off into the distance, maybe at a passing jellyfish or something. I like the bird guy a lot, his visor is a nice touch. Though maybe you could extend the yellow on his feet into boots, or detail his toes so it looks like he's stepped in yellow paint? Cause at the minute I keep thinking that he's wearing socks :p Good stuff, keep going.

Saw the Dr. Who pic and had to stop by to say hi. I had a pic of a purple TARDIS as my avatar for the longest time.

Work from life: it will get you the furthest out of anything you try. Really try to understand what it is that you're drawing. Keep on posting.

You know what, although it's been a embarrassing 5 months since I last posted, I'm gonna get back on the wagon. I'm gonna post a few things from the last couple of month cos I don't want to have anything to old in here.

Pixie Trick : Thanks for your comment, I really appreciate it. I don't do enough life drawing, so I did the last picture which is a self portrait done from a mirror (:

1. Some Bridgeman studies
3. A male anatomy study from a magazine
4. A skull and facial muscle study done from here:
( http://www.bartleby.com/107/indextn10.html - warning NSFW )
5. A watercolour I did on holiday of the sunrise (scanner made the colours a little weird)
6. A quick picture of Forrest Gump as a kid from a screencap
7. A self portrait from a mirror

I'm struggling to wean myself off having lines in my digital works (as you might have noticed), I just can't get anything to look right without them.

A couple of boxing studies from http://mmaphotography.com/m/v/MMA+Photography/ (which is a really useful site for learning male anatomy, muscles etc along side interesting poses)

And a picture of my character Chip (: I suck at hands and feet

Great work already! Love the colour and everything.

If you're stuggling to get rid of lines straight away, use them at first and then merge the two layers, and try to paint them out. Or, paint your picture with the lines in, then slowly reduce the opacity of the line and keep painting. I've found this kind of works if you want some guidance when you start your picture.

Good to see you again, fellow art zombie. Nice stuff here especially the digital paintings, you're much improved at them(I think. Seriously, digital painting is like witchcraft to me).

I think you're cutting the legs on some of the guys too short. I like Chip's design, he looks like a cool guy, though unless he's only in socks his feet need some work.
His upper half is viewed frontways, but his legs are facing the side... His legs/hips should appear more turned and overlapping each other, as right now it looks like his upper and lower halves aren't operating as one.

Keep adding more stuff! Thank you for the links by the way

Mazetta: Yeah he's only wearing socks since I can't draw shoes. But I see what you mean about the legs and the torso not fitting together properly, it's a bad habit of mine.

Ladyknowles: Thanks for the advice (: I'll give it a try

Not much done recently, one male torso study, a doodle of a guy with a mohawk, and a finger painting of a tree done with some left over paint on my palette.

Good start so far, mate. ('Specially considering your age).
The digital portrait studies on post 19 caught my eye, definitely keep them up!

I'm afraid I don't have much substantial to say, just keep up the good work.

That white bush is really nicely done, I love the shading on it.
I like the Ariel profile, but if you're going for a realistic look her forehead should be flatter- sort of diagonal tilting back from her brow line, and move her ear up a bit.
The Doctor Who made me smile
