Hey all. I've been lurking around here for ages now and figured why not just bloody register. So here's a new picture. One thing I've admired about this place is it's constant ability to give excellent critiques. That's what I'm looking for.

One other note, I've been away from digital painting for over a year (been going to school), so in coming back to it I decided to work in black and white (baby steps).

Hrm.. seems really flat.. I think you may have too many brights.. and that might be distracting.. or just not enough variation of grey levels.. *shrug* not sure.. someone also said highlighs on her head.. I could see it being in shadow of leaves from the trees. but maybe you need to put some spots of light coming through or cast her whole body in shadow? sometimes if you dont make it drastic enough its hard for the viewer.. I deffinitly didnt recognize it as yours at first glance.. I really loved your old style I use to see on eatpoo... Your sungod and godess were awesome!

hrm.. you also have some good detail and strong edges in the background that maybe forcing them to seem closer to the viewer.. Im not sure..Just tossing stuff out...

mmmm...sweet sweet critique. Here's what I've done to it so far (based on what I've heard). I'm sure I've missed a few things but this isn't the last time I'll change it.

hey isric, good to see you here. pardon my slopiness, but these were done in a rush. just bouncing some ideas.

the updated version is much better (love the contrast, textures, variations in detail) and my only crit would be the focal points. right now, at least imho, the focal point in upper left (light protruding through the trees) is a tad too big and competes with the girl. i messed a bit in ps to see what happens

the second pic i showed the layout of focal points. what i learned so far, or at least i think i did, is that you should never lead the viewer out of the picture, and that's why focal points should never be set very close to the borders. for a good composition, focal points can be arranged to lead the viewer through. i'll play with it a bit more and see if i can come up with some constructive ideas about that. also i tried diferentiating the main character from the back using values. not sure if it looks better, but it can be used. i still like the original better (third pic up there). anyways, glad to see you around, nice to see the progress and hoping to see more of these in the future. cheers

p.s. that shadow under the chin is a bit thick and visually separates the head a lot, might wanna look at that
