    Artist-wannabe engineer

Going through grad-school now, studying computer architecture. Trying to make use of my down time by painting stuff.

    New stuff at the end.

For someone who doesnt take art classes, these are pretty good. I like the mech ones, for your figure work, if you get the chance get some anatomy books. Try to think of basic forms, the painted self portrait looks nice, but somethings get alittle wierd like the nose, but you seem to have the right idea.

Thanks for the crit! By basic form do you mean proportions or more like alignment? I have Drawing the Human Body and hogarth's dynamic body or something like that that I try look over from time to time, plus some andrew loomis' books. But they are all already so refined that they are like pictures already. But I'll keep in mind what you said and focus more on the basics. (think more generally right?)

for a friend, ~25min. the slight texturing is the result of a partial cover up of the previous (failed) attempt

inspired by annisahmad, car pics! It's hard to make it look illustrative, this was just a try at reducing stroke count.

self ref, kind of a joke, heh

tried to pay more attention to the basic form. But I think you were talking more about doing more thumbnail type stuff right?

these two were from the Closet Artists club I founded at UT Austin. This time we watched (a lot) of Project Runway to help us get inspired to do more clothing design

the soldier boy came out kinda crappy, maybe watching tv shows and drawing isn't such a good idea

You have something going on Omi-kun, something good. Some of the sketches look a little rushed, but the others look like you took your time, and they came together well, both in concept and in how precisely you picked out your lines. Might I suggest you avoid using a soft edged brush, or airbrush in your images, it is necessary, and make the painting look mushy. Keep up the good work.

I was just beginning to think I was abusing the softedge when I saw your post! But they're not all bad right? How else do you make something smooth looking if not blur it?

Well - most of your images don't seem to have any airbrushing, and they are sweet looking. The strokes of color that you are using, like in that self portrait communicate lighting, hue, planar changes etc just fine. Personally, I think seeing the strokes and letting the viewer's eye do the mixing and blending keeps the image lively.

bhanu: Nope, I'm not Japanese, but I read Shogun and fell in love w/ the name Omi, and gundams, evas, shiro's mechs, steel battalion, motar heads, etc. I don't read much manga nowadays but that might change. Thanks for your interest in my mechs, I have some more at DA if you care to look there. As for the mechs, I'll explain them when I flesh them out

some partial self ref, still gota learn more about anatomy, it's fsking hard from pictures or looking at my self in only one angle.

Hogarth studies, I do these every so often, I'm not sure if they help or not, cause I can't seem to remember any of these details I draw over and over again

A friend lend me SoulFire, some comic by aspen and I fell in love w/ the poses, they're so cool I wonder how do I find more poses like those? Anyone know?

and this is the new mecha (at the bottom right corner) is something that made me shriek with joy. I'm still fleshing it out, so I don't want to show it fully right now. But it follows under the jumping philosophy, a mech should be able to jump out of danger and be pretty damn agile, thus making them superior to tanks (other wise they are just tanks with a bigger profile). It's based on a different kind of leg design, something I hope haven't been used yet.

Ayumi Kinoshita, wish I didn't mess the drawings up

So you want aspen like poses Hmm.Try reading witchblade or aphrodite IX ,michael (creator of soulfire) first worked witchblade, and aphrodite is a work by david finch.

drawn from a pic of 于娜

no ref, posted this cause of the edge of the lips, it's a first for me to remember to do that

from ref, then designed the costume for her... not too good, looks like any other scifi genre costume

for my eventual story, the mech at the top left is a work in progress, really don' tknow how to fully arrange the legs... and the guy's suit needs to be the next generation g-suit, I just dunno how to make it look like that

random futuristic fashion that looks really horrible

and this is the mech I'm working on... the legs are the little tips at the bottom, they're meant to be dellicate and... some how transfer enough impulse to propel the mech hundreds of feet....

wow, really cool stuff!i like your pencil rendering damn much cleaner then mine , the anatomy even if you don't have formal art training loos really great, dig the self studies and the hogart work (it will help, I gotta find those damn books too). Most of the photoshop stuff looks too rush to actually judge, but you've got a good understanding of color and light...i'd like to see a finished work

    keep it up!

How do I suck at shading and everybdy else is god at it.
The guy and the girl in the you last pose have big head on their body. The girls' ass has some problems.Your last pic about futuristic fashion doesnt state much about the future. You studies are looking good.Sooner or later you will be able to put details by yourself ,dont worry ,just keep on practicing.

Wow 3 replies, that's so much more than I could have hoped for.
    Thanks guys for dropping by!
TheGnoll: I don't think I've made a finished piece in 3 years >_< I don't think I am capable of such lofty goals anymore, but I will try... with the soldier dude below
bhanu: Hmm, you might be right about the ass, but I'm not so sure about the heads, the girl maybe.... but the guy is pretty average for my ref pics. And yeah my fashion design is pretty blah, I was just thinking about how skirts and shorts will be even shorter in the future... I really can't draw anymore trends beyond that. Maybe even more layering?

Here's more mechs and military stuff:
I'm slowly figuring out what the leg should look like, after that I'll refine the top, but right now I'm thinking of a helicopter-esque turret mounted shortbarrel gattling gun, weapons bay in the back that can fold out like in the bottom left front view, and smoke grenades mounted at the side. The legs look pretty ugly right now though...

it just kinda came out of nowhere, and then I drooled over FF: Spirits within for a long time, still figuring out the thigh and stomach area..

    C&C very welcome!

Hey man, wanted to come by and drop a prop bomb. I'm digging the variety of shits you're pushing, especially the mechs. I'm always slightly envious of people that can handle them well, as I can't at all. But combining robots and cute girls is a great idea. The first digi. SP [or atleast I'm guessing SP] was well done. Your line weight with pencil is already there too, just continue those studies and it'll all tie in together nicely. And one last thing, this is all really impressive for an E.E. major. I have a friend who's doing the same thing, and he's a bad ass drummer. It's like E.E.'s have a double talent thing going. So keep it up man!

Thanks Zord! I don't know what line weight you're talking about, I think I stumble onto them every once in a while. Thanks for the encouragement. Girls and mechs aren't original (like Shiro Masamune is, who is a great inspiration) but I hope to craft up a decent story about the combination of the two!

Update, used a little bit of color picking from Mista Spooge!

edit> HAHA I just realized the legs on that soldier dude is WAY too short, LOL. Chubby soldiers of the future, hehe.

Art must be some malicious sickness akin to melancholy or lazyness, because it's killing my microprocessor programming grade by sucking up the last 2 hours instead letting me study for tomorrow's test

C&C desperately needed! This started out as a joke of all the sleezy armored girls out there, and also my desire to recreate an early concept of the Ghost before they added that horrid/cliche underware armor on her, cause otherwise I would've left her nude, but as it is now, I don't know how to paint white or light grey in shadow Help!

These are great studies. Your concepts are also kick ass. you need to change your major to art. That's some raw talent wasted. the only c&c that I can come up with is to make your edges sharper on your mech drawings. it'll give that metalic texture pop out more.

    great thread! keep it coming!

Wow thanks for the compliment even though I'm still not all that good. And oh yeah I know what you mean for the mechs. But the last one was just a real quicky, blew up a 1.5 inch drawing and painted over it just to check it out.

last update before the onset of finals

below: silly self refs, gosh I look like a cow on the left

I took my time with the folds and stuff on this one. But the belt area is still very iffy

pilot seat, mixed w/ a tank hatch at the top

and... a quick portrait of my friend, used every pencil I had to do it too: 2h, hb, 2b, 4b, and 6b
