good you redid this! it always helps redoing things!
I think you need some more perspective knowledge fore the shapes.
Search for some on the internet and you will find many! It looks a lot of work to make only 1 cube with perspective but it works! Also try to make things in 2pt perspective it looks more real imho. Cilinder is looking pritty good.

Ian- Great work on the last drawing. you have successfully accomplished the task of creating a 3 dimensional object with a transparent surface. Which is no easy task. Theres one thing that I feel would have given that specific drawing more impact and that would have been to shade in the bottom of the glass a bit darker even though thats not the way it may have looked to the eye but, for an illustrative standpoint i think it would have given that drawing more impact as well. Also, take into consideration that because its the piece of glass closest to any surface ideally that surface would create a change in shade to the glass. even if you have a white table that part should be darker to some degree.

cup-of JO- good work on that wine glass.. So far the best you've done. The structure looks good and the highlights looke realistic. My gripe with this drawing is the lack of range of values. Dont be scared to go a bit darker even though you see way. The only way your going to create a round surface is by creating a range in value.

Master Krepta- I suggest you read some of my previous comments to the other artist. good to see you working..
Mainloop- man i must be dyslexic.. cuz i thought you asked how many people are on lsd

here is my first attempt at #3. I changed over to wooden pencils, i seem to be getting better results with them. I also took kais's advice about blending tones together using smudge sticks .

nsae- hey there.. glad to see that you jumped in on these assignments... first of all... I would like to suggest you use some sort of medium other then computer for these excersizes. The best thing for a starting artist is to learn the tools of our great artistic ancestors before you jump into the 21 century.. Having that said your perspctive looks ok but, the artwork as a whole looks pretty sloppy. Read some of the previous comments I left to some of the other artists. I try to stress the importance of pride in your artwork even though it may seem to be remedial these are the building blocks of your trade. So, embrace it and love it enough that you would never want to do something just for the sake of working on a project. Learning is the key to improving. If you jut draw and learn nothing then you will never improve. good luck on your drawings.

Master Krepta- this is def. a step up from your last post. However your bottle still has no structure. Also, with all due respect to Kai's advice I think you should learn how to manipulate your pencil without the use of outside materials. You can get an amazing range of value just by using the pressure of your pencil. Learn how to blend with just that before you move onto other mediums. also take into consideration that most professional artist do not use a smudge stick. Usually it just "muddy's" up the artwork. Creating beautiful strokes and confident lines are the key to a great drawing.

Also, just a suggestion Ian. I think the next assignment should be to create boxes which should be filled with a range of value from ultimate black to pure white. Have maybe 20 boxes all equal in size and fill the boxes going from dark to light. The key is to change value from one box to the next. Sounds easy right. Well, try it and see how easy it really is. Each box should contain a noticabley subtle change in value. This will help you guys understand and get the hang of controlling your pencil and visually seeing a small spectrum in value. these boxes should be done neatly. Meaning that they should be completly filled, rendered in evenly, no lines outside of the inside square and this should all happen with your good old trusty pencil.

Also, if you guys and or gals are not finding any of my comments or suggestions usefull then please let me know. I'll save my comments and suggestions for another thread.

I thank you a lot, it's fantastic to get so quick and such a detailed help.
I will watch out to draw mith more care, I guess I should also just draw if I have time, becuase when I drew these, I was in a kind of a hurry.

Thanks again for your great help!

vigostar your comments are most welcome of all!
Your idea sounded good but I don't clearly understand it.
I have to draw a number of boxes(perspective/2d?) and give it a good brightness. so for example most left total white most right black midle one grey? (if you are working with 3 boxes)
but how can I draw a white box without a out line? you wil not be able to see it

I don't know this is what you ment but it was usefull for me I think!
Wanted to learn new shading, coloring technique's.
I made a mistake at the stylus. I don't have markers so I tried to work with normal color stylus and scan it in grayscale hoped it would work but the red was darker then the green probably

There is a lot response since I last posted. Good work everyone.

    Kei-th - Thanks.

JJohanson - I'm posting a new topic soon, be patient.

Cup of Joe - Thanks. The top elipse is lopsided. I realized as I scanned it. I will have to avoid it in the future, thanks.

Good work but you need to work on value.

Master Krepta - Not bad but you need to work on your perspective. You need to get your main drawing right before rendering.

Your third drawing is best but you need to work on your values.

Kais - No problem I'm happy to help.

Vigostar - Thanks, your probably right from an illustrative point of view. I was trying to get this drawing as accurate as possible but I thin the points you have said would have made it better. Thanks for commenting.

Nsae Comp - Welcome. No problem using painter, the same skills are needed. The main point you need to work on is soeding more time on your work. As Vigostar has already said " Treat each piece as a portfolio piece". That is good advice.

Master Krepta - It is better to stick with just a pencil until later, but thanks to Kais for the advice anyway. Your drawings are quite good but you need to work on your main shapes.

Dile - Welcome, good to see you here. Good work, it is better to stay with pencil at this stage. Digital will be later. Anyone can join in with any topic at any time, so you can catch up, no problem.

    Good work everyone.

    Topic 4

The main thing I have seen is that everyone needs to work on getting thier main shapes right first before any rendering. So for this topic I want everyone to choose an object and to draw it using ONLY line. NO Shading at all. Make the line drawing as accurate as possible.

Also I am going to set a deadline for it so that everyone will spend more time on it. So the deadline is:-

    Deadline - Saturday 15th April.

    Good luck everyone!

Thanks for the tips Vigostar! Re-did with more contrast, but was it too much? I also tried to rely more on eyeballing and less on actual measuring.

Tried the squares too. You were right, not easy! I reached white by 13. You can't even see the last fw squares after I scanned them.

Relly glad to see the response this thread is getting.

@Dile: That´s strange - I do have exactly the same glass standing around somewhere at home. Coincidence? ^^

@Cup of Joe: That´s way too much of contrast I think.

@Nsae Comp: I think you have to work on shading, as I have to. Right now there exist two possible outcomes in your drawing - shaded and not. But there are millions of betweens that we should try to show too

@Infinitum: Wow, that´s really good I think (or at least way better than mine, which isn´t that hard to achieve). I do think that the shadow of the glass viewed trough the glass is not entirely correct. It distracts me a bit.

I haven´t had the time for much drawing lately (school), but since now we have our easter holidays I decided to join in once more. For the transparent object I chose a lemon squeezer I found in the kitchen. While painting I discovered that even if it was not transparent at all, I would have a hard time to check all the perspective and such. It was fun though.
For T2 I first thought to hand in one of my other late work, but I found one of my old soft toys and decided to give it a try - I hate to draw fur, so it was an opportunity to learn it a bit at least. Also I tried hatching a bit more. I think him quite cute

Any comments and tips appreciated of course

Since I missed to draw an object using shading I decided to bring it afterwards. The line-only-topic will be ready at the date suggested I hope

Dile: Well, I dont know if I would have known without having it stand right at my side O
No, I think it´s at least definitely a "glass object" ^^

To those who tried my little assignment... Create all the boxes next to eachother and touching like if you created a ling rectangle and just divided it with no spaces in between. Cup-of-joe- its def. possible but thats where the difficulty comes into play. It seems much easier then what it actually is... I'll comment more later,,

First of all thanks again for the great feedback!

Here is my second try on the first lesson.
This time I sit down and did it not in a hurry.
I hope it shows some difference in quality.

I had some problems with the cone, espacially with the shadow/lighting, so i tried it twice, and with some corrections.

Nsae Comp: Nice, I dont know but I guess not all of them have the

cause if they have, the shadows wouldnt behave like that.

This is a great idea for a thread. I've tried the first three topics, am going to do the line drawing tonight.

    Topic 1: Shapes

    Topic 2: Small Object

    Topic 3: Glass

jjohanson: The "sprinkling" thing in the middle (where the water pours out) seems a bit odd. I don´t know how it looks like in reality, but my sprinkler at home has an even sprinkling thing in the middle

Catapult Beetle: First one is great, cannot find any faults except maybe the shadow of the sphere, I think it´s a bit too stretched. Second one is nice too, but some of the knives seem to be in an odd perspective. The glass is great again.

My humble drawings for the newest topic...:

(first one was a first try, but I decided to do a transparent one too, the cd box seemed fitting for that)
