Hi not sure what is happening on this thread but since I am basically just getting started here is the first project you gave out (at least my version of it).

hi there - good start.
they seem to stay .. aproximately on the same plane - and that is good already.
I will separate the value studies from the form ones for now. I know it' sboring but you stil lneed more construction.
Like .. draw the inner lines of your cube and the full base of the cone. Your cone seems very flat due to the fact that you have issues with elipses.
The "corners" of your elipse (the base of your cone) should be more round - try to exagerate just to give the feeling that the shape goes.. "around the corner" so to speak.
Draw the inner lines - like your shapes are transparent.. it will help more to the line quality.
put more force into it. don;t be afraid to ruin paper and all.
Andre Jones used to say - every bad drawing.. is a step forward a better one. so.. keep em comming.
hope it helps.
Hi Oblio,
Thanks for you input, I really appreciate it.
Yes I agree the cone really does look a bit flat. I think I was just just getting tired as it was the last item I added to the sketch. I am currently working 10 hour days Mon - Sat so when I get home I try to do some sketching or read more about drawing and such but of course I am pretty tired at the end of my days.
After November things will slow down and I will be back on a more normal work schedule.
Again thanks for your input.
Bill
Will try to get back and post some more of the projects from this thread.
Right now I am working on completing a course on Photoshop CS. I have completed my course on Painter X. When done with the Photoshop course I will work on the next project and post.
Thanks everyone for your time.
Bill
Well, i started to read this excellent thread and thought i'd post my attempt on the shapes too - so here it is.
a note about the quality - i have no scanner so i took a photo of the sketch with my digital camera and then resized it in PS(since it was in 6MPIX lol).
I am looking for some critique because i am totally beginner in this field and would like to get better! i also found out that i simply suck when it comes to ball-shaped shapes and objects, see for yourself..
Hi you all!
I'd like to make a quick remark about shading.
A lot of people in this thread a using shading where there shouldn't be any or no shading where there should.
For them I have a small exercise:
Get a small cardboard box (a anything with a cube like appearance).
Go outside and put it in the sun.
Now try to figure out why their is shade on one side and not the other.
Draw the box (with the shading you see).
Now draw the box in a different position (from mind!).
Put the box in the position you imagined. Does the shading match?
If it doesn't try to figure out where you went wrong.
repeat this a bunch of times and remember, try to keep it simple.
When you feel you get how the shade falls from a rectangular object(boxes and such), try moving on to object with more rounded egdes (cones, cilinders).
Remember if you can get it right, use references.
If you still have problems, you can post them here.
nobody critiqued me yet - i want to know my mistakes!
Sanstream - i take it that my shading is wrong...can you tell me what exactly?
Hi Corel,
I made some notes in your drawing (if you don't mind)
And some other advice, do the exercises I mention in my previous post.
um, sorry if I'm resurrecting a long-dead thread, but I thought the exercises would be helpful and felt bad doing them but not posting them.
Besides, I should really get out of the hermit-habit of only posting in my sketchbook.
so, my attempts at topic one + two - I couldn't figure out where the shadows fell on the side planes on one, so... I kinda guessed. any help with that would be loverly.
and two - novelty salt and pepper shakers.I figured they were 'interesting' enough.

Nice shading on the Salt and Pepper shakers Dominode. Its actually surprising that the other Foundations thread gets more activity seeing how it's 99% digitally rendered objects. I'm glad to see there's a place for people wanting to use old school tools...LOL. I'm actually going to whip up the 1st assignment and post it. Hopefully we can get this thread moving again.
Here is my go at the first assignment.
oo im going to try this as its what i have been studying about
