haha... this is my first post here... so i have decided that i will post a really awesome picture (not).

I have to shamefully admit that I entered this into a competition....
The good thing that came from this picture though, was that it motivated me to go get myself a WACOM graphics tablet....

crits are definitely welcome, but I will have to sulk.....
without further ado, here is the abomination..... hahaha

Neat design! Looks like you're getting ahold of the basic ideas about light and structure. Put your pencils and that wacom to use and give us more to talk about.

ok... quick succession of posts....

the Kappa (the green monstrosity that came before this) was done without the use of a good quality graphics tablet.... not that that's a good excuse for the crap-ness of the drawing... but anyways...

after being mortified at how bad the picture was, I decided to get myself a Wacom and painted a sketch I pencilled on the computer.... (?? what ??)
so here's the pencil sketch

On the figure itself you have some odd anatomy that's also helping mess up the perspective. Learning/reviewing anatomy is recommended around here quite a bit, so have at figure drawings and studies and whatnot. The coloring looks better than the last one - the hair color/texture looks good. Keep going soldier!

firstly, thanks for the praise! I'm glad you managed to find something positive about the pic... hahah

As for pencils... I'm not sure how to put that... but this was basically blended in Corel Painter.... and the tablet I used was something called PenPower Handwriter... which as the name suggests... isn't really a tablet for drawing with ! hahahah oh well....

hahah, yeah, the anatomy went a bit wrong on this pic... I really should go back and fix it, but i sometimes like to keep things as they were to remind me that I need to focus on those things...

hahah... this is another of my drawings... i done this originally as a birthday sketch for a friend of mine.... but then i decided to add some colour to it (though i think the original sketch is nicer... however i don't have a copy as I sent it away to my friend and I didn't have the brains to scan it before hand... )

anyways... yeah... here's the pic...


i'm really annoyed how the eyes turned out on this one in particular... and i also signed my name wrong like an idiot... oh well...pld:

Some of the shading seems like your reference had a secondary light source, but that it doesn't quite show up everywhere it should. Even so, that's a good picture - if you not satisfied with the eyes, why not do some practice on them on another piece, or just a piece of paper? And hey, keep posting more stuff and go say hello in other people's sketchbooks, you'll get more advice and critiques that way. =]

thanks again for the crits much appreciated. I see what you mean about the light source.. but I think that's more down to my inexperience... I'm finding the transition from paper to computer quite difficult.... and... I'm still just a beginner

Looking good so far, especially the hair which is tricky for beginners (myself included!). You might want to try 'tracing' only the lines of a digital photo in Painter or Photoshop, then deleting the photo, leaving only the lines. You would then put the photo in a separate window and use it as reference. This way, you don't have to worry about flaws in the lineart and can just learn the medium of digital paint. Plus, it's good to practice with photoreference.

I did this pic as I was inspired to do so after seeing this pretty girl on the MTR (tube/underground train)... she was kinda Gothed up... and the overall look of her was amazing.. something out of a manga....
the coolest of her features though.. was her hair... it really was straight out of a comic/manga! it was awesome.. I don't think i've done her justice really.. but... here it is....



being a bit of a creepy bugger, I actually tried to approach her and ask if I could take a photo of her for a reference because I wanted to draw her (I wonder who in their right mind would have said yes....? )... but she turned around to me, said something in Japanese and walked briskly (and speedily) away... pld: I obviously creeped her out... that's why this is called "The Girl Who Ran Away"

I would really like some hints/tips/crits on the background and the fur of her collar... I really hate the BG and am not used to drawing BGs... so tips on that would be great

I think... the light was hitting her from around the top of her... can't really remember now.. because it was a while ago i did this..

if light his hitting from the top..then there should be a shadow underneath her..and the back of her..where she's leaning on the wall..
i know there some great tutorials within the forum about shadow and light

umm.. i think you should work on rendering light and dark tones, and shadows rather than drawin cartoony type people... if you keep drawing more realistically, your cartoon work will get that much better, no one will ever open up a manga and say the artwork is better than some of the more recent american comic books, unless its something like samurai champloo which has decent artwork... although cartoony style of drawing is good way to learn (it simplifies things we notice about people and thats a good way to start) anime on the other hand is a bit tooo over simplified and some proportions are just completely over exagurated, and i cant spell.... keep postin man, well see how you turn out...

I gotta disagree on the manga vs american comics though... How can anyone open Ghost in the Shell and not be awed at the artwork? Especially Ghost in the Shell 2... and Tenjho Tenge also...

I think it goes both ways though.. sometimes, you'll find an american comic with really poor art, and possibly story too, and the same with manga... I guess it just comes down to the style you like and the style you are trying to head toward, or whatever....

I sorta created this as a character based on my girlfriend... when i sent it to her, she complained that it didn't look like her... I may have to go back and do it again...



the background was a little rushed.. but I'm still trying to learn how to do backgrounds really.... some hints on BGs would be nice
