my first matte painting

I normally prefer to do figure sketches and character work, but decided to try to do a matte painting this time.

I'm looking for tips on how to paint dramatic lighting (such as what layer types I should use i.e. pin, vivid, etc...) and how to paint a night-time environment. Thanks for viewing.

hey, this looks good, but I wouldnt guess it was a matte painting when I saw it..
it looks more like a draw over...
