Clean up those lines! Petting in your lines makes the image look messy and confusing. Try using some bigger brushes to shade, instead of scribbling in the shading. You'll get a much cleaner, nicer looking drawing.

Don't bother cutting out the negative space around a character, or colouring it in the forum colour, whichever you're doing. It's time consuming (you could be spending that time practicing!) and unless you cut them out perfectly, your characters are going to look messier.

Your concepts are nice, the costuming looks great. Proportions and anatomy are looking good as well. If you cleaned up a little and picked up some new shading techniques, you'd be churning out some absolutely top notch stuff (Not that it isn't quite nice already)!

Post more, and goodluck with updating regularly!

Thanks for the Comments! The background color is just a matter of the paint bucket tool in photo shop. I have the color number memorized. XP. 184, 172, 132! woo! I'll bear these crits in mind!

Here is the first of today's! (Sorry Ryn!).

AND the second character sketch of the day! I tried cleaning up the lines a bit! .

    And a shaded version!

Here is the first character for today! Sorry I stink everyone. I tried a little bit of forshortening, etc. on this one, but it resulted in poopiness. The folds on the clothes as well... And the hands...and the balance! Crits welcome! .

And the Second for today! I am going to do some hand practices! .

the anatomy isn't too bad, it looks like you're definitely studying but either A. clean up the lines even more (or add more line width variation but be subtle). or B. start adding more value to define the form, or both would be good too.

don't forget to make use of implied line.

when sketching try to think of the end result a little more when you're putting down a hard line, or since you have a kinda sketchy hand like me try putting down a lot more very light lines, pick the one's you like, define them and erase the rest to clean up. as far as value don't try to get too rediculous without staring at lights/shadows in real life and figuring out how they work for a long while, you know just the high left or right sunlight.

either way not too bad, the concepts themselves really can't be properly understood without a stronger line or heavier form, and i wouldn't worry about making the background transparent when you can be spending that time doing more doodles. (it worked in p4bl0's t'dome piece but that was for serious graphic effect).

    critique

    Hey,

They're decent drawings, but they're not really character designs unless there's a goal in mind. Otherwise you could just consider them doodles and ask for people to crit your drawings (which is what everyone's doing).

Design is about fulfilling a purpose. To really be able to critique a character design you need to know what it's about, what's it's use. The point is that a good character design doesn't have to look "cool," good character design tells you about the character. Think of how the dress of people you see on the street tells you about them. If you see someone wearing a spiked belt and some leather with fishnet stalkings and black hair you might think they listen to Marylin Manson and shop at Hot Topic or something.

Basically it's impossible to critique outside of the superficial cosmetic features (i.e. drawing) without knowing who the character is. You might consider reading some books that haven't yet been made into films and base your designs on the characters you read about. It would be more beneficial to you although fewer people would be able to truly critique them.

    ciao

    frank

I guess right now, i am looking for crits on anatomy, and the like, not neccissarily on the characters themselves. Some of them do have back stories, But i feel i lack the skill to get really into it untill i get some other stuff (Such as the anatomy, it's bugging me!). out of the way. I hear what your saying though, and it's much appreciated . These, thus far, have been either doodles, or experiements (For instance, the constipated looking fellow was my feeble attempt at some forshortening.). Thanks for the input! . I shall keep all this in mind! .
