Hey guys. Thanks for all your kind words. This painting is actually very personal. It is the embodiment of everything I hate about the art world.

Without being too artsy fartsy, here is a little more of my intent:

-It is a very complicated composition with its strength being its busyness. I want your eye to first see the two concerned figures in the gallery, then your eye is lead through incomprehension until you arrive at a resolution

-the mondrian painting mirrors the overall composition

-the room on the right has something going on, but it is not in your face. Notice the two figures in the left foreground of the gallery. . .blood is staining their mouths

-the figures on the stairs are suggestive of constructivist's paintings depicting industry

-There are rats in between the wall, much like the figures lurking above. . .money is falling down

-the blood stain on the right is both in the painting and on the paining. . .it is the final AHA!

here is a little more detail of the room on the right. P.S. Chris Appelhans is a real inspiration

I will try to address the issue of clarity. I am just afraid of too many focal points will cause the painting to look like 2 separate paintings stitched together.

Also, just to address this issue. Concept art and "ART" for enjoyment are two different things. Concept art is not really debatable. It needs to have a clear intent. People use concept art in a pipeline to get to the next step of a production. The modelers can't guess what the hell they are looking at. And if you have to explain what an image is to a business man or art director, you haven't done your job.

However, paintings for other people to enjoy CAN be debatable. It is the difference between a PIXAR film which is very clear and spoon feeds the viewer, and say a David Lynch film which is more smoky and obscure. My painting is just for enjoyment and hopefully the enjoyment of others. I hope it is fun to look at.

Look at this Turner painting. There is obviously a story going on here. Now, within two seconds, can you tell me the story about this slave ship. No. It takes a little effort. The value range of the water is very narrow, so it is a little unclear. It's not about ramming the story down your throat. But you can feel it. If you saw everything little thing that was going on, the painting would lose what makes it special. It is not necessarily a clear composition, but it IS a very sophisticated composition. This painting is gorgeous.

Now I would never have the audacity to compare anything I have ever done to Turner. But, this is a little more to my taste. I would never try to bull shit my paintings. I want people to "get it." And if they don't, that is my fault and I will try to fix it.
