Re-beginnings

I used to do sketches semi-regularly in a small art section of another forum, and I really liked getting crits and opinions from other users. I recently picked up my sketchbook again and, finding that that section of my old forum is essentially dead, ended up here

I decided to stop completely wasting my time spinning my wheels on purely original work and to try and pull some of the fundementals that I had always ignored, and so I submit to you, my new beginnings here.

I've started doing a bunch of photo referenced drawings. I've barely started and I already feel like I've picked up a tremendous amount over my past efforts. I think what I really should do is do some bone and muscle studies, but doing "complete" sketches from photos ended up being a lot more fun than I expected

I guess I can only make so much progress at once, heh.

nice sketches, one thing i noticed though, the tennis players left arm, (the one not holding a racket) looks a bit weird, i can't put my finger on what it is that bothers me exactly..

The arm thing is this... the forearm is too short. Simple fix! Hand is too little as well it seems. The arms on the guy directly to the left have issues too (bicept placement on the right arm, elbow placement on the left) but easy things to fix.

The girl in the center at the top if pretty sweet... keep it up! Work on the proportions and anatomy.

Thanks, that hand was a tough shape to get out of the reference for some reason, it never quite came acros right with a forshortened forearm. I had completely run out of steam by the time I got to the climbing guy, and that one's all over the place :p

The center girl is also my favorite, also happens to be the very first one I did, heh.

A lot of time passes, and not a lot of drawing gets done but here they are all the same, good, bad, and ugly (well ok only some of the ugly)

Now this one was interesting, saw the shape in my kneaded eraser and just ran with it. I like this little guy, I expect I'll be drawing more of him in the future.

Tried drawing stuff on the TV, it moves by a lot faster than I expected. So instead I drew my brother laying on the floor

yeah I would advice you to do that !
Keep it up, looks good already, but most thing seems to be taken out of your imagination.

Well for now the only the one's I specifically mention are done without reference. Everything else is drawn off of photos.

Trying to be a little more selective with what I post 'cause I'm lazy, but it means I'm drawing more so that's good.

Ugh, droopy eye.

Picked up a copy of Anatomy for the Artist. Good stuff.

Experimenting with simpler shapes, and trying to focus on their relationship to eachother.

Well I ended up getting completely swamped at work (sys. admin) and haven't managed to do very much drawing since I last updated, but for the new year I've quit my job and I'm going to take advantage of a couple months of being unemployed to finish an animated short I've been working on (in 3d)

As part of that I've decided to do at least one self portrait (and two hands) a day. So far my first one has looked the most like me :/ . I've been stretching the heads out vertically, gonna have to keep a closer eye on that.

I'd recoment you to study the shape of skull and head, and shade them, because your faces look pretty flat.

Well a motorcycle accident has left me with a broken clavicle and kind of put me out of commission for a while. still trying to do some work while trying to regain full use of my left arm again.

Will defenately do some proper head studies, thanks. Ive been doing some arm studies. Also some random doodles and some half finished concept work from the short I'm working on.

It is good to see you focusing on studies.
I think the more you do them, the more satisfied you will be with the outcome of future drawings to come.
I think you may want to throw a couple animal studies in here as well.

I've been trying to find the action of a pose a little better, and trying to get myself to spend less time hatching back and forth over a line, with varying degrees of success.

Try this:

at the moment your lines seem very unsure of themselves. What I mean by this is you tend to keep going over and over the same line again and again to get one single line down. Instead try drawing with a pen just for a week. No eraser no nothing...just the pen (and a sketchbook of course duh

). While you are sketching tell yourself that you cannot go over the previous lines...they are finite. Try to stick to this until a drawing or sketch is complete. It will help your lines a ton. Plus hopefully you will gain some good observational skills out of it because you will have to observe the reference more carefully....

I think im making sense here. Don't slack off....because that will be the death of your art. Keep it going even if just some random things pop up until you can sit down and put some real time aside for yourself.

Thanks, I just recently ran out of ink for my pen, just been too lazy to get a refil, heh. I definitely end up trying to "find" the right line, not helped any by the fact that all the sketching I'm doing on the train I'm trying to do even faster. I really need to make more time for slower drawings.
