A suggestion: I'm not sure what medium you're working with, but I might suggest working with soft charcoal pencils. The medium is a lot more loose, so you might have an easier time forming tones as opposed to hatching the shadows like you are. Also, if you're working with a model, doing some quick, 1-5 minute gesture drawings of the figure will help you warm up for a longer pose. You can do this working from a photo as well, but drawings always seem more dynamic when drawn from life.

Oh, and don't avoid the "naughty bits" of the male model. May as well make him complete!

It's been awhile since I posted so i figured i better get some stuff up. Just two characters i got a few other things that i will post tommorrow. I will have some props soon and environments. Trying to do some different stuff, gotsa learn.

watch the shadow near the bridge of the nose, without it your faces seem flat from some angles. and don't neglect the forehead area! at least add some shadows from the hair or something...your concepts are getting really creative, i love the one you posted a month ago for the CHOW, you should redraw it fixing any mistakes and render it completely! you need a few complete renders of these guys you draw and add some more angles, still to round in my opinion, esp the guys (not fat, but round forms nevertheless)

i think the hair might be a bit strange under the jaw, maybe add some more darks...it looks kinda pasted on (just that part of the hair)

First of all, thanks for commenting my scetchbook. You got a lot of good stuff in here, and it seems that those anatomy studies are driving your skills in right direction. Finished charaters and thumbnails look awesome, but you might want to consider drawing more perspective basic things. Im sure they would also help you to get those heads and hands right, since you seem to be struggling with them. Anyway, good stuff and keep posting.

Tmza-thanks. yeah i think that i'm going to do more studies like the one below to help with my perspective and some basic line perspective stuff.

Hey, unbreakable!! It's been a while since I paid your SB a visit! I'm seeing nice progress on your end! I definitely commend you on the full-body drawings and sketches!!

That being said, I notice that many of the character sketches have a stiffness to them, like they're figurines. If you're working out the proportion still, I can see why you mightn't bother with the movement so much. However, when the time comes, hopefully you'll manage to bring even more life into them!

With the latest still life picture, I see a perspective issue, noticeable on the book. It's hard working out perspective, though! Good GRIEF, is it ever! Still, I think you're getting there! The colours are good so far!

Keep up the good work! ^_^ I'll check in again sometime!

I haven't checked your thread in a while. Good stuff. I'd say make the drawings look more dynamic. I agree with previous post...some of them look a bit stiff. Well, keep it up and maybe you'll be working in the same studio as Marko oneday 8)

I like the progress you've made in your book already...especially with faces and improved design...interesting forms in your creature (though I dont know animal anatomy hardly at all so I couldn't say how believable each section is) Those small thumbnails can lead to great designs, cool to see you've kept practicing them. Perhaps try playing with some more saturation and contrast when you color to make your characters even more readable.

your rendering is starting to look nicer! great hand studies. BUT you need to use some opacity in your brushes man! >.< (the sky in the environ)

this environ looks like a gazillion times more improved than the one you did before steak-tron crit'ed your sketchbook. it has nice lighting.

sweet gun designs. prolly your strongest stuff. on skintones, remember that skintones aren't all light and darks of the same color ^^ great studies!

I agree with hp's last comment... not only is skin not just different lights and darks of the same brown/tan/peach, but it's affected by the lighting on it/through it. One thing I always do with my (traditional acrylic) paintings of people is laying down an under layer of cerulean blue... when you layer the browns on top of the blue, it will glow with a more realistic skin tone.

Unfortunately I haven't yet figured out to get the same effect with digital or oils... but it's worth experimenting with.
