Yup photo texture i am no purest. Best way is to paint the dust in as much as possible and use the photo on overlay at a low settting to blend it in. Clone stamp and warp and liquify can be used to position it properly.

    Cheers Mariusz Kornatka

This is the last fully reffed pic i will do. Boredom and a feeling of this is pointless hit me. I only finished cause i had more than half done.

Edit. Adding original pic. My reffed version is not a exact copy i did try, but some parts go askew and then i try and fluff them together rather than redoing. The plane is especially poorly done by me. Hmmm her head looks big also.

wow, you knocked this one out of the park. i really had to look to see what was painted and what was photographed. your values ready very well. i would say that the only place that gives away the painting is some minor flatness around the face, primarily the jaw line or something in that area. cant quiet put my finger on it.

i cant wait till i get to the level of expertise to be able to render this well.

I really love this sketchbook - and seriously hope you keep posting more. Your figures are very cool. One critique I have is that usually womens abs are never drawn as defined as that, even in comics, but instead the general sense of strength is given by a few lines suggesting the abs (rather than clearly marking them out like a mans). Saying that if that is your own style theres nothing wrong with it!!

Like your environments too, and generally feeling inspired to try some environments myself tonight. Thanks for sharing

Thanks lolbbq. Now that you mention it i think her mouth is to close to the nose or her jaw is too long. Good call. I edited the post and included the original.

Thanks the ANGRY filipino. I picked this pic to ref because she is clothed. I can spend hours study the human body try, and get the muscles right and then have no idea how to draw/render convincing clothing that is cover it.

Thanks ThomasM. I learned to draw from comics after that when i drew people it was all about the muscles get them right and i have perfect human body. I know now that this is wrong but bad habits are hard to break. I am trying now to base the body on skeleton, pose, weight and outline. But easier said then done.

DSG 1562: Sci-Fi • SMOOTH-SHELLED HOVERSHIP (fg) ENTERS CAVERNOUS METRO INTERIOR (bg)

I had a definate idea for this. But because i was working i couldn't start it till about two days after it was posted and my idea had already being done. So i threw some photos together see what i could get.

This was poorly put together and it shows in the final. I spend more time trying to cover the obviously photos bits up than if i started from scratch. Here is the only old work in progress pic i didn't del. Pretty much just at the start.

This is final version of actual drawing/painting.

This is the above with colour correction. Warping and tweeks no painting just using photoshops tools. Lessons learnt, is spend a bit more thought at the start and it will pay off at the end.
Not a pic i would include in any portfolio

That reffed painting is insane, holy crap man... o.o...
And loving the enviro. Some advice would be to watch the edges on things in the foreground, and also, push the contrast in the focal area. Like stronger darks and lights. I always think to exaggerate things a bit. It may not be that way in real life, but this isnt real life, its our interpretation of real life so push it how you please.

Anyways, great work, and i'll try to drop by and show some love more often. Ive been a lame subscriber

Cool updates! Of course I've seen the dsg ones, but the process shots give interesting insight. I think you pulled off the clothing and plane in that photo-reffed pic superbly. Her head isn't too big, although you shifted her features around somewhat -- an easy thing to do, and that'll slowly work itself out the more faces you do.

Still love that ship design. Pretty women.

Solid updates -- Thanks for posting!

Take a boring design bring into liquify filter and ..well liquify till you get a more interesting look.

DSG 1567: Sci-Fi • SOMETHING W/ A ROCKET SHIP ON THE LAUNCH PAD & MAYBE SOME BUILDING.

I am quite happy with this. I wanted to do a city scene so i pulled out some ref and thought holy fuck i can draw that my fingers will fall off.
Than i put this idea of rendering every building correctly, using persective, etc behide me and just sketched it in roughly. I am quite happy with the results, and it a lot quicker to do than i thought it would at just over 2 hours.
The ship as you can see from below was just blobbed in not much thought put into that.

So if any lesson was learned by me i think maybe less rendering more drawing.

Nice work Mitze. Sometimes you lose perspective or sharpness (sometimes your textures look smudged), but colors and values are definetely catched. Don't forget little detailes - like post 319. Despite girl's pose I like it, but you should've make eyecontact between tree and girl, because right now she's unnecessary here. But if tree would've glanced on here and made some expression - they would've connected.

Anyway - good work and keep going!

I love the colors on this picture and as everybody's been saying, the woman standing on a wing study looks awesome! It looks tighter than the photo somehow. I think what I like most in it is the combination of smooth brushwork on the lady and background and the textures that you've used on the right spots in the right amount on the plane to give nice sense of material. On your other paintings, I think using the textured brush so much sometimes causes gritty edges where sharper ones would be desirable (like the figures' heads and the lighted railing on the foreground in the last pic).

Your black and white portrait studies look really solid but sometimes your figures look stiff. Some of them, like the one in the middle on this page lack some sense of weight IMO. 'm not sure what she's sitting on. If the surface is that slanted, there should be more weight on the feet IMO. On the standing poses, cast shadows could help give more sense of attachment to the ground. You've done some great studies of figures on the last pages but I think quicker gesture studies would be useful too for making up natural looking poses.

    Keep up the great work!
