Thanks for dropping by wow2006. As for any advice. See how other people do it and copy them use ref but mainly just keep drawning.

Three quick pics laying off the ref and finished pics for a while and going for speed paintings all from imagination.

First one quick landscape pretty rough trying to be a lot looser than i usually am.

Second one another speed paint a lot more finished looking a lot less in it than the first one. I don't think the composition working with the sky behide it probably shoul have but more mountains in it.

Third speedy tried a city this time. Perspective was off and the way i painted the above dose not work for cityscapes. Gave up on it. The thing about speedys is mistakes made are only a waste of a hour or two.

Enjoying these going to keep at them for the next few weeks.

Some quick pencil life drawings all reffed.

And another landscape. Was going to add a knight on horseback but changed my mind.

I've scrolled through your stuff. And my first and most important suggestion is: STOP doing these so-called referenced pictures. No offense, but most of them look traced, color picked and/or overpainted. And even if they aren't I think that you could use your time better by drawing real studies or imaginary stuff than by spending long hours hardcopying a an image pixel-by-pixel. Someone already mentioned in one of your Critique center thread and I can only second it: If you happen to love copying, then do master studies. Copy classic paintings. You can learn much more from it than by copying some random photo you've found on the web.
Why do I say this? Cause your referenced stuff looks nice, but your totally imaginary stuff is not that good at all.

That oak tree thingy in post #266 - blurry and unstructured with inconsistent lighting - kinda hard to figure out the structure.
That pic in #268 with the lying robot... not bad , but the color scheme is a bit boring and the texture of the robot is too homogeneous. Inconsistent lighting again.
That robot guy in #270. The design looks promising, but the color scheme hurts my eye. And the whole image is covered with some kind of a random noise wich looks like some jpeg artifact - like you'd have saved the original image on a low quality. This noise can be seen in far too MANY of your pics (like in the background of that guy in #244) and I'd really like to know what this is - as I wouldn't assume that you'd ruin your nice-looking pics on purpose while saving as JPEGs.

What I suggest: Do some color studies, do some lighting studies, do some anatomy studies - emphasys on 'studies' wich means don't hardcopy but try to capture the essence of the pic. Hardcopying leads to nowhere.

Thanks midknight523 for dropping by i remember your stuff from digital Webbing.

    Thanks Novbert.

Tough crits. To try and answere some of them. I do photo ref stuff cause i can and they look a lot better than my own stuff. But i am going to try and lay off them for a while and concentrate more on my own stuff.

Inconsistent lighting and structure etc. I spend more time on rendering than drawing and that shows.

As for the noise on the pics lot of reasons for that the main one is i use unsharpen mask. Maybe i will tke it a but easier with that in future. Oh yeah and i add noise on all my pics habit now. Note taken will stop that.

Thanks for the crits notes taken.

Thanks Mac Con for checking out my skbook.

Hey there, throwing in my two cents: the digital pics could do wit more coherence in the brushwork, but overall you've got a nice solid foundation. Like the drawings and really like that Junkyard Golem!

Very nice stuff Mitze, love the landscapes.

I'm curious when you say 'speed paint' on that great shot of the character hiding from the robot...how long would you estimate that took you? Just curious to know what constitutes a fast turnaround.

Mitze - Sorry I haven't said hi in a million years, if ever, but hi! Love the daytime over the night. Did you post that alien butchershop? I don't believe I saw that one! Beauty. Your composition and colour on that red rock is lovely! That cowboy and alien kicks ass (although I can't help but think you should, ever so slightly, lighten and haze out the furthest away edge -- that line is fighting its way forward). It's so good that you participate in the DSG as often as you do (So, thank you!). The speed-paint of the chick and the big bot is pretty friggn cool. Oh, yeah... that one of the ship headed toward the cloudy tower... that tower has such crisp edges, but the clouds have none. They should.

Awesome work man, your studies are real nice - good structure and lighting and everything!
But some of your speed paintings lack a little bit of that realism which you get in the studies, mainly because of your basic setup i think - maybe spend a little longer planning the image to start with, or at a certain point work it in to make sure all your perspective is place and all your shapes look right - maybe use reference as well, for the shapes/colours and perspective. But not copying - looking and applying it to your own work.
Youve got such good observational skills in your ref-work - just make sure you transfer that to your own paintings and theyre gonna be amazing.
    Keep up the hard work.

Hey Mitze, I see your work very often in the DSG, and I'm always blown away by the speed you can put out these paintings. Very awesome work in your sketchbook, your anatomy has definitly shaped up, and painting..well you seem to have always been good at painting. Keep up the inspiring work man!

    EBrown thanks for dropping by.
For me speed paint means i don't try to render every bit. The women hiding from the robot guess 3 to 5 hours.
I am sorry i said speed paint. I don't like the idea that a pic should be judged on the time it took.

William b. Hand Thanks for dropping by. And thanks for taking the time to crit.
I love the daily draw off, just do your pics, sometimes very little to do with description. No Judgeing, no not been accepted. Just pics.

Thank PHATandy .My speed paints where like a tonic to the ocd ref painting i use to do. But you are right .

Thanks Hamorhage . And i am not a fast painter . I work for the gov and such have a lot of free time.

I really like the last DSG you did, I think it would help some if you broke a few edges, it tends to make things more realistic. Keep doing more quick paintings though, really gets you a lot of mileage

Hey Mitze, haven't been by for a bit, sorry too much to do, too little time. AS you would know, log on to CA and spend hours.
Your latest stuff is looking great, 273 - nice, 278 nice, etc etc etc. Thought Novbert crits a bit harsh, it depends where you're at, and where you're heading, and that has to be taken into consideration. There's a guy here at CA who is a professional artist and teacher, who says copy copy copy, use reference a lot, or you will never learn, or words to that effect, I figure he might just know something(Whittaker sketchbook). Check his stuff out, it's awesome. Art is in the eye of the beholder, what one likes the other hates.
We all want to be good, but get too technical, and it takes the fun out of it, for me anyway.
Please check my SB and crit, I need help.

Thanks Kvick. Good point about breaking the edges. I will keep it in mind.

Thanks arestocrat. Yeah i should do more classic painting studies. And it might help as i am in artistic block mode for the last few weeks maybe longer.

Thanks for those kind words doncam.

Last month or two i can't draw, nothing is coming together. The cowboy pic with ship was ok posted earlier (post 287), but that was one in a long time.

Anyway below are some of my unfinished attemps from last month or two.

And the latest DSG which ain't happening either and went totally off topic. But at least i managed to finish it.

That striped aircraft is kickass. Love that thing, I do.

The MMA pic is like all the blood was squeezed out of the art part of your brain -- I know what that's like.

And these photo-reffed portraits are just marvelous. You are really learning a strong sense of form and lighting and the values, proportions, and humanity are super. Great job!
