Snowflake

Thursday was our first day of snow in Toronto, and its basically been snowing on and off lightly since then. This morning i noticed this little guy and had to grab my camera.

sweeeet! Its so hard to capture snowflakes. Awesome picture of the snowflake, but I feel that the composition is slightly lacking.

Seeing as the snowflake was so small in the frame it was hard to compose it on a basicaly plain black surface. So i put it in the centre to try to contrast a sea of black with the one snowflake. I wish i had a macro lense

dont we all. its very nice. it has a very cold, yet rather inocent spirit to it. What sort of amera do you use?

I use a Canon 20D - an 8.2 Mp digital SLR and took the pic with a 18-55mm lense @55 i think

damn awesome camera, now i just need to accesorize with lenses

looked in too the meta data, you took the picture at 55mm
and shutter speed at 1/60 !?

i thought you used a wery fast shutter since the snow flake hasn't
moved at all

The flake is most likely static barret. I guess he wouldnt need very fast shitter speed for that.

Oh, and i absolutely agree! Nice pic!

Nice pic and good eye for spotting that little guy

Someone mentioned that they thought the composition was a little lacking. I dont think that the composition is bad at all, but I thought I would play around with it anyway. What do you think of this crop?

not better than yours, just different. Its a shame the rest of the leaves werent cleaner though. I guess it could be cloned out in photoshop, but I'm not a big fan of doing that. Oh yeah, and I couldnt add your frame back in. I'm at work and am using Microsoft Paint. Also, It could use a wider tonal range to help the snowflake jump out a little bit

The snowflake was static - it was resting on the car and thanks for all the lovely comments!

And Jive Turkey maybe its jsut me but that composition makes me feel slightly nauseous because it looks just off gravity whise heh.

But you did put the snowflake in the third, although i believe that in certain instances you dont need to put the subject in a third - for example a small white speck in a sea of black could be in the centre IMO heh, and anyways i couldnt get any closer so placing the snoflake anywhere else in the picture would have just looked odd to me :p

ShadeofDawn- I agree with you, your original composition was better. Since someone made a comment about it, I thought I'd play around with it. I know its kina amateurish to just fire the focal point in a third of the pic and say 'voila'

I just thought it worked well with this one because of the lines of grass leading up to it. Anwway, despite what I've done with it, it was a great picture to begin with
