Just another Sketchbook thread

Most of these images have been changed to thumbnail links to cut down on the horribly slow load times, so just click on the picture for a larger one. Thank you and critiques are very welcome. New work at the bottom.

Been a member here for a while finally decided to start a sketchbook, give the massive amount of crap Im posting at one time, Ive kept most of the images rather small. IF people care to see things larger Ill host them larger.

Just as a disclaimer.. the photographs of the paintings dont look to much at all like the originals. Thats why I usually never post pictures of paintings because they get so badly butchered. AT some point Im going to do it professionally and take pictures of all of them. Most of the paintings are just studies a few were for assignments.

alright thats a fairly good chunk of the paintings ive done, I took out some of the crappier ones.. and I got lazy.. so much to photograph and upload.

This next bit is from observational sketchbooks I drag around with me everywhere I go. filled about 4 sketchbooks maybe a little more, in the past 3 months with these, I buy cheap 5 dollar sketchbooks with 220 pages in them so its not a bad deal, they are 5.5 x 8.. so ive done Im guessing somewhere close to 600 observational drawings? Whatever youll just have to take my word on that cuz theres no way in hell im uploading even half of that. Here are a couple that I sorta randomly selected and scanned before I got annoyed with how slow the scanner is.

Youre inks are really fun to look at and I like the illustration stuff a lot! Very cool stuff, bro. My suggestions are to continue working from life and get yourself some anatomy books and study, study, study. Keep it up! We'll be watching!

Adrian Brody? Nice work, man. That portrait of the officer guy isn't very flattering tho!! Ha! I commend on your continued tablet efforts tho. I get really impatient with my tablet skills and don't really stick it out. We'll see. Keep up the great work. I'll be looking forward to more updates.

thank you zebz for your comments, they seem to be rather hard to come by in the sketchbook section.

heres some more sheiit.

From life looking in the mirror.. first timeive attempted this.. and also the first time ive attempted an alla prima portarit in oils.. altho I came back to it one time afterwards because I got too tired to finish in one sitting.

I know this is old man shit.. but I learned a helluvalot painting these about light and from.. and about oils. Im curious what people think of my results.

I dont have enough lights to cancel out out the glare on the oils so.. these are the best pictures I could get.

heres my first still life ive ever actually painted.. in oils.. which im begging to get a better handle on oils now I think.

Did this one right after the first one.. had paints going to waste on the pallete and another small canvas I didnt know what to do with so ...apples!

Heres some pencil work.. I always hate having to do portaits of peoples kids, because they always give me fucking flash photography to work from so its a pain in the ass.. not to mention tiny ass pictures. This took me a couple more hours than I would have liked but I needed the practice
I think Im getting paid 45$ for each head.. so 180$ total. this drawing is on 18x24 paper. I havent shown it to him yet so I dont know how much Im getting paid, he seemed like a nice guy.

heres what I had to work from.. This is about the actual size of the picture they gave me.. slightly larger. I can pick out errors but I lost patience with it.

you give alot to exageration, but i think you have talent. really, the paintings are a great advancement, and you show the persistance of a comitted. Indeed, thank you for sharing these with us this far already. I look forward to what your studies can show us in the near future.

Hey man, nice lil drop of updates... on the mountains I would say to avoid mixing black in to get your shadows, it tends to muddy things up.... some saturated blues would help give it that atmospheric feeling, as well as make the colors more vibrant. Maybe make the colors in the shadows more saturated than the higher range of values? Also, playing with the edges of the parts that are supposed to recede would help too, make the mountain feel more massive... anyway, keep em comin! cool stuff.

tried to incorporate what you said cody..not to sure how well tho. I struggle with land scapes and mountains the most.. so thats why Im studying them. eh I struggle with everything.

Nice update man! I like you little setup.
About the kids pic, I think you should push the values a bit more, and the girl on the rights eyes seem a bit... off...

I was also wondering if you SB header is a nod to the Helmet + House of Pain song "Just Another Victim" ?
Every time I see your thread the song kicks in but I change the words from

Lot of good studies, Ken. I dig the hand study, the portratit and the tones of your mountain landscape. You got a good variety of stuff. I see you work hard and that's the only secret !

been painting on it when I get tired of doing studies..

here are some landscapes and another little still life.. all of these are oil
first lanscape ive painted in oil..nothing like painting one digitally. was a learning expereince and a failure for the most part. was from a loosley from a photo my mom liked.

2nd landscape..in oils from ref and imagination.

3rd landscape in oils..this time completely from imagination. was done for my sister

and another still life to study light and form.

nice sp man! you seem to be getting a better handle on making your values work with the color, as well as making the forms feel like they're actually there, like there's stuff going on under the skin. cool. you still in any of georgie's classes?

sorta forgot about this thread with all the work been doin this semester.. um yea im taking or just finished takinga sequential class with george.. alot of work. I had to scan in these pages for a sketchbook show the society is doing in newyork. I doubt any of my stuff will get in but some of the professors picked one or two of these pages and sent them in. im lazy.. posting is so much time.. anyways.
