    well, here's my attempt

A number of digs funded by the African government uncovered a massive structure of unknown origins somewhere in the eastern Sahara desert. Archaeologists believe that they've discovered what was once a major trading hub, but unfortunately, the architecture and symbols that were found in the dig are unidentifiable, and the DNA tests have yet to produce satisfactory results.

Oh, Homeworld nice job. I really like the structure. The only thing with your back story is I expected to see a few more people...doing tests and such. Very kool!

There are nine million tentacles on this thing

This is my first attempt at anything like this so don't laugh too much.

Dave brought his Tree Squid to the Interplanetary Animal Market but it didn’t get much attention.

I don't laugh, but I can't see much of the environmental design. Would you add a description and a plan for this?

strangely enough some how both those entries seem to have no or minimal animals badger, come on you can manage it, characters and creatures are an integral part of most environments and ive you break it down this one isnt even that complex, no where does it state animals or humans need to be included and i am quiet convinced you could push yourself a little to come up with. If you want a place where you can play entirely int he safety of your own comfort zone why dont you jes doodle in your sketchbook, instead of taking part in challenges and competitions, both of which indicate a measure of excelling in an area and be better then the others. Think about any environment in movies or video games, how many do you see that are entirely without characters or creatures? theres a reason they are there, unless the architecture or some natural formation is collossaly impressive, they become very boring very quick. Here are some diffrent takes on environment,s not all of them have to be at ground level illustrations here take a look at these:

    http://www.vancekovacs.com/jpgs_big/c_27.jpg
    http://www.vancekovacs.com/jpgs_big/c_13.jpg

come on now, you can even leave out every single character and animal and claim its out of season for animal trading or something, or that it was once one like on of the people above did. Its no diffrent from any other environment youve done once you break it down.

Hey Rook i was only half serious, but on your point a lot of people are holding down fulltime jobs and school. Possibly it's to do with the wealth of people imaginable with such a complex social space as a market.
I like the challenge, i wasn't saying it was bad, just that it would put off entries for being exactly that, challenging.

Here's my lines which now i'm ashamed to say are at ground level... DOH, it was my favourite thumbnail..

I've also remembered why i never ink stuff, looks hideous :'(

I'll attempt a render if i get time.
    Good luck all!

hah, i know man wasnt jes directed at you, and i promise the next one will be plenty easier jes to mix it up some, i might do two (only submit one) to show how like it can really be done diffrently i guess and how the interpretation of the title can really vary amazingly, depending on what kind of context you spin it in. For instance, it could be an inca temple where aliens trade with humans for various things, and it turns out sheepa re acctually from a diffrent planet and where part of a barter aliens did with locals, which means that it could for instance be a really primitive bit of architecture or non at all, or it could totally be like a star wars mos eisly situation, with the backstory you can make it whatever you like, thats all i mean, theres still room for so much. Try and render it, i think itl be really cool try and give the surface more form and shape with cutlines, and vary your lineweight to show what object s are close to cmaera and whcih are far away.

    Interplanetary Animal Market

A bustling hub for traders of all kinds, the space port of Massus IV is particularly notable for it's animal market. Breeds, species and beings of all kinds are on constantly rotating display, for the punters to view and buy.

Cool topic - it is a tough one I guess - the creature design is really crappy in my entry thanks to the amount of time spent on the rest of it. I could have whittled away on it forever, but I always work stuff to death, so I'm stopping myself for once. Anyway, I hope that it passes muster.
    Cheers,
    Jonathan

Hm - just for fair vote: what do you think about davi's suggestion to end the round on the first weekend with at least 10 entries.?

I would do something, but unfortunatly I don't have my tablet with me

And - we have 4 activities... the at-least-10-entries regulation would help to get some more competition...

    huh?

btw - nice depiction style you used! Very clear and traceable

Here's my first entry. Glad to join the fine ranks of the EOW.
hmm. Sorry that this is slim on characters and absent of creatures. I was actually into the thought of what could be done without them. And I did it from a ground perspective because I feel that's what I'm worst at.

This starship is part of a small armada of interplanetary animal vendors. They mostly target newly terraformed planets and provide some products to the less respectable rare animal zoos. They carry few real animals aboard, but instead carry the largest commercial supply of raw biological material in the galaxy. One can view an online catalogue, or visit their database room (shown) containing the wriitten description and genetic information of almost every animal in existence. Also on display in this room is a large container of the bio-material.

This was fun, guys. I hope I do it again.

would you like to elaborate on that, im not wuiet sure i get waht ya mean. Personally im thinking this was way too complex for most people to be bothered with, and wasnt as open as they liked, ill make sure to pick a better more open subject next round that can be interpreted in a variety of ways. The rest of you guys, nice entries, well done

right here i did another little speedpaint,a dn finished the one above up.

too bad it sucks, but you get the idea, they can be very diffrent, in style content view etc, your only really limited by how far you can extend your imagination and work around problems.

heres my other proper entry, as i think might be useful, as a piece of conceptart for a top down rts or rpg design.

I think that what Zeitwolf is saying is that there are very few entries this time around. The Industrial Design of the Week activity had the same problem, so davi stated that for the voting to start, he was going to extend the deadline indefinatly until there were at least 10 entries that could be taken to the poll. Or something like that.

I actually think its a good topic. Its true that it does sound more restrictive, but you can take this topic in so many directions. Look at Homeworld's, a really original take on the subject I think.
The problem for me personally is that I was doing my cow/chow ("cow chow" : P ) entries this week, but I did do some rough thumnails and a sketch for this eow. Though, I didnt manage it in time and lost interested in taking it further.

The waiting for 10 entries is a good idea if you want more entries for the poll, if you're willing to wait a few more days that is. Now that chow05 round has ended, maybe some folks could manage the time to finish their eow06 entries. Its up to you.
