Possible reference Materials include: Hornblower novels (Forrester: 'Captain and Commander' or all the novels of Patrick O Brian.
The ships should be researched and any one who makes the flag on the mast fly the wrong way will be summarily eliminated from polling.
Fantasy elements are acceptable as long as the time period is clear. Your entry can be combined with your CHOW entry, in that if you can include the character as part of the scene that will be fine. All Chow and Eow rules still apply.
You have three options with this contest:
a) Do a more illustrative piece and combine CHOW & EOW and meet the requirements for both contests in one image (a battle on a quarter deck, for example)
b) Do two illustrations seperately, one with a naval battle, and one just with the hero, CHOW link here.

c) Only do one of the two - you don't really need to do both, but it'll be more fun!
