    Surfer Girl

New idea. I was influenced by those "no rules" binder covers. I got reference from Blue Crush, but changed the pose just a little bit. Anyhow, I'm thinkin of changing her expression, and putting some crossed out shark stamps on the bottom of the board....I might put some seaguls in and give her a fishing weapon of some kind...not sure yet though.

why does every artwork involving a chick in bikini/thongs have to show her with the legs spread apart so we can see "everything". its a kind of a cheap way to attempt to keep attention focused in one pointless spot.

Hmmm... I think he's on the right direction but the crotch area isn't... I know what you wanted to achieve but it looks like she's facing the other way (from her thighs down). I think her hips have something to do with this or it might have to do with the shadows... that area is too flat. I like how it's comming along though.

yeah definitely in the early develpement stages, ill get to work on making it look a bit less flat, and no this is not some perverted attempt by any means. im sorry you felt that way. its actually a real surfing pose.

heavens no lol i was just saying that its becoming a stereotype, i dont know anything about surfing, so if you say its a real pose i believe you, just that sometimes it makes it more interesting to try and hide them, makes the hole thing more entycing (dunno if thats the word).
oh a cool thing for this is to give her a defiant look on her face, like sort of "cant touch this, sharko!" anyway i wanna see this done its got potential

This is just me, and I'm kinda weird, but those board shorts? Yeah. WAY cooler than a string.

No really, I hardly ever see a surfer girl in a string. The board shorts are way more popular, for a lot of reasons I'd guess. Also, it *can* add some interest, as those hibiscus silhouettes are just mad awesome on shorts. hehe.

    Toldja I was weird.

I worked on her a lil' bit more. I decided I couldnt make the "crotcth" area look like anything except her rump so I put some board shorts on her. I also liked the comp better flipped the other way.

yes i definitely agree, board shorts are totally better lookin...the original pose and idea before this one had her in a bikini i wanted to keep it, but hell it wasnt working one bit.

Well, right now you've got something weird going on with her eyes. They're crossed, and not emotional enough. Next, take a look at HER left arm. IMO, sorta manly. Finally, the shark coming out of the water doesn't sit right with me. When you consider the amount of his body out of the water, he'd have to be accelerating upwards, and thus spraying water all over, and even affecting the crest of the wave.

    Good progress so far.

    I agree with the shorts decision...way cool. = )

the arm that is extended downwards looks a little short to me, like she doesn't have much of a bicep/tricep.

It's comin' along though, keep messin' with it.

i like both of the last two that you posted, but it seemed to me that on the idea for the 2nd pose it might be interesting if she had more attention diverted to the shark. granted, she's spotting her course on the wave and hopefully out of this sticky situation, so maybe just her eyes are looking at the shark out of the corner, like she know's it's there but she's determined to get out of there. if she's determined to kill that damn shark, then maybe she should have the weapona t ready, like raised or something? i dunno, but either way you've made great improvements since the first post, awesome!

The eyesocket is too pronounced, and the dorsal fin is too far forward, unless this is a dwarf Great White...

Yeah, nothing worse than "watery" looking water... (Being an AD doens't mean you have to spell or communicate too clearly...)
Of course, good rendering skills can and often DO, prove far superior to a photo...They're best used for reference to help with anatomy accuracy, which is just as important in animals as it is in humans...

well thanks guys, ill fidge more with her head or eyes to make it like she checkin the shark, and i cuold play with the hand that has the harpoon more. i agree with the water not spraying right, but im having trouble understanding what you meant by looking "too water like?" ....not sure what you mean, but im gonna fix the sprays and get them to look more acurate. and thanks for the shark picks, i definitely have to fix his eye, and the jaw a lil bit too. though, im still unsure of what pose i should keep...

arrrg picking poses....tell me about it! I'm going through the same thing. = )

I personally think I like the second one better. It has more forward motion, more purpose. More dynamic...dynamics. = P

It also makes her look more like she can command the board, I know the first is an actual pose, but it could be mistaken for her trying to get her balance back. Like she's gonna fall off. That, of course, is fine, if that's what you want. = )

    good luck, keep at it.

    too water like?
He's just bein' pissy with Madster... nothing to do with your pic at all I think.

The spear pose defintly has some promise, but I would definitly photograph a friend holding a stick or something... personally I find it almost impossible to fake a pose like that... how the hand goes and what direction the spear is really gonna point if it's held that way. My apologies if you HAVE already referenced the pose... in that case just make it more obvious whether the spear is angled towards the viewer or away.

Nice intensity in her face there.

CCThrom, I did use reference for the spear hand for sure, but I can tell what you mean, it doesn't have any depth at the moment. Too bad I cant get a hold of a real harpoon I'll work on that some more...probably wont be able to touch this for a few days though due to my hectic schedule.

Ridiculous improvement in the pose. Much more determined (and now you have your excuse to draw a thong! ) I'm thinking that although she might hold the harpoon reverse like she is now, she wouldn't have it twisted up that far behind her head. I think I can guess why you did it, tho: in a normal stick-holding pose, pointy end goes off the page. Am I right?

I'm just wondering why the harpoon at all dude ? hehe It just kinda came out of left field I liked the idea of the shark bearing down on the unsuspecting surfer chick, it just doesn't make sense now...or maybe i've not packed enough bowls....

It would work I suspose if SHE were chasing the shark like she's gonna kill the mofo, but as is it's like she was just surfing with a harpoon trying to be cool or something, maybe just super paranoid, or she watched gladiator the night before maybe ;p

Anyways overall it's definately improving man, keep at it

you know, i think she packed bowls, watched gladiator, and then decided to go surfing while feeling extremely paranoid. not the best idea but she most certainly has protection!

See, I saw it like she was a warrior who was expecting to come across the shark, and wanted to get revenge because Fred (the shark) ate her reuben sandwich; Timmy. And, like, instead of a boat, she knew she could menuver better on her board; Stan. (And the harpoon is James Dean Jr. III). ; P

I did a little bit more work. I think all I have to do is tighten up the rendering and then I'm done, but let me know what you think.

good progress. her hair could use some finer rendering, i know itd be wet, but it still needs to look more than plasticine, you know? oh, and the way her fingers are bent on her free hand looks a little awkard and uncomfortable.. mabe think of bending them a bit, cause 90 degree angle bends fom the knuckles is a bit.. yeah. that and her bikini looks a little impractical - the top part, that is - dont need her falling out when shes killing teh shark! ok so.. keep it up!

ahem...pointless as in having no real connection to the idea of the drawng, sheesh...anyways, to stay on topic, i like how its coming along now, the new "i got a harpoon and gonna impale ye with it" look is rather cool, and id have to agree, the eye of the shark is too prominent, other than that its really cool

It doesn't look like she's got a very good grip on that harpoon...however, with that reversed grip it would be awkward to throw anyway.

Compositionally, this seems a bit disconnected - the foreground is not interacting with the background. Maybe turn her head to look at the shark like she's lining it up to hurl that harpoon? The harpoon and board-art suggest that she hunts sharks, yet here is one of the baddest she's ever faced (I'm assuming) and she doesn't even glance at it. So jaded.
