A year later...just scroll down for the new stuff

Ignore the old stuff and just scroll down

    Hi everyone,

So, being inspired by the Prague workshop (for people wondering, I was with the dutch bunch), I decided to change my nickname from DaRobertz into Robot (my old nickname sucked, if any of the admins reads this, you can delete the DaRobertz Profile). Anyway, I thought it was a nice way to start my new life as Robot with my first sketchbook on CA (WOOT!). So let's begin:

(On a side note, people that where inspecting Robots when they entered this thread, to bad, none of those in here. But there will be, just you wait)

Oke, this is a doodle I made in Prague. It kinda sucks, but it's the last pencil drawing i made since Prague. After that, it's all pen.

At the portefolio review in Prague, one of the most important crits Coro and Marko made was to start drawing with pen, cause it helps you put down lines in one go, thus sparing you time and giving you a cleaner drawing. So i decided to start drawing with pen until I get my lines right. Since Joeri got props for his hands drawings, I decided to start doing some of does to get a grip on this medium. So hands it is! (As you may notice, I used to much lines on these)

In Prague they had this great statue on the square. We stopped there to draw it. It was a nice experience. Tourist gave us a lot of attention. Me like attention . This is from the statue. Used to much lines on this one (again), it's way to busy.

Another one form the statue. This one turned out nice I think.

Back to the hands again. Still using to much lines.

Hands, you got to love them!

At this point, the guys form my sketchgroup adviced me to try to draw them in on go. After a few failures, this one turned out nice.

I was kinda wasted when i made this one. Started out as the previous one, but i made some abstract piece of it. I don't know what I was thinking .

Oke, time for something new. My faces kinda sucked so i started doing those. Here ar some live drawing i made from my folks and some stuff from Mucha i tried to copy.

Figured that if i wanted to learn how to draw faces without reference, I needed to start learning the basics of a head. Starting with skulls (everybody loves skulls). Done from reference.

    More head practice.

And some more head practice. Feeling like I'm getting the hang of it .

Well, that was it for know. I hope you enjoyed, although I'm not as good as the greater part of this forums, I'm trying.

Gonna try to update this daily. Now I'll be waiting for your helping crits and stuff.

Keep up the good work ,

    Robot

    First update, WOOT!

Thnx for all the kind words guys. And Thrillzilla, you better be starting a Sketchbook soon, otherwise, you're voluntering for a serieus slapping!

Didn't really have much spare time this weekend, my part-time job (for people wondering, I'm a bartender) and school where keeping me busy. Still managed to spend some time on drawing so here are some doodles.

I also made a post in the "What does everybody look like? - Prague Workshop edition" thread, so if you are wondering what I look like, look here:

Well, that was it for now, have some free time tommorow, so expect an update!

Well, big update this time, didn't have time to scan my stuff and have been sick this week. Anyway, enough excuses, here's some art

These faces are from the Star Wars: Episode 3 art book. Liked them a lot so drew them. I think they came out nicely

Tried some stuff myself after that.

    Some hands

Had problem drawing nice poses, so decided to redo some Loomis stuff.

And some stuff i made during a sketchbook sesion with Floris Didden, DavidSmit and Joeri.

A piece I made during the art-class I take on thursday evening. I don't have an art course at school, but still wanted to learn the traditionel stuff. This is a still-life on A3 paper using charcoal and Pastel-crayon. Will try to upload a better photo, this one was made using my phone, so sorry for the crappy qualitie.

And last but not least, my own hairdesign. Being inspired by Marko and his own hair designing stuff, i decided to give it a go. Made this drawing, took it with me to the barber shop and they used it to make my hairdo. Gonna upload a photo of the outcome tommorow, but for now, here's the drawing.

Well, that was it, hope i get some reactions. Untill next time,

your style is very busy, and it would be, if you havent heard this already, to calm down with the line work. you obviously growing and skill, and already have a good eye for rather intruiging light sources, but some of your peices are very messy, to the point where its very difficult to discern what they actually are. Keep it up, and never fear putting a pen to paper.

Well, about time I update my sketchbook again, almost forgot I had one. So, since it's been a long time, i'll make it a gigantic update. Enjoy!

Stuff I did for a school project. The Project was to make a game for women and it had to play in a hospital. We made a kinda Resident-Evil type of game.

These where done the night before the presentation. It was 4 A.M. and we needed some mutated people to show. With my sleepy mind, I drew these, full of anatomicall mistakes etc. but i'm posting them anyway.

    A few doodles

Notice the small houses on poles. These where for another project for school, but I couldn't find the time to finish it. Oh yeah, there is some loomis stuff in the ones above.

Well, since my old sketchbook got full, I bought a new, square one. Kinda small, but it's easy to carry around. Here's some stuff form it.

Skull study from Anatomy for the Artist

My heads could use some work, so I started doing "Drawing Heads and Hands". Here's some stuff I did.

Where doing a new project at school again. This time, my group is making a game about a little kid that get's trapped in his dreamworld, fighting his alter-ego. These are some sketches for it.

Doodles I made during class. Daniel (Thrillzilla) got the idea to draw Nazi bots. Floris started doing them and his looked so cool, I decided to draw one (no, where not racists, it's just a drawing. We're normal peace loving people, at least I am ) Note the Samu-vampires on the side.

Made these last night, was tired of doing Loomis, so doodled a bit. Wanted to draw an orc, cause Floris draws them a lot, so a decided to have a go.

Well, that was about it, I'm looking forward to some nice C & C.

Yooo dude, big ass update. Keep drawing away, I can see the improvement.
Like the pen skull drawing, hands are nice too, try to get that looser feel into the pencil work as well. We should have handdrawing orgy with Mr. Handfetish Joeri some time.
    Cya tomorrow, m8,

    Cheers,

EDIT: I can't see the nazi bot picture

Ive 'studied' those Iain McCaig pictures from the ep II/III star wars books as well, he has such a great style. The best advice I can give is draw from life a lot - i.e life drawing. Try and draw as many figures as you can, i think it should come before drawing from imagination. The loomis studies are looking great, you might prefer hogarth and bridgman - I find their work easier to approach. great work tho, Keep posting XD.

Well, since I want to give this baby (my sketchbook) some more attention, here's a new update, but first.....

Floris: thnx for tips, bro, will work on it.

Alcian: thnx for the comment. Your reply got me thinking though. Studying from life is good and something an artist must always continue doing, but the best way to let the study's really learn you something is to put them into practice by doing stuff from your imagination.

Joeri: Good point, my man, I really work small don't I. Time to use your advice. thnx for posting by the way..

Anyway, time for the update. Stopped doing study's for some personal stuff, just to see if the study's help.

    some small doodles

After finishing this page, I was quite proud of myself. I can really see the study's working here

A few study's from loomis (sorry, can't help it ) and some crap next to it

Few study's just to get the pen going

    Some doodles

And some fucked-up-doodle-orgasme-thingie. Hope you like.

Well, that was it, hope you like the stuff. It's back to the drawing board for me.

    Hey Robert!

I can see the studies paying off. Some drawings have nice loose lines, but as soon as you draw a full body character you become stiff and try to nail every line the first time. Don't be afraid to make mistakes. Try setting up the pose with a free flowing gesture drawing, then draw the character on top of it when the figure is posed right. There's no shame in constructing a figure if that makes it work! Lifedrawing will help you a lot.

I like the sideview skull the most. It's pretty accurate and the lines are not stiff. Some lines you nailed the first try, others took a couple more, but the whole works, that gives the drawing life.

Keep up the studies and you will improve! See you at school duude.

Damn, it's has been a long time since I updated my skecthbook, it feels kinda weird to look at my old stuff again . Anyway...

I'm working as an intern at a small game company called eximion. They make 3d webgames and I'm doing Concept Art and Texture Art as an Intern. The next batch is some Concept Art I made there during the last few months. I'm gonna split it in 2 seperate parts, since i'm working on 2 different projects there.

First of the bat, some quick environment sketches I did for a few games based in a funky-cartoon-underwater world called Nauticz. The environment in these games are basically floating props in which the games take place, I hope you like them.
