    Concepts for commercials

    Long time no see,

here are a few concept images done for various projects.
With the monasteries, I had the pleasure of working with well renowned director Jonathan Glazer on "Stella - ice skating priests" commercial. Warehouse image was done for "Carphopne Warehouse, happier lives".
3D layout done by Lars Magnus Holmgren.

I recently saw the Jonathan Glazer video on his Director's Label DVD. That commerical was great and your matte looked fantastic! Excellent work!

wow...the monastary images are just plain BEAUTIFUL! The second one has an atmosphere to it that is breathtaking!

The last one is 3D? Great details in it without being overdone.

    VERY IMPRESSIVE!

Love the last two. The second one captured the cold winter mood so well.

Very good work man. Is the last one entirely 3D in combination with a photograph ? I'd really be interested in how you did this.

    cheers!

Long time fan of your work. I love these pieces. You've had them on your site for quite some time. Except the factory.
I like the light placement and steam vents of the factory piece. Really adds to it. Show us more!

Tjaba! Big fan of your work. The church mattes, are they 100% painted or 3d/photo elements?

    Glad you like it,

for the monastery concepts I modeled simple 3d geometry and painted on. The sky, trees and snow is painted. The factory interior is a modified photo with 3D. Check this image:

That's awesome! Do you usually collaborate on the 3D modeling for your pieces?

Thank you so much for letting us take a glimpse into how you create your images.

Oh, and how'd you find the "factory" photo?

    Top notch work!

Wonderful work. Very clean and great atmospheres.
When you paint on top of your 3d work, do you use lots of masks and individual layers for all the elements, or do you paint everything on one layer? And do you use parts of the render and photo or do you paint everything from scratch? Thanks.

The Monastery pictures are excellant! Very atmosphereic.

Please could you post them without the black area for the matte work?

Patrick> I do collaborate quite alot when doing this kind of work, depending what the job is of course, how the shot looks, camera moves etc. Factory photo was shot when the crew went out to find a location. It's simply just a digital still, not film or anything. The commercial was later shot on 35mm I believe.

Andreasrocha> I do use a few layers when painting on top of simple geometry. How many is usually based on the complexity and a few other things too complicated to explain in short. Soft gradients for instance, would be painted in using adjustments layers rather than with a paintbrush, as it gives you more flexibility. The monasteries, as far as I remember, weere mostly painted on 1 or 2 layers. I tend to merge layers as I progress to speed things up. Can't organize tons of layers.
The photographic reference and 3D renders you're talking about will naturally exist beneath my paint. I don't paint everything if I don't have to, especially not under tight deadlines. ("Can you have this done by lunch?") When using 3D, what I look for most is how to retain edges.

Ogrebar> Why do you need them without the black? Feel free to remove the black yourself ...
