    Learning the basics 2.0

Back at it after a few year's hiatus into game dev and film production work. I needed a new, more useful hobby.

Most of these are 30 sec gestures, 2 minute gestures and 5 minute contours with box studies

Last few posts were all from a figure drawing session I attended.

Now studying muscle systems. I'm surprised I can still name all the muscles from my anatomy science class. Drawing human faces is still my worst skill. I still can't get over drawing what "should" be there, rather than what's actually there.

Friend late night at a coffee shop.

Great studies, these'll really help you.
Are you doing them from photos or memory? Because if you're not doing so already I'd suggest a mixture of the two. From photos to ensure accuracy, then some from memory/imagination to make you're you're taking in all the info.

    Keep at it (:

So far I've only been doing from observation. An old highschool art teacher drilled it into me that I shouldn't draw from photos.

Muscle drawings are from memory and an old medical book I had lying around.

A short sketch I did with Zbrush and photoshop. Andrew Loomis' technique.

and a second one for fun after getting critique...

Sketch during a meeting today, played with it's composition a bit. I'm not liking it so far. It needs something going inward...to break up the spiral which doesn't really show any depth.

and I dunno how to position the wings to make them not awkwardly blocking parts of eachother. I'll think about it after today's figure drawing class.

Our figuredrawing teacher isn't very good at explaining planar studies... Me and another 3d artist in the class just sorta drew on our knowledge of topography, but apparently she wanted to to be more abstract and less like...this. I dunno.
