It's been a long long long long time... I've been busy. And I've not done much 'for me'. But i thought i'd start updating again. Occassionally.![]()
Here's some stuff i've done recently for my King of Space character. Soon to have his own website and comic. Hopefully... He's been around for bloody ages, but i'm going to make an effort and get the site up and running over Christmas (fingers crossed).
Some character work, i'm going to be doing a whole lot more of these until i'm dead comfy drawing him:
A strip i worked up earlier this year, but with a couple of adjustments i did last week:
And a sketch for a poster, based on an old painting of Napoleon:

Here's a bunch more stuff.
I've just read the Sticky about the 'attachment manager' so i'm gonna try that.
The 'Shooter' was just a morning doodle which appeared when i should have been doing something else. The Tractor was based on a photograph of tractor i took in a pub car park. And the Chimpski sketch was for the soviet chimp story i was working on, but which has taken a bit of back seat to everything else recently.
WOAH!!! I haven't seen your name pop up in FOREVER!!!! Where were you?
New stuff looks sweet!
Great stuff, as per usual.
even if it is posted once a year
cheers.
Cheers Justin! I've been concentrating on my paid work and trying to get a good start freelancing, so personal work and getting involved in forums has been pretty low priority. I'm hoping to find more time to join in with conceptart and a couple of other forums... I've missed 'em...Originally Posted by Justin Oaksford
Redhelert motivated me to kick start my sketchbook. We're both participating in a 'Monster' workshop with Don Seegmiller. It sounded like fun (and it is so far!) and i had some empty space in my schedule so i signed up. We started last week and we've been looking at creature's eyes and sketching ideas for monsters with prominenet eyes. Here's some stuff i did in my spare time last week, the first three are quick 20min paitings based on reference and the rest are sketches for 'Eye' monsters:
Haha! I'll be more regular from now on...Promise...Originally Posted by Nutter
This is great stuff, really original designs. Ive seen the king before in ImagineFX, what you said was a good read. Thanks for sharing.
That's awesome you're taking that course with Don Seegmiller. I wished I had taken advantage of that. Maybe next time. It's good to see you posting again. Good stuff!
It's so great to have you back, Johnny. We've missed ya! I've been keeping track of your work in ImagineFX tho so you haven't been forgotten. Lovin' the new sketches and can't wait to Ooogle over these when I have more time away from work. Just wanted to say welcome back!!
Those eyes are fantastic! love all of the stuff in here, post more![]()
Hey Johnny. Love your work manHope to meet ya one day, with the UK crowd.
Good to see some freshness. I dig your characters.

You sketchbook is one of my all time favorites. So glad your posting. And I'm super jealous. I really wanted to take that monster workshop.

Cheers for all the replies folks! Sorry i've taken so long to respond to some of 'em, but i was gettingh busy in the UK vs Scandinavia thnderdome and had some 'proper work' that's been keeping me up into the wee hours... Just to answer a few things:
Ostrander, crazy3Dman: I couldn't resist the Don Seegmiller course. My diary looked a bit quieter so i thought i'd have the time and that i'd probably get a copuple fo portfolio pieces out of it. I've been a bit busy to really get stuck in so far, but still had some fun. There's still people who've signed up (and paid!!) and haven't even typed a post. I don't get it?? What a waste...
Kian: It'd be great to meet up with the UK crowd. It's a bit more difficult when you live up in the hills in a wet town forgotten by civilisation, like me and poshspice (and young paddy1), and having a baby and all that stuff makes it even more tricky. i do come to London now and agaion for meetings, so i'll try and keep an eye out for a meet that can coincide maybe..? Although i did like Koshime's Snowdonia suggestions a few months back...![]()
nicolas: Cheers! I'll get onto that poster over Xmas.... promise... And hopefully back it up with some strips and a makeshift website.
Sundance: Haha... I have been a bit slck haven't i? But i've gotta keep my baby's belly full!
Art Addict: It's difficult to avoid some Calvin similarities whilst still going for big head, little body and cute little boy look. And Calvin and Hobbes is one of the few strips that i really enjoy. Although Robot Man was always fun to read. (There was a fanatstic strip about Spock thinking aboput the logic of Santa that is one of my all time favourites). And i'm gonna be more regular from now on.........
And thanks for the mentions of ImagineFX stuff. The IFX team are a great bunch of people and it's fun putting workshops together. I'll post some upcoming sketches when i've got them all to web friendly sizes!
Meanwhile, here's some tasty gnashers i did last week for the Seegmiller workshop... Don't get too turned on by them...![]()
And a quick tonal pass over the 'Eye Monster'.
And here's some stuff for the UK vs Scandinavia thunderdome. The layout sketch and a WiP. The finished images should be in the Challenge Arena later..?
It's titled 'The Saga of Erik the Hungry' and the vacant space around the border is for narrative tapestry stuff........
Great update Johnny. I just love that monster's expression
And I'm up north myself man. In Huddersfield. But I totally understand man. You guys work your asses off. Maybe sometime in the ol' future we can have a northern meet.
Huddersfield!? That's probably almost as wet and windswept as Buxton! i used to get spare parts for an old 60s Saab i've got from Huddersfield.Originally Posted by Kian
A northern meet would be great. Maybe Manchester would be cool..? Something we could discuss for the New year perhaps..? Mad fer it!!
