i havent drawn in years.. so i'm taking this drawing class at school and it has motivated me to draw more. so here's what i've been up to lately:

(i couldnt get a very good shot of this one, and its too big to scan. the color and contrast is a little off here)

Hiya JillianLeigh, some nice work you've got here, very good use of colour. My Sketchbook has no colour what-so-ever lol. I have a few crits, the bottom of the bottle doesn't seem right. It has the wrong (someone correct me if i've used the wrong word here) dimensions. And the proportions of Jesus' face aren't quite right. Just hit the anatomy books when your not at class to just practice and post us some more work. Hope this helps (i don't really crit often so you'll probably get better responses from everyone else!)

i realize the proportions of my Jesus drawing are a little off.. but the drawing was more about intensity and power then anything. my style isnt really about being perfect as far as anatomy goes.
i'll keep practicing though and posting more.

I think you are trying to draw with oils pastels, which doesn't take make full use of the advantages that come with the medium. Try using them to paint tone and colour, like charcoal. If you build up the tones with them and fill areas, they look solid and you can take full advantage of their blendability (I don't think thats even a word ) like on the lolly and the bird.
On your bottle, bare in mind the elipse is the same angle all the way down.
Just my 2 pence.

jillian we should get together and do charcoal drawing for our art classes cause im in a drawing class too. we should deffinately do that. that would be awesome and ill bring pens plus a kneaded ereaser because they are fun to play with.

jillian good first post i like you use of coloring...

-the first picture of the birds is nice cause it shows distance and seperation between the foreground and backround! but it looks very unfinished try to fill in all that negative space there!

-the same goes for the fish... don't be afriad to fill in those empty spaces try using the white oil pastel to blend those lighter contour and a more nuetral dark colour for the darker contours... nut try to stay away from using black or use very very very little! ... although i like your style

-the bottle drawing is nice! i like the range of value try this though; try to layout the drawing as a whole bring the values out one at a time rather than concentrating on one single part at a time ...i wanna see it finished ...but it looks a bit flat to me casue theres not enough roundness of the bottle cause of were it sits on the plane of perspective... maybe shift the angle of the compisition so your looking up at it or down at it.

1 it makes for a more interesting compisition
2 it's easier to ephisize the roundness of the bottle for that angle
3 it won't look flat
4 it definitly tells the viewer the angle of perspective (cause it looks as if there are two angles of perspective going from the top of the bottle to the bottom)

-mmmm i like suckers! yum.. ne ways this one is my favorite outta all these cause theres a really good use of color in the highlights and those lil specs of white are awsome! the only thing i could suggest is maybe diffuse the color intensity of the backround to make the sucker pop out as the first thing my eye goes to!

-i think the Jesus picture is nice but i agree with "Lover" with the "dimensions" of the face... they are a bit off... nice flesh tones by the way!

I love that lolly pop! It shows real painter like ability. That's the direction you want to go with these others as well. Your use of color is rich and fun.

The above advice on laying down more color is good, but I would also add that your current style would benefit from using colored paper as a base. Not neccessarily dark, but like a light blue for the bird and the fish would have made those paintings much stronger even painted just the way they are. An abstract watercolor wash would be even more of a cool thing to do these paintings on top of. (now I'm giving myself ideas)

I hear ya on that, but the more capable you become with realism the more powerfull a message you can send. You're like a poet, you have to have a vocabulary in order to say what you feel. In art technical perfection IS our vocabulary.

whatever direction you go, realist or whtever, just remember to make your pictures sing, like the lollipop. if you're going to bring in color, don't just bring it in to 'color' birds or leaves, or to simulate the color of water--use it for effect. use it to make a point. good luck.

hey good to see an update here!
--first of all your faces are much improved since your last post the preportions are much much better... skull studies really help with that keeeeeep dooooing that!

the image of the girl and the fence needs help the anatomy is still a bit off... is it anime i cant tell? oh the big eyes of course! heh and i can see that you were in a hurry to finish it... the rendering gets a bit rough too.... oh well much better great improvement!!!
