    Anyone in Hawaii??

I just relocated to Lanai City Hawaii, and was just wondering if anyone else on here lives in Hawaii.

Lanai City? Dang dude, I was raised on Oahu and I still had to google that shit.... didn't even know it existed.... you're in the sticks! I'm on Oahu. What possessed you to move to Lanai????? It must be like living in the most beautiful solitary confinement jail cell ever. Do they even have a bus system there?

Yes, it's definately remote, but my wife and I don't really like "modern" society too much. Basically, imagine moving back to the 1950's, and living on a tropical island. There is no bus system, and we don't even have any stoplights. People leave their cars unlocked, and even leave the keys in them. If you need something, or your family needs help, the commmunity will pitch in and help. It's a great place to get away from the stress of living in the city. We just decided to do it permanently.

We ended up here because my wife got a job teaching in the local school. As for me, since I do most of my work over the internet it doesn't matter where I live. By the way, if any CA people want to vacation, you're welcome to stay with us. As long as your quiet and don't smell bad.

Hey! Nice to meet you Phade. Where are you on Maui? I still haven't gotten off Lanai yet, but plan on taking the ferry over to Lahaina when I get the chance. I heard there's a really big art crowd that gathers by the banyon tree.

Hi guys, just thought I would chime in.... from what I recall (cause my mom lives on Maui) the banyon tree crowd is a bunch of folks selling crafts & paintings oriented to the tourists. Nothing wrong with that, but it's not my thing.
But FYI Craig Mullins lives on Maui, which is pretty cool. He had a show this past January at the Carolyn Quan Gallery in Lahaina. I didn't go because I didn't know about it in time. I am still kicking myself!

Yeah, I heard that's what the banyon tree was all about. I figured at some point I would try and think of some type of art I could market to the tourists. I would hate to pass up such a large market when it's right at my doorstep.

Upcountry Maui, a mountain and a plain away from Lahaina (bout an 1hr. drive). Pretty much Lahaina town in general is tourist art central; if you enjoy painting dolphins, sunsets on the beach, and humpback whales, then Lahaina is definitely your marketplace - Personally I'm with Yumiko on this one as not really being a favored subject matter

I remember hearing about Craig's show too, after it was over. Also
heard it was not well received unfortunately . . .

Nice to see talented Hawaii folk around these parts. If ya need some Island
info or just want to talk story off the board, feel free to PM/E-mail

jfwalls- i was born and raised on Oahu. My parents are still kickin in Kaneohe. My whole family is there also...part of the reason why i moved, heh. kidding. I moved up to seattle in 2000 for art school and have been here since. At first the whole raining thing got to me...but then i realize when the sun comes up for the summer, it's like a celebration!
I'm currently interning with a small game studio, so most likely I won't be moving back anytime soon. I miss home very much but as far as trying to get my career started...it's better for me not to go back. sniff sniff.
Dude! You should be chillin with Craig Mullins!
BTW, I like that piece you did of the dudes hanging from the ceiling...wicked!

I guess I should go ahead and make my formal farewell to Hawaii here. I leave for Prague on the 19th, then fly directly to San fran..... NEVAR TO RETURN! ....ok maybe I don't hate Hawaii that much.
...no, no, yes I do. Goodbye.

jfwalls- I'm interning with a start up game company called Primate Games. The website doesn't have anything yet, but be sure to check it out hopefully by the end of November for more content and some of my artwork.

Hey, I'm from Oahu too, from the North shore, Waialua and Haleiwa. I miss the crazies the most. Sure you get crazies here, but thier not like the crazies there. I used to live next door to a crack head podda-gee guy who would throw huge rocks at my tin roof at 4 in the a.m. Then he would come over and pound on my door with two baseball bats one aluminum and the other wooden, and the aluminum one was broken in half. While he pounded on the door he would scream and yell that he was looking for his cousin Daniel. I'm glad to be off that God forsaken hell of a rock. Paradise my ass, more like paradise for the doomed.

Yeah, that's why I didn't move to Oahu. It's basically just another big city with all the usual problems, but with palm trees.

Waialua is not a city by any means, niether is Haleiwa. Thier both small towns, one bigger than the other but thats only because you had to drive thru one in order to get to the touristy beaches where they liked to see the "Big Waves". No my side is definatly kon-tree. Malama ka aina (Protect the land). Keep da kontri-kontri, n da townies een town!

suuperpink- lol, i'm glad i never had that problem! It's a shame that these corporate companies are invading oahu (i.e. wallmart, nordstrom), i heard a lot of mom and pop's store are closing down. Stores like Long's are empty here in washington, but back in Hawaii, it's always packed!
Any of you eat spam by the way? lol, i know the haole's don't like it very much up here.
    Peace

Damn Wal-Mart, Damn them to hell in a pink frilly basket!!!!! There was a place that was across the street from my highschool they were called Sagaras, and they made the best hotdog and rice, and musubi's. Are they still there? Hell NO!! Gone!!! Gone like Elvis and Jesus, though I saw them both at 7-11 yesterday bying ciggarettes and Maxim mags. Spam is the best pork-byproduct that the U.S. has ever contributed to the islands. But then again where would we be without the lovely military bases scattered around the island?

I was born and raised in Mililani, Hawaii (Mills-Town)!!! w00t! w00t! MHS c/o '98 in da house braddah! I lived mostly in Waipio Valley (inbetween Mililani and Wahiwa), but went to Mililani for school.

I moved to Seattle in 2003 to go to art school, and just came to L.A. 3 months ago. L.A. is similar to Hawaii. Hawaii is basically a really big Santa Monica.

Mililani? No kidding. I almost moved there, but decided against it. My wife went to Lahaina last week, and was glad to get back. While she was gone I camped out at Hulopoe beach. I swear that's gotta be the best campground I've ever been to. You're allowed to drink and have big fires. That's something you just can't beat!

Mililani's great. Plenty of fond memories. It's small town, but it's still close enough to civilization. I miss it very much.

Hey jfwalls, remember me? Dude trying to start the life drawing class in Cleveland?

Hey, glad to hear things are goin ok there -- I just got back from Hawaii last Monday! I was in a place called "Kalani" over on the "Big Island". Was pretty nice. The resort was pretty much in the boonies, no tv, no cell reception, no phones except for one in the office. But that was part of the wonderful experience I guess. But my God man... it freakin rains soooo much there!!

Went to the caldera of the big volcano, saw some lava flow from the distance and walked among the lava from the '83 flow (that buried that village). Also went to the Black Sand beach. What an experience THAT was! Naked people everywhere, dancing, smokin pot and playing drums -- AWESOME!

Anyway, just thought I'd say hi - CIA finally got their Wednesday life drawing classes running. I've been to most so far, but need to buy more paper and get my ass back in there soon.

    Aloha!

Hey, Tornado. Glad to hear you guys have the drawing classes to go to.

Naked people dancing and smoking pot!! Where the hell is that? I wanna go go to the big island to see the volcano real bad, but it will be awhile before I can make it over there.

My island is actually considered arid, and we don't get much rain. Except for now of course because it's winter. Anyways, good to hear from you. Hope things are well in old Cleveburg. Cya.
