Art teachers fancy what?

Hi!

I'm applying for an art school that want examples with the application. Anyone here who have any experience or idea on what would be a good piece? What do these guys see too much of and what would get their attention?

I'm not so certain that my 'game art' thingies appeal to art teachers, but I desperately need the focused practise of a school no matter what subject i'll be doing in the future

you could ask the school/schools what they look for in a portfolio. Or just submit the kind of work you want to do anyway. do you really want to spend four years of your life doing art-school work that isnt concept related. Id find a school with a good illustration dept. so you can experiment and have freedom to grow----ty

i wouldnt try to cater too much to the teachers for your portfolio--remember the school is there to help you out as an artist who wants to grow--not the other way around.

The politically correct answer that i suspected.

You are probably right. How bout some artsy-crazy ideas anyway just because i'm drawing a complete blank? If not I'll start a study of Ashley Wood kinda-thingy because thats whats been on my mind these last weeks....

hey henry... it depends on what department you're going for...

Painting
textiles
animation? 3d/2d?
sculpture
photograpy
illustration?
graphic design?
"the art program" (fine art..eg..all of the above)

your portfolio should be different for these things.

I'm going for a better understanding of line, composition and color. And practise.

The school I have in mind is kinda 'fine arts for beginners and dreamers'. I figured that it would be a good place to meet people for intresting exchange of ideas and to simply spend more time creating.

Coming home tired from work is not the best way to start practising ones creative skills. It's really getting frustrating to see soo much wonderful illustration (much of it from members here) and feel that you're not moving forward even though you feel that there is potential in you.

I'm whining, but that me...

oh yeah i should have said that i wasn't doing a portfolio. Only a single painting to go with the selfportrait they want with the application.

in high school, we had a series of projects that i think would be perfect for this. take an object you find interesting. draw it as realisticly as you can.. then make a composition inspired by that object. slice it, move it around, draw big lines through it. whatever you find interesting. just have fun with it. the peice should show everything, line, direction, shape, size, texture, value, color. then you'll have it.

just my opinion.
