    // The Douchebaggery //

I decided to make a new sketchthread because I honestly can't stand some of my old stuff, just as I'm sure I'm not gonna be able to stand this new stuff in a year. Thanks to everyone who offered up encouragement in my last thread.

    Some newness

    Well that was a start...
Every piece looks awesome. First faces has innocent skintones. Those are done in photoshop? I would like to see more of those. Also that onehorned tdome devilchic rules.
I am just waiting to get good enough to have a reason to leave old sb and start with clean thread heh.

*dingding* good round #2 for you!

    ender - Thanks man!

Magic Man - Thanks man, I appreciate it. I've been enjoying the stuff in your sketchbook.

maknien - Thanks! The first sketch with the faces was actually done completely in photoshop, but most of the time I go back and forth. There are some brushes in painter I really like, but for detail stuff I usually go to photoshop.

I used to do quite a bit of these here self-portraits, but I probably haven't done one in a year (I'll have to check my old SB to be sure, hehe). I decided to start another one for old times sake. I used a slightly blurred, overlay layer to punch up the colors a bit.

Magic Man - Thanks man. I'm sure I'll finish this one eventually. I just tend to jump around a lot on personal projects.

van - You're too kind man! Too kind.

    Something new I started tonight

You´re just too fucking good. Seriously. But in a kind of inspiring way.
And that self portrait is amazing.

That self portrait is totally hot, man. I agree with strych, you nailed the likeness on that. And the colors are wicked too. Love the warm pallette and the use of the blues and purples.

One small observation, and it might just be the work posted here and not indicative of things on the whole, but your stuff from imagination tends to put the heads either in profile or full frontal. I noticed it immediately with the latest one...that full profile view of the scene really flattens things...I _think_ you're going for two creatures sorta looking at each other here, but I'd almost like to see the creature you've started sort of circling a bit around the hanging creature, with a bit of sideways motion and facing a tad more towards us (and maybe the opposite effect from the hanger)...bring focus to one of the creatures and increase the sense of space. </rambling>

    Cody - Thanks dude.

Flaskpost - Man, that's too much. Thanks a lot!

Fuki - Ah thanks dude. I totally agree with you. The latest one especially looks really flat, which I noticed as I was working on it today. I guess it's just a comfort thing that a lot of the stuff ends up in a full front or side view. Also, a lot of times I just doodle without much of plan or underdrawing so I default to those views unintentionally. Definitely something I need to watch out for. Great crit.

Well I'm just slowly picking away at the last one. Like I said, I dunno where this is going really. I'll probably keep futzing with it until it stops being fun.

    Just a quick ref study

Started this one last night. I want to make a fairly generic grayscale female figure that I can just tack costume ideas on, tweak the face, add color overlays onto. Basically a template I can use for costume/character designs. A lot of parts are still wonky. I used 2 different refs for this and also filled out and tweaked stuff to my liking.

    Thanks cchuckry!

I do love me some Sandman fanart. Those of you who have visited my last SB thread probably know that. Here's a new Morpheus digital. The second image has a cutout/overlay layer. Kinda like the hard graphic edges of that one.

    Janu, shnookems,

You're stuff is looking killer, and you've come a long way.. however, I'd like to suggest a crit. Maybe I just haven't paid enough attention, but you seem to rarely do three-quarters views or any other rotation/angle on your characters (that is, the ones from your imagination). I love how painterly you're work is, and how your skills have improved so dramatically, but (in this thread at least, i should check your other one, BUT IM LAZY!) other than the SP, everything is either a profile, or straight on shot. Try to change that up man, it will give your work more life, more movement, and more tangibility if you play with different angles and perspectives.

Just my input after a late night of Clue.. and valium.
"Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed, The world in arms is not a way of life at all, in any true sense. Under the cloud of threatening war, it is humanity hanging from an iron cross."

    ...I have a sketchbook?

Man oh man! The Sandman piece is sweet! I like the version without the cutout/overlay best. The other one became too harsh in my eyes.

I'm really impressed with the flesh tones in the digital paints. frigging beautiful work. unfortunately i've got no bones to pick or crits to give, other than i want to see more detaching cyborg body parts. NOW!

Morpheus looks great, love the modeling on the chest. While I like the lower hard edge interpretation, it loses all of the rendering in the musculature that works so well in the original. Good shit.

Both sandman versions are frikkin great! I love his long white torso - good stuff man! Into the favorites folder! The red on his nose and lips works best in the cutout version i think. This is really good stuff man!

That fat kid - Thanks man!

Heliummike, babycakes - Fuki actually pointed out the same thing a couple of posts up. I totally agree. Although a rotated view isn't something I think I conciously avoid, I think I do need to make a conscious effort to mix up my camera angles.

    Gloominati - Thanks a lot!

van - Thanks dude. Been enjoying seeing the progress in your recent paintings as well.

Alan - Actually I didn't have any idea who that is. Thanks for mentioning him though, I looked up some of his stuff online and I dig it. I'll probably pick up his book.

    dcept - Thanks dude!

Joel - Haha, thanks. I'll make sure to get some detached cyborg parts in the near future.

Cody - Thanks mang. I like the comment you made on the other forum too, hehe.

Fellah - Thanks man! Always makes me feel good anytime I can make it in someone's favorites folder. I've actually had a bunch of crits from other forums and most folks don't dig the red nose and lips too much. I think I will have to tone it down in a future update.

    vigostar - Thanks!

Jens - Thanks. As of late I've been drawing stuff out of this cheapo book I got that has nothing but b&w photos of life drawing models. Really handy. Mostly I get my refs from the usual places, books and the internet.

I started on my tdome yesterday. Wasn't too happy with my first pass so I'm starting all over. I thought I'd post my failed attempt since (hopefully) my actual tdome entry will be totally different anyway.

Dude, you've got some pretty slick work here! I love your painting technique... can I point something out though? Your picture higher up, the "generic grayscale female figure.." I normally don't crit on stuff that's already done since there's virtually no altering it, but since you're planning to use it as a base, I wanted to let you know that below the breast she's all off dude. Female ribcages are smaller then male rib cages since we're designed to bear children and need that unconstrained space... what you've done is given the ribcage, or that plane the light it catching, too much length.. if anything, it should be half that size, if not less... otherwise, everything's hot! *shakes you* RIB CAGES!

Dude, incorporate that face on the screen in your new entry... I can imagine this dark city scape with tons of huge LCD displays of this face looking on the two fighting figures.
