    Southern California - Orange County

I hate to split the SoCal thread like this, but it just seems that between OC, SD and LA, we can never get a proper meet going. I know there aren't a ton of CA artists in OC (omg, could I abuse these 2 letter acronyms any more?), but maybe if we get some regular meets going we can pull some more in, and any of you guys that go to school in the area (I'm look at you, Matt and Greg Smith) could pull in some more locals.

Anyways, yeah...we need to get ourselves a shindig going. Like a monthly thing or something.

I'm in San Diego myself - but yeah, I can totally meet up with Orange County folks.

    Weekends work best for me.

Start setting it up. A monthly OC thing would be good... just pick the details and it's good to go. It'll probably just keep building as long as you get a regular time/place going.

Are you in LA or SD? They both seem to have some regular stuff going on... between Character in LA and the watts people closer to SD.

Forest, you have any interest in going to jetpack's sunday night sketch groups?

Don't think there's much of a chance of me making it to SD on Sunday nights, given that I work monday morning and have to be up at 6:30.

I'm trying to think of where might be a good place to get together and hang out. I'll have to start exploring the coffee shops in the area I suppose. If anyone has any suggestions, post 'em.

Yea, just find a coffee shop with decent seating. What day of the week do you aim to have these on? I might know acouple people I could get to come.

Jah count me in. San Bernardino here. Glad OC has its own thread now

Hope this thing picks up. We have a lot of CA peeps from the long beach area who'll be interested too. Guess the thread just needs more exposure so we can get more participants.

Btw, CSFU = Cal State Fullerton.

    OC Group

A group just for Orange County would be great! Depending on time of day / day of week, the Alta Coffee House in the Cannery district in Newport could be good. I think parking is free down there on Sundays. Anybody know of good locations in Costa Mesa or Irvine?

I like how the SD one goes late into the night, but I'm not sure if people around here would be up for that.

I work, so yeah..no late night weekday/Sunday night ones for me.

Irvine is dead after 10pm (even the coffee houses close at 10..how lame!)

I could do a Newport one. Not familiar with the Alta. That's not were Rock'n'Java used to be is it?

I think Rock N Java was off 17th and Newport in Costa Mesa next to the Tower Records (sound right?) but Alta is this old school coffee house in Newport Beach on the Peninsula. You take the bridge over PCH, make the first left, pass the Lido Theatre on the right, drive as if to the Cannery restaurant and make a left at the stop and it's on your right. Information would have the correct address. If you've never been, it's worth checking out. They exhibit local artists, and bring in bands and have spoken word stuff on different nights. But like someone said... Denny's always works. And there's one right there on the corner of 17th and Newport in Costa Mesa.

Hmm, not familiar enough with the CM area to know exactly where that is, but I have a vague idea. And yeah, I think that sounds about right for Rock N Java..I think it's still there, just with a new name.

I love the atmosphere of coffee shops, but when it comes to gettin' a group of people together, especially people for sketching, they can be a pain. Especially if it's popular. It can be hard to find seating, etc... At least with Dennys, dispite the fact that it brings back bad post high school flashbacks you can get a table that seats everyone.

OK, I'll try to get the ball rolling with a few polls...first one as to what day of the week is good for everyone.

    *edit*

Ah, weak sauce. Either I can't add a poll on edit, or this sub-forum just doesn't accept a poll.

    Just blat it out then.

I'm with Saturday, as well. Although, I won't be able to come for the next few weeks because school is starting again. But, once the workload steadies and I know how to manage my time, I'll be able to come.

    Saturday night works.

Another location suggestion is the Denny's off of Culver Drive and the 5 freeway in Irvine. Easy to find, and central.

Gnomon Workshop first weekend of November

anyone going? me and 2 buds are gonna hit it up. only 75 bucks for two days. if you need a place to crash i can prolly convince my roommates to let a few people sleep in the living room. i'm about 15 minutes away. (in LA terms, we all know that's about 45 mins with traffic =p )

Sorry I sorta abandoned this thread. I sorta stopped coming around CA as much. Plus, for some reason, my email notifications stopped working. WTF.

Haha at Dennys on Culver. Maaan, I spent so much time at DoC after high school. Before they remodelled and upped the prices. Pff..who are they fooling.

So uh..yeah. School has restarted for me...my Saturday days are full but evenings are cool. The next few weekends suck for me but I'll go ahead and set a date, kinda far in advance, and hopefully we'll get some shows.

Saturday Nov. 19th, 8:00pm - Dennys On Culver (Irvine):

    From North County:
5 South - Exit Culver. Turn right. Turn left at...first light? It's literally right there, you can't miss it.

    From South County:
5 North - Exit Culver (dumps you onto a different street). Turn Left, then Left again on to culver. Under the freeway. Turn left at first light after freeway.

I figure Irvine is mostly Central OC. Clean and safe. Denny's open 24 hours.

Respond if you think you can make it.

Are you pushing it back a week then? I'm not making it to the workshop reguardless, so I'll plan to go either week.

What is it with that workshop anyhow? Looks as bad as other indy schools to me. Like "DeVry" fer instance? The local CC can provide the same training for less. The ideas still have to come from yourself, though.

I've been to the Comic Con too many times to fall for things like that now

The way I see things, just do your own stuff, and soon enough people will notice it. eventually.

Just a thought. If I'm wrong, let me know, 'k?
