    Help with a Website

Just have a quick question... Anyone know of a decent (free) webhosting service they would recomend. I'm a nub in this department, so I don't even know where to begin. Thanks in advance.

In my experience, there are no decent free webhosts. If it's free, It probably mean you have to have their banner on the site everywhere. And that is not decent in my book. If you are ok with this there are plenty. Geocities is a classic for instance...

Failing Geocities, whose use of adverts frankly scares me, I always found Topcities to be a reliable freehost when I first started plunging into web design. There's only ever one banner to deal with that can be AdBlocked away in Firefox anyway. Still, it's a major compromise when some web hosts will have you for only $5 a month at generous amounts of storage.

I would never bother with a free web host no matter what, it's just so crap. Google for some cheap hosting, they are dirt cheap.. really really cheap, I would seriously ask you to invest in that.. nothing worse then going to a portfolio site and seeing bunch of ads and pop ups, makes you wonder if you are at a porn site or something.

Check sitepoint.com it's webmasters forum, one of the biggest. THere are plenty of resources there and you can start your search from there.

hey Exile, I'm gonna disagree with what everyone here said about free webhosts, I've been using Doteasy.com for about three years and I haven't had any problems with it... it's free, and there is no banners or pop-ups, check it out!

Ok, now that Doteasy-thing seems interesting. A free small webhost, 100M storage, banner-free and all? There must be catch...

-hmm, after exploring doteasy.com, it seems like they will host you for free, but there is a $25 dollar fee to register the domain name...

If you're looking to keep costs down to, uh, nothing, there are also a handful of services that'll give you free domain names, or rather subdomians, but I'd have assumed doteasy would give you a subdomain anyway... I'll see if I can dredge up some URLs but Google may be worth a go again.

I agree that there are no decent free webhosts. If you just want to host images, perhaps Flickr or Shutterbook would suffice. But usually you will find free hosts a) severely lacking on server specs / bandwidth b) placing ads on your site and c) often unprofessional services that offer no support.

The best idea is to go with a cheap reputable source.

Dreamhost is a good one, Cyberpixels is another.

And of course, there is always myself :]
