Hi! I'm new around here and decided to take up the suggestions some of the people in the lounge said and start my own digital sketchbook. hopefully i can keep at least weekly updates. but here goes nothing! heres a self portrait i did for about a half and hour while talking on the phone (i had a headset on, hence no phone)



Tell me what you think. i'll update with more sketchs...probably older ones within tonight, tommorow and through out the weeked.

Nice so far, I'd like some mroe drawings showing your line work though, your eyes are a little bit off.

thanks...i'm in the process of uploading some older stuff right now...and then later tonight or tommorow i'll scan in some actual pieces that are in my current sketch book.

although i have to admit, most of these are just sketchs that are done to vent, amuse myself, or other things and i guess arnt serious study....i'm hopeing to change that soon too. but bear with me

this was a doodle i did inbetween a church bible study descusion. theres something about it that i like, so here you go:

This was practice useing an actual ink well and nib. i had never used one before. the grain of the paper was very rough so the edges of this are probably really shacky. i used a reference from a magazine of a flower vase...the angel was holding the vase inbetween its wings...if you were wondering where the vase part came in. but i guess i stylized the wings cause you cant tell they were curved around anything...oh well, its also an older piece:

Haha! Laugh at my newbtastic skills!! this was my first attempt at drawing a car. This was my first car, and i just sat in front of it and tried...after the front grill it all went down hill...but i thought it would be an interesting thing to post at the begining.

As the subject line states i have new sketchs. these are from my most recent sketch book...still these arnt studies persay but they are more developed towards my current thinking of artwork. i need to work more on my anatomy, consistancy, values, volume, and perspective. still i guess this is alright for now:


I know her right arm (our left) is a little long for her torso...and her hips are probably pivited wrong...but i'll let you guys be the judge of that. she was inspired by some fashion models i had seen on tv. i like her moody expression...the headshots were practice to try and re-make that moody expression. dont know if i succed though.


I was sitting outside when my kitty Morris came over to eat, and then came to join me. so i doodled his back end (the tiny scribble in the center) and then i tried to capture his face, very quickly (he doesnt stand still for long.) they were done in charcoal...and the other was just some abstract scribbles to fill in the space. i was still tinkering with abstract art at the time (which i should countinue)


Concept art for a uniform/outfit for my character Tsunde...as well as haircut ideas. she's supoused to look like a boy, hence the short hair and small breasts...i just thought this sheet gave you guys an insight on how i doodle across a page in my book.


and this is the mos recent piece of all. i did this like two nights ago while talking on the phone. again it was just basic doodles, but i was trying to concentrate on the figure...i was tired though. i kind of like the semi-self-portrait thing on the bottom left...even if the eyes are too big...theres something about it i like.

so there you go guys, bombs away...dont hold back. and maybe i'll go off and draw some more.

QUESTION: what do you prefer to use? a mechanical pencil or a regular ol number 2 pencil? what do you suggest i use? i use a mechanical 5.0 pencil...but some times i doodle with a regular ol pencil.

as a reply to your question, i quite enjoy .05 mechanical pencils, but i go through phases, right now, i am liking teh ball point pen. woot!

thanks for the comments. i want to try harder at drawing better, so i figured this would be the best place to start off with, cause the critisim can be harsh sometimes. (I figured i would get used to it, seeing as i am planning to go to the art insititure of Fort. Lauderdale in january...might as well get used to being told whats wrong.)

i'm glad to see i'm not the only one who goes through phases with their drawing utensils? it makes me happy to hear that.

More sketchs! but these are from the past few hours!!! YAAAAAY!


Chihiro and NoFace from Hayao Miyazaki's "Spirited Away." i love Hayao Miyazaki...hes my idle, and from time to time i take a break from my art and try to draw in his style...this was a pen doodle. i looked up and saw my poster and felt like drawing no face, then i added in Chihiro. i really like this doodle!


More doodles, trying to add more volume to my illustrations...the two on the top left corner are supoused to be a character named Inez from a manga called "Arcana." the one in the middle, i dunno just a woman, same with the one on the top right hand corner. the one shaded on the bottom right is Yorda from the playstation2 game ICO. awesome game BTW. and the rest is random doodles.

Just a headshot i doodled up in Opencanvas...i liked it...but looking at it now i'm not so sure i like it that much.


i dunno i just wanted to try and get the basic shape of the female body useing just color blocking...i saw a few others doing it around here...but it didnt come out very well...

...i guess i lost interest cuase i'm tired and pretty upset at the moment.

woot for more updates! nifteh! since i hate giving crits, i'll just say this, try flipping or mirroring (if that's a word), the first picture. but, like you said, looking back, you may not like it as much. i know how that goes. bleh! anyway, keep up the sketchage! woot! .

Great thread of sketches, but over-all I really like that last one! I think the lighting looks awesome, as do all the little details. And this might sound really funny, but I like how you draw legs. XD Probably because I'm still learning to do them, and you make them look so easy!

@OleOlsen: Emotions are good for drawing from, but sometimes they render me incapable of doing anything. its been a bad week. ^_^;

@Kat_warrior:thanks for finding my sketchs well. it gives me a boost of encouragment to keep on going, which is something i'll be needing when and if i start college soon.

Ok new illustrations, but first a couple of questions:

Can someone give me any hints as to how to keep my realism eyes alligned properly?

Also i would appreciate it if someone would tell me/show me some different techniques for getting gesture drawings? so that i can get different poses and practice moveing the human body properly.

Now onto illustrations:

I pulled out my "Atlas of Human Anatomy for the Artist" by Stephen Rogers Peck, and decided to do some drawings out of it, so here they are:

1.) Male Anatomy:



2.) Mainly eyes, ears and noses:

these are some points i follow when doing realism portraits and stuff
from some book i found...for get what it is

- Width of the eye is 1/5 (1 unit) of the width of the whole head(if put head on graph)

- The space between the eyes is 1 unit

- eyes are halfway down the length of the head
its also good to draw a line connecting both pupils to keep them from looking uneven...

of course some faces will be different depending on the person but everyface has similar proportions in relation to eyes nose mouth and ears...

or thats what i've been taught...

For gestures, I always found it helpful to draw a sweeping line from the top of the head to the bottom of one of the feet. If a figure is arching backwards, find the strongest line of action and put that down first: in that pose, it should look like a 'c'. I like the way you continue a line from the thigh and curl it around into the calf muscle. Once you have a better understanding of anatomy (let's see those muscle studies! ) those gestures will look too cool!

i think i understand what you mean. I really have no traditional training when it comes to draw the human anatomy...all of that is self taught. (shadeing, still lifes, basic color therory i learned in high school.) so i look through alot of peoples art books and wonder about how they go about and do it. but i see what you mean and its a very interesting concept. thanks for the hint.
