    Madplanet's sketches (updated 3-4-07)

Hey, everyone. I've been loitering at CA for about a month now and I haven't posted any work, so I figured I'd start with my sketchbook. These are some from the past few months.

Transitory- Thanks a lot for the comments and I will post more. I have some sketches from my last sketchbook that I think are much better and would like to hear what you think of those, too. I looked at your sketchbook yesterday and I liked what I saw.

Anna- Thank you, too. Your comments are encouraging. I think you should try to draw. You are around art and artists and you definitely know what you are talking about when it comes to that, so go for it!

The sketches that I showed here (the 3rd and 4th ones) are for an idea I have for a colored pencil drawing. It's four portraits of fictional (except one) characters who I think have similar personalities. It's kind of like The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Not the movie, which I didn't like, but the comic. My characters are Papillon, Holden Caufield (Catcher In the Rye), Don Quixote, and Montag (Fahrenheit 451). They are all struggling against something. What do you think?

    madplanet, thanks!

I believe I should really start drawing

As for the sketches, I like the idea of portraying these 4 characters together. BTW it is very interesting what things of common different people find in different objects. I cannot but agree that the idea of struggling unites these characters. I believe that this very idea should be reflected very vividly in the drawing, though i don't know how it can be realized... Just my 2 cent...

Anna: Always appreciate the 2 cents worth... I hope that I can achieve this sense of struggle, the longing in their own ways that I think that they all possess. I've been working on it quite a bit this past week.

ArtisticSchmidt: Thanks for the comments and for stopping by to have a look.

Here are some more sketches for pieces that I will do. I will do them... I have to tell myself that.

Here are some sketches from the last few days. It's not much, but I'm glad that I at least did something.

Below are some sketches from an anatomy book.

I had trouble making the tentacles look like tentacles. They just don't flow well.

I seem to be all over the place and sometimes I wonder if that hurts me...

Bumskee: Thanks for the comments; very encouraging.

I've done some work here on hands. These are from an anatomy book for reference. I've always been very bad at drawing hands and have cheated a lot by hiding them in the past, so I.m going to put some effort into doing them better. I recently read an article on drawing hands and that gave me some helpful tips. If anyone has some advice for me, I would gladly listen.

    madplanet, the sketches are cool!

i like the hand studies - they look very natural. Also admire your creativeness...
How is the work on 4 portraits going? I like the idea very much, that's why i'm asking.

I'm really loving your hand studies, and the ink sketches really stand out. Are you planning to do sketch-16 in ink? I'm rather fond of the idea in the sketch.

What are you using when you are drawing with the ink if I may ask?

Also I think your hand studies are great, you seem like you are on the right track there as far as learning the hand, I know you asked for tips, but I can't think of any... do you have any tips?

well I've officially been inspired, going to go sketch in some ink now!

    take care

Hello! Like your work. The special sympathy goes to some old lady who carries all her clocks with her (or maybe it's Voltaire in grumpy mood), the checkered Pilot, Abyss, sketches of faces and Mentler's portrait (the nose should go the opposite way ).

Anna: Thanks for your thoughts. They are always upbeat.

Mentler: Thanks again for dropping by, always inspiring. I think that that drawing is now known as the Mentler Portrait. The hat must be yours, I could have sworn you put it on before stumbling in front of that light thingie...

Marie: Thanks so much for the compliments. I am planning to do that sketch in ink and I want to do it in color too. This will kickstart my ambition a little. As for the ink pens I use, they are Pilot Precise Rolling Ball V5 Extra Fine and Koh-i-noor Nexus in sienna and ebony. Thanks again.

Bumskee: Thanks for the comments, they were nice to hear. And if you think I'm gonna post a sketch everyday...lol.

Sve: Voltaire!!! How cool is that? I just about fell out of my chair when I read that. "Time's winged chariot draws near." Or something like that. I'm glad when someone sees stuff like that in my work. Thank you. And just why should Mentler's nose go the other way, hmm? Seriously, thanks for stopping by, I was really impressed with your figure works.

Here's a couple of water color and ink sketches...

Because it makes him prettier .( diving under a table for covers from a flying object). It was a joke, it was a joke!!! Okay not the opposite way, just shorter http://www.tsofa.com/?faculty

I like the cool technique of the lighthouse drawing. It creates the illusion of a slightly trembling air. What's the story on second drawing? Are they dancing or killing each other.

Ha! And here I thought that you were trying to say that he was arrogant or something. Y'now, upturned nose, get it? Good one, Sve.

He's dancing with a harlequin, joke's on him.

Why? Is it a bad choice to dance with a harlequin?

Well, I don't know if it was a bad choice to dance with a jokester, but I guess he did make a willing choice. Maybe it was a bad try at symbolism...

No, no, not a bad try at all. I like the ambiguity of this and the others of your drawings. Just wanted to dig a little deeper into your subconsciousness .

That may be a dangerous place to go digging, I'm not even safe there.

I'm afraid of being a clown... "Kenny Rogers Chicken bad! Mess you up!" -that one was just on.

Bumskee: I'm usually trying to figure out what I'm talking about, too. lol. Thanks for the compliments.

Here's some of this weekends meanderings:

This one is a reworking of a previous sketch

This one I'm going to do as a watercolor and see how it looks

I don't have a clue what this means, it was in me head, so I did it.

Love the way you drew these hands above.

Hey man, Im liking these inks....Some of them are a little flat, but the style makes up for it. You might want to play around with coreshadows just for the hell of it. Great stuff, though. Keep up the good work.
