Should be certifiably awesome.
Should be certifiably awesome.
nice stuff here, the whale thing looks cool but its a little flat, good update though!
Haha, the whale looks amazing. His face looks pretty funny
The only problem is with his legs, i dont know whether its because of the sort of 'hips' area above them, or whether its that the cloth is covering any joints, but it feels a little awkward. Maybe a more obvious leg/body attachment might make it feel better.
Make it obvious that the legs come out the side and the body curves under between them if that makes sense.
Hope this makes sense.
Great designs though, ive been working on character/cartoon sort of design lately and im REALLY appreciating how well youve designed all these characters. Great stuff man, keep it up.
Phatandy: Thanks! I totally agree...it was such a quicky sketch that I didn't really work out everything...just needed a solid concept to starts thing out. Good luck with the character design stuff!
Krato: Thanks. Hopefully it's a little better with this newer update.
Metal Fingers:Thanks again!
Update: So I started painting...and it's coming along. Some areas are closer to final...other areas I'm still working on (legs)

cool concept but i think it needs a some more light values added to it
you have a really cool style, and I like seeing how you develop the work (the process of it). Keep working hard and I think you'll go far with your work.
jeremyg0rd0n : Thanks man!
Krato: Thanks for the paintover...yeah...I realize it. I"m just now getting going with pulling out the forms and defining values.
Here's an update: I hope to finish it this weekend -- as I'm headed down to St. John's Island on Monday for a week.

Started working on the werewhale comic. Thought I'd post a couple of pages of pencils. I'll be going further into detail when I start painting them, but my hope is that they turn out around the same level as the whale above. Same style.
These are the last two pages of my side of the story. Kinda like a little prequel to the fishing story.

Update:
So I started painting the first page (actually its page 11). This is about 8 hours of painting, and I'd say it's about 80% done. I need to go in an clean up some, add some details, and sharper edges. I'm also thinking of completely redoing panel 2...just not feeling it.
Now on to the other 12 pages in the comic. (All due for Comic-con)

UPDATE: Here's the start of page 2. This one's not really close to final at all, needs to be reworked. Just wanted to post it.
Now I've got to do the rest of the "fishermen" side of the story.

yo j, hope you're well. lookin good, coming along nicely. werewhale painting is pretty sweet too, man. just a small crit for your paintings, i think that pushing the contrast a little bit more (especially in the darks) would give more depth to your paintings. maybe it's just my monitor, too, so take it with a grain of salt, but i think you could stand to add some really dark spots to really give the form some pop. if that's what you want to go for. anyway, g'luck with the pages and the con. btw, the sketchgroup's going to be meeting on thursdays now, most likely; feel free to stop by sometime man. take care, all the best for this project.![]()

Eddieee: Posted another page...hope you like.
Dan Valkar: Hey Dan. Long time. Thanks for stopping by again.
purb36: Hey man. No, you're right. Esp. with these pages too. I'm going to need to pick out a couple of spots of dark...almost black...to weigh things down a bit.
UPDATE:
Here's another page (2pg spread). Very unfinished. This occurs earlier in the story. I think it probably came out a little bit too cartoony --so far for the overall style I want. I'm gonna have to tweak it.

love that character line up.just a note, i think that whale that you went ahead and rendered through, that radial gradient, i feel, kind of detracts from the image of that character. Id suggest to just drop the background to white or a bright complimentary color to your whale to make him pop. Otherwise if youre just trying to set the lighting up do some type of sketchy scene in the back ground to help ground and place your character. I just think that will add to your concept and or make it more of an illustration, either or they would both lead towards a stronger piece.
