Update:
Started working on the cover to my portfolio book. Not really sure if this is the direction I want to go in. Usually I go for the antique look, which works with the historical-mythological illustrations that I do. But I wanted some graphic and bold, something that would stand out. And I didn't want to just throw an image on the cover and be done either.

Still working, I think.

I started laying out the book page by page today and made up a count of what unfinished projects need completing. I really wanted to paint one of those trolls from the other page, so tonight I just that. The face is pretty much done..now onto the body

It's a nice break from the whale story.

Your illustrations have so much character and life, and your resent ones no different!

And thanks for showing your wips, I've learned a lot from them, cheers for that!

Really enjoyed looking tho your Blog and foilo too, such solid work! And what do you do for a job now if you don't mind me asking?

JailHouseRock2: thanks for checking out my blog and portfolio. Right now, I'm the art director for a small community newspaper. Basically all graphic design work. Occasionally I get some freelance Illustrator work and I'd love to get more going.

Troll Finished: Is he appearing really dark to anyone. It looks good on my screen, but I just checked it out on another monitor and it appears almost black. Just curious. I may do another one (from the sketches on the other page) if time allows. I've got to go back and finish up some work for the book in time for Con. Getting down to the wire now.

Liking the colours you use and that big red nose on that 'investigator'.
Reminds me of the work of the illustrations for Spike Millligan books [I think].

Nope, the troll looks great and not a bit dark. And i know you said that you finished the investigator but if for whatever reason you go back and play with him a little more then i would suggest making the coat more 'solid' and pop forward. At the moment it feels a little strange only because it is above the body but dropping behind it, if that makes sense.

Comix: Thanks, man. You may be right. I'll probably be tweaking all of these until the book actually prints.

Still working on the first mate. I really like some parts of it, others I'm struggling with... still working thru it though.

That whale is kinda creepy, but awesome none-the-less. I'd say work with color more, study tetrads and let them limit what you can use.

Jushra: Thanks for the tip. I'll look him up too. I'd really like to start making my colors more subtle...but strong still. Less saturated too.

K. So I just ordered my books for Comic-con this year. I'll be getting 5 or so printed up and then I'll be passing out a "kinkos" style hand-out with the same artwork.

I'm going to have 2 books. A personal portfolio and then Artgasm, which is a shared project with a friend of mine.

In March 2008, I started working on a Brock Sampson painting. I had problems with the drawing, the pose and the painting and after about a week or two I gave up on it.

Today I dug up the old file and decided to give it another go. I kept a lot of the octopus the same, but changed up the pose to what I had always wanted it to convey, that exact moment where he's about to lose.

It's no longer a Brock character, though. And he will have hands, just haven't started painting them yet. And I need to give him a harpoon.

Got back from Con last week. Can't believe it's August already. I need to start busting my hump now. I got loads of crits and really need to start implementing them.

While I was away, CHOW was focusing on Saladin, which I really wanted to try out.
