Darktwin: Thanks man. Not sure if this is what you meant, (perhaps you really mean I should just use larger brush sizes). Anyway - There's been some weird brush issues that seem to come and go, almost with no explanation. Sometimes it seems as though the "real brush" imaging is turned off...but isn't. Sometimes when I dab the brush on the canvas, instead of getting a cool looking, real-bristle brush, I get something that looks like a "target" symbol...and when i move the brush this target symbol just flows in that direction...but I still see the rings in that brush. I guess that's all hard to visualize...I'll try to save a jpg of it next time i notice it.

Here's a quick sketch of Ma'at, goddess of balance and truth.
And I reworked the painting from up above with the guy on the horse-like beast.

Here's the final paint of the one from above. i changed things around a bit. Once I opened up the canvas to be a horizontal landscape, I realized that either the horseman...or the landscape was going to have to dominate. Up above they both competed for space and importance. So, I went with the landscape, and made the horseman smaller.

just a small update. went back and painted one of my old sketches. I'm gearing up for San Diego. Printing up my sketchbooks and new portfolio this week. I can't wait!

Great stuff goin' down as usual, Jason. I have agree with Darktwin tho. Make sure that brush size is larger. I have a similar problem of getting picky with small brushes. But it helps to really block out the values. That said, some of these are kind of muddy and could really use s'more highlights and reflected light to sell the forms better. Dont' forget the basics! And don't forget... contrast is king!

Well, it's been a few weeks now since I last posted in here. Thanks for the comments guys, I would've responded but i've been trying to finish up everything for con.

Just wanted to update with a few sketches/paintings that I never got around to posting. The first one is of the Gateway to the 3rd. Realm and in the second one, I redid the giant scarab (the old one really didn't do it for me.)

Here's one I'm working on tonight.

First I start with the loose sketch


Then I lay in a base color. I like using a burnt umber and I'm pretty much just brush it in messy. I also use a darker (raw) umber for just a few choice shadows.

I decided that I really wanted to paint the face. So I just started painting in some skin color. First I paint the shadow and blend in the lighter parts on top of it.

The new batman movie has me pretty excited. After seeing the new poster I felt like painting Joker myself . I just need to paint in the body and fix the ear.

I really like the progreas on the Joker's face! Nice result using karmin red on the background and making a nice shadows with it. I'm positive shocked on this effect

Hey dude. I was looking at the Herald entries and found yours intriguing, so I decided to check out your sketchbook. These are awesome! I loved the men's faces on the first page. I loved the amount of character in their faces.

Kerberos Thanks man. Glad you liked the Herald one.

mariusz. I like how the red came out too. I usually use a brownish/red color as a base, but in this case I tweaked it more purple-ish to go with Joker's color scheme and to compliment the green hair.

Here's my Herald of the Queen piece for CHOW #99.
The brief:
The Herald is a powerful member of the Queens' court, announcing her arrival and departure, and acts as her body guard and protector. A knight of unrivaled power, The Herald is the one who champions the Queen and all her ventures.

This character must be powerful. Watch your anatomy - we need a heroic, but believable character. This character needs to look the part - poised, strong, in control even in adverse situation.

The character needs to be executed in a more realistic manner - no cartoons or comic styles will be accepted.

I basically just started by sketching a heroic pose and almost immediately thought it would be cool to show a guy hanging on the side of a large beast of burden. I really wanted to do a pre-historic theme and picked on doing a winter travel scene w/ mammoth like creatures. My idea is that here the queen is returning to her palace after a long journey thru the wilderness. The briefing also mentioned that since this is CHOW 99, it's also the end of an era...with that in mind I went for a sunset color scheme, where everything was already in shadows except for the Queen and just the top of the Herald. I was kind of going for...he's lifting himself up to her level, where the last moments of sunlight are, to announce her coming.

Here's the sketch for Chow 100: Medusa.

There's a lot of different takes on the myth of Medusa. Some say she was beautiful, others say she was horrific. I'm gonna go with beauty. I want to give her a sense of great power and elegance...with just her dress and armor (and hair) being beautiful as well, but also horrific.
