Anybody else laugh at the Deviant Art "Summit"?

It's being called the first gathering of an online artists community.

I sat and laughed at the tv (it was on G4TechTV) when they got excited about it.

PSSSHHHH!!!!! I can't wait until the online workshops personally, seeing as I'm to poor to travel about to the real workshops.

I wouldn't necessarily laugh at them. There are some really good artists among them but they're like diamonds in a disused coal mine. Hard to find, but they're there.

I didn't laugh at it myself, honestly, I was kind of curious about it. Not enough to interest me in dealing with the responsibilities involved with going cross country to attend, but curious enough to wait for the feedback and see what propects it turned out.

Got some recommendations? I'm interested in comic, fantasy, concept, and manga/anime arts. The ones I know currently are LeSean, diablo2003 (Matt Brooks), questionstar, among others.

Other than Ukitakumuki and Artgerm, there are:

    Enayla (Linda Bergkvist),
    Plangdon2,
    Antifan-real,
    Jasinski,
    Anry,
    Randis,
    Yaro42,
    Sweetmoon,
    Noah-kh,
    Krecha,
    Cakes,

and many others. Just add ".deviantart.com" after their names to look at their devart page. Hoon also posts there.

You may want to laugh at them if it makes you feel better about your own art. But I wouldn't.

I'll agree that there are good artists on there, but the summit seemed like it was just whoring out the best so that more people would know of DA. I myself have a DA account, and I know some good people on there, but the event is what gets me. Did anyone learn anything there, was it available to anyone on DA?

It just seemed like a way for them to get some attention.

I find DA too much effort for the reward. With so many pros and skilled amateurs all over CA I don't see a point in DA. Not to mention the piss-poor website template. And usually (USUALLY) the good DA artists are just skilled in some some form of anime.. I find that with the best on DA it usually looks like amazing fanart, but still, that fanart FEEL nonetheless, even if it's an original picture.

What are you talking about? There's all kinds of good artists on DA, and with those good artists, their work look pretty original to me.

I personally find the DA interface more convenient for me to browse through all the artists' works/activities and to keep track of their new artworks/sketches.

Hmm. maybe I just have'nt looked around enough. The only time I ever do go on there is when people from anime conventions are what not give me thier DA addresss.. I did'nt mean for that all to sound to judgemental either. I don't have a way with words.

The numbers I'm seeing off of the Poll alone are screaming disappointment to me. Nearly 700 of the folks who replied, attended the summit, and almost 400 of them couldn't say they had an enjoyable experience. That's well over half the folks who went. I really don't see that as an entirely good thing, even if this poll is slightly off. I suppose it's something to look into with more depth in the future, but I have to be honest, the lack of interest has already declared itself with the near 11,000 didn't attend responses. Then again, when I saw that newsbit on TokyoPop reviewing portfolios, but there was no function for folks to respond to that, I didn't get much of a good vibe at that point. The most dubious thing to me was that a good number of the sponsors for the summit, are pretty much sponsors or affiliates with deviantart to begin already, so the credibility of the event was waining well before it started.

I don't believe that poll. I think it's just some jerks voting no even if they never went. I actually took the time to look at the replies there, and sadly, I didn't find any reply regarding why the experience was not enjoyable (although that's two days ago, with 70 voted no, 60 voted yes)

Anyway, I dont see why anyone should laugh at the summit if they did not go. Why bother? you didn't spend money, why would you care? And I have to say no matter what their purpose is, DA had spent lot of effort on the summit, so kudos to them. There are tons more cons going around, don't see why make fun on this one alone.

G4 should check their show archives. I think they did a spot on a rather intense workshop in Austin last year.

    I wouldnt laugh.

    *snickers*

Anyways, with too many not-so-good anime-styled and pro-photographer wannabe its hard to find really good people in there, but they do exists. I say why the pros aint joining it is because the lack of focus given to them. I think they need to start a requirement for having a booth there.

Then again, I never been there and dunno what has happened really. So forgive me if Im wrong or anything.

A bunch of artists got together. A lot of them were probably "n00bs." I'm sure a few of them kicked butt. But the point is, a lot of people who liked art (even if it's not the kind of art you like) got together.

How is this a bad thing?

I certainly didn't go..there was probably nothing there for me. But why is it something to laugh at? IMHO, the more events like the CA workshops and the DA meets that happen, the better.

Heh, some very understandable view points, I definitly relieze I made an ass out of myself. I think this was more my opinion after watching the G4TechTV thing on the DA gathering.

While the gathering of artists is indeed a good thing, it was made out to be the first online art community gathering, which as Mr. Manley stated, and is quite obvious to any one who's spent any time on Concept Art, it's not the first.

Also, to me it just seemed like a laughable event because they we're just whoring out the good artists, unless I looked at this the wrong way and people learned stuff there.

I just think if they put together an event where people work to get there, that there should be workshops, or sketch events, anything that would inspire the people, and not just wow them. If I just want to be wowed by DA, I could spend some time going through people's fav's until I found some good stuff.

Now.....I could be wrong.....and could be making myself into an even bigger ass. It's completly possible.

But....I'm just a CA fan boy.

That's an intense poll.... but considering the number of stuff that's actually worth looking at on DA... uh... well... that's really bad.
