As I stated before on MSN... that sci-fi one is brilliant. I love how the light just reacts with everything. You've got so much knowledge in your brain and you know where to put colors where I would never have dreamt to put them.

Haha, yes, I haven't done outside studies, but I love Loomis' stuff. What is the easiest form of color to take with you around town? Pastels (non-oil kind) or just colored pencils? I've always wanted to like use watercolors, though I thought that they would be too messy in the cafe of Starbucks. Hehe

Keep it up, those faces look quite fine. And why dont you use a different coffee place instead of Starbucks. Denny's perhaps or Perkins (if you know of that resturant).

Gotta go to work. I'l explain later. I am going to go through all my notes from last year before I start a new book this year. I'l be doing graphics and explain the best I can. THis is to benifit me and help others.

To be able to Paint Realistically you have to
understand planes and how they control the values
that you see, you must understand that each
object you are painting has it's own value range
that allows it to appear white or black, or
medium value. many people feel values and paint
until it looks right. This is not a good approach
and is deceiving to the beginner because You must
first learn to paint with fact and feeling will
follow in time.

I've played guitar for 5 years and when I
first started I loved to play around and play
what I felt like, just making up stuff. Honestly,
it all sounded horrible because I had no
knowledge of scales and where notes were located
on the fretbboard, But now with a good foundation
in scales and notes I can Play with feeling and
make up stuff as I go. This is how painting
realistically should be done. "feeling values"
should be built upon fact as a foundation so your
mind learns to understand light as a whole.
Light may seem like just random particles that
illuminate objects and create shadows magically,
but there is much more going on.

Value comes first before anything, Color and
saturation should be studied only after you
understand values and their relationships with
different planes and materials. Light at it's
core is the arrangement of values in the right
order, but to truly paint light, color and
saturation must also be arranged in the right
order. This is because Light works in conjunction
with the eye to allow you to see. The eye is a
machine that has rules that it follows so that we
may see form and not flat 1 value objects. Train
your mind to think as a 3d program, and focus on
the planes ( geometry) of what you are painting.
Though this may seem complicated and crazy at the
surface ( a 3d program!) it is actually very
simple. Most people over complicate things by
painting far to many values in the shadows. You
can paint with just one value for light, one for
highlight, one core shadow, and one for shadow
with reflected light. That's just 4 values and
remember that the cast shadow is roughly the same value
as the core shadow if it falls on the same object.

both can learn as we go and I can improve from
your thoughts and feedback.

Very nice stuff. I love the note taking. I wish my notes were that indepth. Occationally I get bored and dont know what to draw. But you inspire me to keep at it. Thanks for the tips on the light. I must learn VALUES!!

I should mention all the note images I paint are done from notes and not from life. sometimes little sketches and other times words.

Here we have a simple object placed in front of a
window. The table that it is placed on is not
white but is "glossy" so it picks up the
reflection of the sky. The reflection goes
straight down and does not follow the perspective (planes)
of the surface it is viewed on. See how it is
"overlayed on the sides of the cups shadow.

The sky is not white? right. since I was sitting
inside my eyes were adjusted for indoors and the
outside sky and lights were higher in value
because my eyes adjusted to give more values to
the objects indoors. I know theres a better way
to explain this but I gotta go to work now. I'l
update with a graphic explaining indoor and
outdoor adjustments because I really need to know
how it works.

Nice, thread, bro. Keep at it. I think your pencils still coul use some work. Up that contrast a bit. Really think about those cast shadows being cast darkest. Reflected light too. Comin' along! Keep it up!!

ZebzFree : Thanks. Yea my pencils could use a ton of work. I need to use charcoal instead of pencils because charcoal has a larger value and I could work much faster.

Haha! I think you know to much about vaule! Seem like when you draw with your pencil you try to put every rule in the book about vaule and makes your drawings look very hard? I dont really know how to put it but maybe try to lossen up and sometimes not use every rule you know... Keep up the good work chris///

Fantastic speedpaintings. Especially the last one.
I can see that you like strong light that gives very dark shadows and bright highlights. Maybe try some environment with more distracted light. It doesn't look as much impressive but your range of subjects to paint from imagination will increase .
