    Midnight's Sketchbook *updated 22nd February*

Please scroll to end for latest pics!

    Hi everyone!

Try as I might, I'm certain this isn't going to be a 'daily' thing, but I'll add to it when I have something new to show you all. Mostly, this stuff will be a collection of loose sketches and concepts.

This is quite an old piece, which I did while playing a game of Monopoly:

This is what happens when someone who's only ever used pencils and digital media gets his hands on an inking pen, with no idea how to use it and no idea what he's going to do until it's practically finished (I *really* should have made a pencil sketch first, but there you go...)!

I had a spare 10 minutes, I was bored, and I had a book about the English Civil War handy. Hence:

Everyone loves really old, random sketchings!

A warm-up before I went to life drawing:

A piece done at life drawing:

Another one done while bored, but I didn't have anything to hand this time:

    A cowboy:

    More random goodness!

For some reason, this one was great fun to do:

Finally, the concept for the pic I'm working on at the moment:

    I hope you like them!

20\6\05 - some oldies I couldn't find yesterday moring, and some new ones.

The oldies - young woman in pen

    'Baphomet'

    More hands:

    Female nude:

A sketch done while waiting outside Ludlow Castle:

A super-fast sketch of my little brother:

My first attempt at a cartoon style:

    A toon of Gandhi:

    A toon of me:

The new stuff - a bald head:

    Another collection of random scribbles!

Heh, one more rapid sketch here - anyone ever play Ultima VII: The Black Gate? One of my favourite game villains of all time:

the first one of the solider is great. lots of good stuff there w/ the face and shading! your anatomy studies are too focused on outlines and not enough on form...work general shapes and try to fine tune the image over time.

    keep it up

your last 'sketch' is the best of all your posts because you probably did it without being too tight in that you 'rushed' it. i'd work more with gestures and try to get looser, hold your pencil nearer to the eraser and let the form flow rather than be rigid.

Choose your best piece and post that instead.

ApolloNuevo - yeah, form is something I'm working on right now

Gregory Wohlwend - that was probably the fastest one I ever did! I'm not inclined towards looseness, but, again it's something I'm trying to work on (sod's law, though - every loose thing since has been *awful*!).

Sems - I'm working more with pencil right now, but there should be some more inked works before too long!

goosehole - pruning the list of 'to be put up' pics right now...

Pixeldragoon - thanks. Hands have been a real pain for a while, so it's good to know I'm getting somewhere!

Anyway, I'll put up a few more pics:

    Got to soften those lines!

Next time... possibly something other than heads!

wi_2 - thanks for the encouragement!

Alright then, here're a couple of sketches done from ref -

    An elephant:

    Some gorillas:

To finish, a ninja. Yes, I know the thumbnail bears little relation to the sketch

Well, I've been messing around with inks lately, and have absolutely nothing of any value to post with them

I've also been working on getting some more movement in my figures (and I *will*, at some point, work on a complete pencil *drawing*, as opposed to more sketches... ):

Hmm - the more I look at that battlemage, the more obscene his gesture becomes...

So, it dawned on my that I don't actually know how to use a pencil...

It also dawned on me that, when trying to draw, it helps to have a solid surface, and not have shedloads of sheets underneath the one I'm using...

Still got to work on control, I think:

styler, Badger, seth1 - thanks, guys!
Ben - aww, damn, you've let the whole world know now...

Quick and dirty, this sheet (a result of bombarding my brain with images from B5 and Games Workshop):

I'll probably try and get some more detailed\careful pencil work done (as soon as I figure out how...) soon, and hopefully some more interesting creatures.

Ben - thanks. I don't do enough colour work, which is something I need to change.

Right then - here's a speedpainted flak spider-mech, done in a much looser style than anything I've tried before:

Another couple of pics here - first, a no ref croc (or alligator... heh):

Secondly, I wanted to throw myself off a bit, and try a coloured cartoon style. Several crap attempts later, I decided to resort to something simple to get the hang of it:

    Thanks, blacky!

New stuff - I've not had a lot of time for painting, so it's just pencil work:

    Something's gone screwball.

Okay, this post is just a test - I added to my SB a few hours ago (which can be seen by the time of the previous post and the time of this one), yet my SB remains several pages back, and it currently says that the last post was by Blacky.

I'm posting this to see if it kicks things back into order.

EDIT: right, that seems to have sorted it. No idea what was going on there!

    Cool to see an update!
I think being a bit more hardcore with your darks would be a good idea, do some pen work, less hairy lines, fairy boy!

You seem to be chucking in things occasionally that just don’t work, and knock your pics off. Like in your latest update, the claw on the lowest guy, just looks totally flat and undynamic. And the shapes behind that girl up top there, are they attached or are they just graphic elements? There’s just something about this stuff that, I feel, lowers the visual impact, because it isn’t up to the quality of the rest, and look a little like its just been slapped on for show?
But I understand these are just sketches, and its great to explore new things, rock on!

Please sir, can I have some more?

    ~ Ben
