    bengonzalez's Sketchbook

Well I will start this off with something that I did a few months ago and an new sketch from my practice at copying/learning from the masters.

My attempt and Manga more specifically an RPG character of mine from Exalted.

And this is a Copy of a detail from one of El Greco's paintings.

start forcing yourself to do quick 2 minute studies over and over. first you have to learn the emotion and feel behind what you are drawing, once you have that THEN you can render..

keep it up though, you'll only get better

Thanks for the comment and yes I have to work on gestures. lets see if I can do some for next time. anyway all i had time for today were these two. The fist one is me revisiting my favorite character pose I used in High.

This one is a preliminary sketch for a something I got swiming in my head. just trying to workout a perspective to use. don't have it there yet.

You have very nice proportions and anatomy. The figures seem really fluid. I think you might do well to work a little on your rendering and maybe work the values more. Still, very inspiring work!

    Shiva

Thank you masterpug. I do need to learn a lot about rendering my images. The anatomy is something that I think I will always be learning. something new crops up all the time. maybe some more rendering studies are in order.

Well here is my image from today. studying Indian Culture at the moment.

Alisa - Borikua means someone from Puerto Rico. as to the thumbnail they are indead a great way to plan a page. that particular one is for a Changeling fan project, over on shadownessence.com, called Fomorians: Lords of Nightmare

Well here is a character Facial study. All front views to try and nail the look down. I will probably do a 3/4 view to see what I get.

Ole thanks for stopping by. I know that my anatomy is weak but I'm trying to work on it daily. Using Bridgman and doing some studies from life.

Here is todays page. the torso is from Bridgman and the hand and feet are my own.

I figured that since I have had some request for color I would cap this page of the thread with a color study. Starting off with baby steps. here is a flower color study done in color pencil, Marker, and Graphite.

thanks nutter I needed that little break in posts. I might go back and try and finish the vamp one of these days. Yeah I didn't think the selfportrait would look so disturbing. I surprised even myself on that one.

quick sketch. Prismacolor and blue white mowhawk paper.

Keep up the studies ben. I noticed your latest movement studies were a bit rigid, try and keep things loose, let your lines flow with the movement. Good to see you posting a lot, keep it up!

Hey ben! Nice work you have going on here! A thing I'm seeing though is that the faces seem like they have no muscle structure. I'm sure i can't explain this properly but... try lighting sketching a skill and drawing the face over top of it. you may notice a difference!!

I dig the lines in http://img198.imageshack.us/img198/8...eghosts1nd.jpg
Kinda reminds me of the old school press blocks.

The two things I think you need to focus on the most right now are a basic structure of the figure to rely on so you can get some good proportion, and forms in space. For the former I suggest maybe picking up Andrew Loomis' skeletal gesture or manikin system for a good start. And for the latter, buy some basic primitives (square, sphere, cones, etc) and study how they turn in space and perspective so you can use this knowledge and apply it to parts of the figure. Geroge Bridgman also has some good books on this with the relation of blocks to body parts in space.

    Definitely keep it up.

be careful about your lineweight, for example

in the mouth and around the eyes, try not thinking about the lines the features make but how light or dark each area is.

Danomight: I see your point and I'll try to loosen up a bit more and let the lines flow.

Interceptor: I'm going to see if I can get some time to try that out. I really have to shake the bad habits that I picked up over the years, short handing faces is one of them.

redFIVE: Ha I didn't see the woodblock look before in it. Maybe now I can say it was intentional. But It's just me not relying on my shaky hand to make good lines something I'm working on. Thanks for all of the advise. I need to go and do some basic studies desperately.

Snowsfall: You have hit on the bane of my drawing skills "Line Quality". very good explanation.

Here is a little something from today. I'm working on logos and had to do some animal research. just did this study now that I'm done. Never really done many animals.

    Line work from ref

Very nice use of the line in that stag/deer/elk thing, especially in the face, where you nailed its structure and perspective with minimal line.

I would agree with redFive to focus on structure in your figures, especially in regards to tone. For example, even though the 2nd self portrait is well-shaded with a good range from the lightest light to darkest dark, there are still parts of it that feel "flat". Think about what 3 diminesional blocks and volumes make up the parts of the face. Doing tonal studies on blocks and cones and such, and then applying those to the figure may help a lot.

Wertle: I'll see If I can get to some more tone work soon. and to see if I can get it right.

Interceptor: I don't offend easily so don't worry about it I can read past the typos.

well here is my next one in the Speedball series. Kind of like the way the power manifests it has that buildup of power that I was going for.

one hundred posts to my dear little thread.

Well did this ref study using prismacolor black pencil. just trying to get used to the permanence of it and the darkness of it. The hands seem to have stomped me on this one. I think it will be anatomy study time soon. Time to crack open bridgman again.
