Crystalline Blue's *dead* Sketch Book (going to make new one)

Quick intro before I post some pictures. I started drawing about two months ago. The first thing that got me inspired into drawing was manga <_< >_>, at first thats what i wanted to draw. But I quickly realised the importance of figure studies, anatomy etc. So Im concentrating on that 100%.
C+C really welcome, so I can see where im going wrong, thanks

Did this piccy earlier.. with a reference, Im useless at drawing heads and faces, so went to basics. Gonna try and learn this. I can see some really obvious problems. The skull on the left is really long and so is the one on the right. But I think my camera may have distorted the picture slighty (my excuse).

I have't practiced drawing faces for ages, here's a few a I did recently. References were used, but I did try to construct them

Good start, I suggest reading Betty edwards drawing on the right side of the brain or have a little look at some anatomy, good start though would like to see more.

More pictures! Did another skull study, this time I used a pencil, so I could correct the mistakes I made.. not like I made many



I hope these studies are going to give me a better idea of space.

On the simple picture you tried w/o reference, her neck is way too thin. Looks liek her neck will just snap! Keep studying anaomy, you're on the right track.

Have a look at the skull study you did in your first post and compare it to the one in your most recent post -- you'll notice in the first there is a slight slant to the features on the front of the face, I believe that is how it should be, not vertical as in the second one! Also the skull in the first post is VERY thin (the front-view one) I'm sure you noticed this already though!

Keep up with the face and anatomy studies, you draw more like me than you probably realise at the moment. In one years time we should do a thunderdome like challenge and see how much we have both improved if you are up for it?

My advice to you is to think a lot more when drawing things about the forms -- if you're drawing a cylindrical form you should be thinking that it is a cylindrical form.. don't think about the outlines, more how the shapes interact if that makes sense?

Hey, an up and coming artist who knows whats what! You are definitely on the right track. Keep studying those bones and muscles. I don't know if you have access to life drawing sessions, but try and get in there. Or, you might try the food court at a mall or something similar. Any place where people might sit for a bit and give you time to do quick sketches. Don't worry about getting so tight so soon - you're still working on the basics. Keep it up!

BlueMech - Thanks for pointing that out, Im keeping it in mind for my studies
sixBlade - Thanks for the C, sure Im up for a thunderdome like challenge, hope I will have improved a lot by then! Good point about the forms, I haven't really had a proper look at forms yet. Guess I could have a look at that soon.
Teigrob - Thank you, I had a look for life drawing classes near where I live the other day, but doesn't appear to be any. Thanks for the advice about the quick sketches.

I have a book with some figures in it, it doesnt have very many poses in it. Here are a few I copied from it. Plus I did a study of the ribcage and shoulder area. I had problems drawing this earlier, but then came back to it and tried again. This time I concentrated on the shapes, then thought about the details... worked a lot better!

Your studies look ace man, so keep those up. Eventually your work from your head will come up to par with them. I think it would be helpful for you to try and practice constructing the figure using basic shapes as placeholders for where you want to place things (circles, cubes, cylinders, whatever works for you). I'd also like to see some full figure studies from you as well.

Anyways, I love the rendering on your work, keep it up

Aesir - Thanks, I agree about using basic shapes for the figure construction, I don't use it all the time, but the results are better when I do.

top right face of most recent ones is very nice!

left ones nose is too long because the eyes are too high up on the face. also distance between mouth and nose is a little too big leaving no chin! maybe she just has a small chin (height-wise) though for that part!

definitely showing improvement already, keep it up! otherwise i'm gonna beat you in that thunderdome challenge!

I say go mad with concepts and stuff. The technical side can always be taught and learnt but imagination and expression is more important... in my mind anyway...

Hey Crystalline, nice anatomy studies. You should definitely continue working on them, and make sure to pay attention to the bones and muscles. Learning their general features and attachment points will automatically make you better at anatomy, even without any actual pen and paper practice. Though you'll need that too.

Also, make sure you watch your perspective. Some of your faces, like the top one on the last pic, last post, are distorted, which you should be wary of in the future. Setting up some perspective planes might help, though you can also just get away with eyeballing it carefully.
