DSG 771: Open-ended: THE THING COMES THROUGH THE PORTAL

    Is it
... a spaceship come through hyperjump?
... a monster come from some netherworld?
... a snackfood come out of machine?

You decide what this "thing" is, and you determine the nature of this "portal".

Don't settle for something half-assed... demand at least six-tenths of an ass from yourself and craft a mighty solution to this latest puzzler come courtesy of your trusty topic technician.

You can do it. I know you can.

Coming from the sewers like nothing more than a simple earthworm, this creature is infact an interdimensional invader, it and it's fellows are about to cause havoc among the earths biosphere.

Woe betide those who seek to summon the power of the elder gods. Probably not the most creative interpretation of todays topic, but I couldn't pass up the chance for tentacles

40 mins in Photoshop CS...I need to do less eating and more painting on my lunch break

Eriboss: cool concept, and some nice color...the horizon seems a little wierd though

hamsta-would you please please try to spend more time on you work? i mean the descriptions are nice and everything but only spending 30 minutes on each one doesn' get you anywhere. i'm sorry to say that, but after all those dsgs your pictures still have that muddy,can't-tell-what's-going-on look.sorry, but i have to say that.

Today's sketch, in accordance to the theme, more or less.
Legionnaire coming out of the fortified building of sorts, in post-apocalyptic-ish enviro.
5 hours... the perspective is eating my elbows...

mmm.. and now to dine and perhaps turn this into a more serious painting.

    ...
    haha, great stuff, sketchling!
Love that chair-ish warship and the tone.

nice Alexius... weird I thought this reminded me of something, and I have just realised that its your Antipodal evolution picture on DA.. which when i saw it a few weeks back, i didn't realise it was you, but now i do.. right so now all thats cleared up onto the pic:
Super perspective, can't see much fault in it really, I do find that the direction of the clouds, to the left especially kinda draws my eye down and away to the left a bit - when i first saw it, i thought the buildings were a space station, and the clouds were earth, its that curve that kinda bugs me.. anyway, thats just me being weird. Other than that its pretty spanky, only other thing is the dudes head... I cant quite work out whats goin on there.. is he looking to the left with like a crazy helmet on ?
    nice work tho man 8)

yep. He's got a shiny helmet on and is staring left-ward...
or right if you are in his shoes.
and yes... everything needs bout 20 more hours of work for a less rough look.

    Boogeyman!!

    (perspective: )

    Hunger and Goran: jeepers creepers!
Eriboss: I always enjoy your take on the topics.
Alexius: tight work there, man. But the topic seems to have taken the backseat here...
sketchling and mach: 2 things I wouldn't expect to come out of a portal. Hehe.

A lot of cool stuff today I have't mentioned. Goodnight you guys.

Eriboss, Sketchling, Alexius, and Lukavi, you guys have both inspired and completely intimidated me on this one. Just...wow.
However, I know undying praise is hardly helpful, so a few things I noticed:

Eriboss: This may be my own personal preference, but the cityline is bothering me a bit. I can see you made the line somewhat concave - still the horizontal cut in makes in the middle of the composition becomes a bit distractive. I'd like to see the curve of the cityline pushed more. I think that could help give the piece a little more flow. Maybe?

Alexius: The area above the figure's left shoulder is a bit confusing. To me, it looks as if the structure behind him is getting sucked into his shoulder. And Lukavi's right, the sketch theme is a bit obscured in this piece.

Lukavi: Yeah, the perspective is a bit off. I think the depth issues are really what's eating at this piece.

Hamsta: I really like your concept. Even without the description you gave, I think the simplicity of an earthworm coming from a sewer with a title such as "The Thing Comes Through the Portal" is great. I do have to agree with Carnifex, though. I know these are supposed to be quick drawings - but I think you could make these sketches pretty stellar if you gave them a little more time and really pushed the technique and concept.

Goran: Neato! I think some of the texture in the frame of the mirror should be somehow incorporated into the face. Then again, that may ruin the effect you're going for. Just a thought.

I spent way too long on this for what became the "finished" product. It isn't my most favorite drawing that I've ever done - but a good learning experience nonetheless.

A little too literal? This was planned to be a small thumbnail, but then I didn't have time to re-do it, so I just hacked in a little detail (i know the anatomy is off - no ref), and called it a day.

Very nice compositions goran, Alexius, and Eriboss.

    Here's mine...

About 1 hour and 45 minutes(There is no reason why it should have taken that long...oh well). Pen and photoshop.

    later...

the cobblestones are kinda flat, and could use a polish refractive sunlight hilights on em.
The vegetation on the left has an over-repeating pattern, and should be slapped with some lighter green brushes.
the blob in the portal could use some black, shadowy shape forming in it.
otherwise tiz a neat ass sketch!

    @Alexis

thanks for the crit. I originaly had a small stream, or run off of water coming from the portal and flowing towards the viewer, but it didnt look very good. but yea the stones are flat looking. i wasnt working at a high rez (only 120 ppi), and each time i tried doing high lights, or wet spots on the stones, it came out looking strange. any ideas?

great idea on the shadowy figure in the portal. ill do that for sure!

the left vegitation was rushed , ill go back and clean that up some more.

    again thanks a bunch
