Corky- thanks for the comment/crit! I've been looking around for places/classes holding figure drawing, and just found one today. It's once a week for 3 hours but I have work meetings every other week on the same day so... funny how life works out. I'm definitely going to try to attend.

Mr. Blonde - I'm glad you like the redesigns. Funny story, I was flipping through my sketchbook in class and the kid sitting next to me asks if I know about CA. He said awhile ago that there was a Thunderdome redesigning 80's video games or something. I wasn't browsing then, but I wish I could find the designs to see what they looked like. I was just excited about finding someone else that even knew about CA. And thanks for the encouraging words!
















First proof of my Octopus print



2nd proof of the print [sorry about the quality, we didn't have any newsprint around and had to use tracing paper, thus the reflections]. I'm going to knock out the bottom so it's white with a black top. You'll see soon enough.

Jett- thanks for the comments man! I definitely need to do more studies, reading and learning anatomy is difficult when going hand in hand. I'm glad you like'em! And I'll be finishing cutting the print soon, and then run the editions.

But for now, I gotta study.

As far as studies go, here's one of a skull using a picture from the "Official Prague Workshop Pictures" thread. Hope you enjoy it!

Here's the sketch I was working on with colors, etc. The scan didn't come out well but oh well. I don't think i'm going to work on it anymore but if there are major problems with it that people point out, I might fix it.

That fat kid - i'm glad you like the skull study. One of my teachers in high school always said to make the dark parts dark, and the light parts light. But I always tend to over value some things and botch the sketch.

Found a small mirror laying around work so I took it, figured I could try some more self portraits. Accidentally made myself look younger and more childish, I guess that's just how it goes.

This sketch is with me and a friend. Starts by folding a piece of paper into sections, this one had 6. And then you take turns drawing each little section, making sure to have connecting lines down to the next section.

got into observation mode, it's almost addicting

I went to the Museum of Fine Arts for the first time the other day, and saw Sargent's work. And oh my god it was amazing. I was in the room with his paintings and was just standing there in awe. You don't realize how big they are, and how great they are until you see them in person. I also saw Casatt's work and Homer's work for the first time, and whew, it shows you how much you still have to learn. And that's why we have CA

and another 3 section sketch between me, a friend, and my girlfriend. Funny thing is, she is never one to get down on one of these, but we did. And her sketch, even if it's simple, is actually kind of disturbing.


That fat kid - the kind words are appreciated. I've finally gotten into the so-called groove of sketching everyday. I'm actually afraid of either: 1.) Sketching too much and not worrying about school work or
2.) losing this momentum and not wanting to sketch for a long while.
Either way, I guess what i've gotten myself into is good for now. And also, if you look at the eye studies, you'll see your notes written in the corner. They really help out a lot.

good effort you got here. i think its good your doing the pencil studies to learn, but the pen drawings i like a lot better. theyve got more attitude, more balls to them. good that your doing both though, each teaches you something else.

tensai - thanks for the encouragement man! I actually like my pencil sketches better than the pen, but it's because i'm afraid of the pen... but I don't know. Gotta just keep at it I guess. I'm glad you like the sketches, good comments push me like vanity pushes at a college girl.

that fat kid - no need to apologize man! and funny thing! I actually got some drapery studies here I did tonight. And those sketches of gestures are just whatever's laying up there in the attic we call a mind. Folds kick my ass too, so you're not the only one. I'm glad you enjoy the octopus sketch, i've always had an infatuation with them, squids as well. The thing is, they're easier to render than us humans. But what are you gonna do other than practice. And you know what kicks my ass man? Scotch. You should join me.

Your incorporation of the graffiti aesthetic is fun to look at, however I get a feeling that there is a tension in your line quality that is somewhat stagnating the life and fluidity of your drawings. Are you usually relaxed when you draw? Do you lean into your drawings, or do you sit back as you play? Relaxing not only keeps the line alive and flowing, but also allows you to see the "bigger picture" so to speak, so that you have proper proportions, perspective, etc.

If you can, try taking a figure drawing class. If one is not available to you, then just try to find a teacher or any person that understands the art of figural representation. Good figure drawing entails supple yet accurate control of line in general, and any person who is good at it can give you some very helpful pointers in improving your technique.

I hope this is of some use to you. Really, the best way to get better is to just plow onward into the future with a pencil and paper (keep drawing!)

looks like you're getting the hang of rendering with the pencil, but i think it would be good to work on your line work, it seem a bit scratchy and i know they are sketches but still
once you got that down i think your sketches will be super good
your pens are dope, very unique

theshunzun - thanks for the comment! When I sketch, I get in close AND look back, one can't fully realize a full picture until they do so. As far as the tension and relaxation of the pencil, it's usually both. I tend to relax when I start, trying to stay loose. But as the sketch progresses, I tense up as the rendering goes fully. Thanks for the tips too, they push me towards the finish line.

daqu - thanks for the crits! I've been trying to work on the quality of my line, keeping it loose and smooth. When I don't know what i'm going to sketch, the lines tend to get all 'chicken scratchy.' Glad you like the penwork too!

And finally, a couple of shits from the weekend, it seems like I get more sketching done during the week. Apologies for not updating in a couple of days.

Been really busy lately, so tired that I feel like a dinosaur.. ancient.

That fat kid - thanks for the encouragement! The faces were elongated because I wanted to try distorting them. Got a little bored with drawing faces within human proportions so I just wanted to try it out. Gotta work more within realism before I can break the boundaries. You get me?

Me and a friend were talking and he needed to clean his house, so I came up with the idea about monster dust bunnies





I might work more with the idea later.
