Oishiiniku's Sketchy Morsels. September 27 - Long Time Never Update!

Howdy. I've been lurking on CA.org for quite a while now. Finally got my arse in gear and started a sketchbook. I've been drawing in earnest for a bit over a year now. I try to do something at least a few times a week. Anyway, I'll try to keep things updated as often as I can. Here's some things from the last week or so.

Did these at work today at lunch and while my computer generated precious normal maps. Not done anything with markers before (in this case biro and whiteboard marker), but really enjoyed these:

Been reading Hellboy and 100 Bullets lately and that's pretty evident!

Here's some pencil stuffs from my crappy a5 jotter. Note to self - must stop drawing half-arsed heads and do more studies!!!

That's all for now. Hopefully I'll have more at the weekend. Enjoy those chocolate eggs, y'all!

    sankyuu, niku.

Wow, amazing start! Welcome to CA!

Really good style, solid grasp on anatomy, great rendering... I can't wait to see what else you post!

Again, welcome to CA and keep it up.

    Thanks for the replies fellahs!

IanE: Many thanks for the warm welcome!

    Redehlert: Ta very much!

    Here's a small update:

    A page of eenk:

    Scruffy pencils:

I think I need to be more systematic in how I approach learning anatomy. Not sure I'm picking up as much as I could be.

Anyway, hopefully I can post again in a few days.

    Good evening.

Flaskpost: Graff you say? Thanks very much!

Xaya: Cheers! Women without ref is one of my many hundred achilles' heels. I've done a few for this update tho. Just need to do about a thousand million more...

    Another small update:

A page of non ref lady bits. Strangely enough, with some of these I've subconsciously mimicked the poses of ref pics I've done lately. Not sure if that's a good or bad thing!

Random stuff. That ref lady has wonky eyes. Need to draw tons more ladies...

Had a go at doing an environment sketch. It's drawn from a photo of Ta Prohm at Angkor, one of the most stupendously cool places on earth. I'd never really tried an environment pic before, so I enjoyed doing it even if I'm not at all happy with how it turned out. Bah!

    that's all for now.

Yeah, man, this stuff rocks. I really love you heads. I really need a lot of work on heads, and you look like you have got them down pretty good. So, I was wondering, what you process is/what stuff did you use to learn to draw them?

I'd just finished typing this the first time when a bug landed on the power button on my keyboard and i inadvertently pushed it and turned off the computer whilst trying to squish the insect. Serves me right I guess..

Thanks for all the kind words!

Cakeypigdog: What a funny name you have! Thanks for the generous comments and for all the encouragement you've given me since I started at FRD. Can't thank you enough mate! Now get yer arse in gear and start a book of your own!

    Newman: Thanks mister boss man!

Badger: Taverymuch. You're right - I need tons more rendering practice. I'm going to leave the big scary world of colour alone until I'm more confident with my line. Good at anatomy? Pah! It's been a struggle just to amass the tiny amount of anatomical knowledge I've gotten so far. So yeah, lots of practice is the answer! I'd say Loomis and Civardi have been the most helpful books for me.

Sanby: Cheers! As for drawing heads, I've studied Loomis's stuff religiously for the past year or so. You really can't go wrong if you follow his approach. Also, I try and analyze the heads drawn by artists I really admire (Terada, Eduardo Risso, Marko et al.) and work out why they work so well. Finally, accomodating the features of different ethnicities, age ranges, physiques etc. into your heads gives you good variety and stops you from drawing the same head over and over again, which can happen very easily, for me at least.

Amadorl:Thanks fella! I'll try and keep the updates coming.

I've been drawing a lot at work the past week so haven't done much in the evenings. Here's some stuff from the weekend though.

Thought it might look good to do this in blue with marker outline, but dammit if I wasn't wrong!

From a picture in the obits a while back:

First real attempt at drawing from life other than my hands. SP about an hour or so. The light source was fairly weak, but I should have pushed the values more:

    Lips and nudies:

That's all for now. I'm off to read Vernon God Little - a fantastic book!

Aww I've been pretty slack lately. That's mainly cos I've been doing a lot of drawing at work so I've felt a bit doodled-out by the time I've got home. No lame excuses though - I need to get back into the habit of drawing everyday dammit!!

    Cheers for the replies.

RES: Ta very much. I'm liking your work too. Keep it up!

brkofdon: Cheers fellah! I'm a big fan of your sketchbook. I could definitely take a leaf out of your book in terms of variety and dedication. I'm trying to diversify, just don't want to try to learn too many things at once. That's a poor excuse though, right? heheh.

First up something a bit different. I've been doodling armour since watching Steamboy a few days ago (fantastic design, shame about the story and characters!). Did this in pencil n' ink then a quick colour job in photoshop:

Was good fun so I may do another soon... Here's the original thumbnail enlarged a bit:

Used ref from a skate mag for these. Removed clothes to try and work out the bodies underneath and boards for the hell of it!

    Bit of back study:

    Random schtuff:

2 minute hand while my computer contemplated working for me (or not).

That's all for now. Will try to update a bit quicker next time!

its good you are updating! thanks for being
a fan of my work, i guess we got something
n common your work is great!

really strong studies and cool armoured character.
im not the best with coloring metal armour, so you
got that on me! i wanna see more of your
    concepts! good stuff.

the only crit is your hand sketch..the thumb area
looks a bit awkward to me. that first bone
juts out a bit too much...?

Brkofdon: Thanks again for the kind words, maybe I'll catch you on OC some time? As for the hand - yeah it's a bit off. Was literally a two minute thing, but bad anatomy is bad anatomy. Need to do some more hand studies...

Couple more things for tonight. Nowt special.

Did this in Photoshop. Pic from a magazine of a Vietnamese kid born with deformities due to Agent Orange poisoning. Pretty crazy...

And some non ref ladies. Drawing the legs too long a lot of the time (damn you Danger Girl!). In fact, these are off all over the place. Need to do tons more of these.

    More soon.

I've been feeling a bit uninspired the past week or so... It's weird because I definitely want to draw but can't decide on what I should do. I dunno, I think I'll try my hand at something a bit different tomorrow. Here's some bits and pieces from the last few days.

    Doodles:

Hopefully I can get back into things and do some better work later in the week.

i see alot of anatomy studies here thats good i should probably do some more studies myself. but i do have a suggestion for you, maybe you could do some human skull studies. the faces you drew lately dont seem as good as your other stuff.
