those monkeys are what i would consider to be the best so far. they have nice movement and good lines. im not sure about the rest as they pretty much all seem like scribbles. i also enjoy that owl, it has a nice life about it with some decent accuracy in the lines/values youve laid.

i would certainly encourage you to emphasize much more on the linework that you have. try to stay away from the scribbling that youve done with those small birds. while that may work for some people, i dont think you've quite gotten to that point yet. keep practicing!

Good to see you are starting a sketchbook!

The zoosketches are nice, do more of them and your lines will become more confident. Personally I think zoosketches are a good way to learn capturing shape and movement with a few strokes only, cause the animals are moving a lot from my experience. I would even suggest to do such tudies with a brushpen or a ballpoint - that helps a lot.

I really like that frog -nice colors - his head is a bit too bigand his feet a little bit out of perspective for a real frog, but it's stylized and doesn't really matter for this picture. Good one.

I'd love to see more studies and life drawing from you!

the frog is nice

considering the doodles, i'd say you'd be more "daring" when you draw. just let your hand (no not hand, but your whole arm) flow while your eyes are on your subject most of the time. use just lines and as much lines as possible, don't mind the details, try the capture the general feel and silhouette. don't be afraid to do mistakes and don't erase. it is easy to say but hard to do i know but your lines will be more and more confident with time.

i don't know what size paper these are but the drawings seems to be very small (thumbnail kinda). try to work on larger sizes (helps the flowing thing)

I loved the frog! It's just great! Has a lot of character for a frog. (thats a compliment ).

From the figures you posted I can tell that once you master the basic proportions, you'll do great! Follow people's advice and practice a lot.

I just finished a zoo sketch trip, too! How big are those pages? I love your quick ink studies, and the bigger ones of the figures. The shading of the face turned out well on the bottom girl.

I suppose the best way to work those ink ones are just keep doing them over and over, since you can't really do any guidelines or anything. I know nib inking is unruly, as I've dabbled with it a bit? How often are you supposed to dip them? I really know nothing about it, but would like to do more since I own the tools. Tips?

The mantis is awesome. You could probably go at it with a more compressed type of charcoal and really boost its contrast way up. There are some places looking good (like the highlight on the wing and the face) that could really pop out more as a result.

my tip would be - watch ur values
u tend to put realy darks where its only "relatively" really dark
its a common mistake, i guess
so watch that
or it will KILL YOU

Wertle I use an A4 sketchbooks, the scans are most of the page. I dip about twice a second only goes to inches or so before running out

Man, that ink wash is really cool - it really seems like you captured the light with it. I haven't tried that medium for a while, I think I'll do it again. Anyway, the one thing I thought I might mention is that you tend to make the (model's) left upper arm too short - in other words, the elbow is too high. It's really the only major proportion error that I see right off the bat, and it's in both the earlier ink drawing and the more recent wash. If I stand up, my elbow reaches about a half inch below the top of my hip bone. If you spot the bottom of the ribcage and the top of the hip in your drawings, you'll see what I mean.

Just a suggestion - you might try some master copies, even of some of the other artists here on ca. Sometimes it's surprising what you learn from just a few of those.

Hey Hamsta! Already I am seeing some big improvements in your work!

I like the catalogue figure studies and your inkwash best - it shows you're really paying attention to forms, which is what your first zoo studies were lacking. Definitely keep up the washes and the gestures!

Heya Hamsta.

I'm used to checking out your DSG entries. As far as I've ever seen they're always computer stuff. I'm impressed by the stuff you've done here in traditional mediums. I'll be watching the thread reguarly. Very cool.

The pen stuff is my fave, but that's probably because I suck when there's no eraser involved (oh sweet electric eraser, how I adore thee!).

hey Hamsta nice to finally see some work of yours. Love your comittment to the craft really really cools.

Try to do this a little bit. Try to take a photo ref and turn it upside down and you draw it upside down also. that'll help you to really see the shape of the figure. try to identify all of the negative space in the pic, the shape of the negative space the motion of the body all the construction stuff you gotta think about think about it. Think and try to notice everything you're doing. This will help out your work a whole bunch.

Love the style of your ink stuff. i kinda dont want to see that go away lol.
