Hey Purb - Those last 2 portraits are really nice! You've really come a long way in this sketchbook. All the work you put into it is really paying off. Just compare the sumo guys on this page with the ones back on the first page.

Yeah I want to go soooo bad. But I had already told my friends in VA 3-4 weeks ago that I would accept the position, and they have really gone through a lot for me to make sure that my transition from NY goes smooth as a baby's ass. But hell man...I will apply again...no matter what. And if I do not make it, Im still going. There is talk of us going to Japan for our honeymoon. I would love to stay at some ryokan's there. They look awesome. Ill keep you posted my man

are certainly one of the better portraits you have done so far. ill be honest though and say i personally prefer your analogue stuff up till now. i do understand if the digital stuff is something you want to try out to get good at it, or something that you might simply enjoy. but why not get some watercolours or pastels and get messy with those? im sure youd love it...

sorry we couldnt meet yet. when is your next time in tokyo? id love to join an existing figure drawing group with some peeps that now what to look for so that you can learn more than just by yourself. all ive seen is groups of bachan tachi drawing flowers and paying ichimanen per month...

t - thx man. i also prefer traditional stuff, and one reason is that it is portable and easy to find a place to do it, and i just really like it. i havent spent much time on digital at all (compared to my traditional time), and i think its for that reason that i havent progressed as much as i would have liked to. one reason that i like it is that is NOT messy and its quick, and i dont know why but i never really got into painting traditionally, never really rivaled my love for pen and pencil. its really something that i need to get over, and maybe while im in tokyo i might start working with them or something. but either way, i do need to keep working my digital stuff, or i wont get better. and i need to learn some things in order to get better at it, really need to start pushing myself to do things i wouldnt just normally do. i could definitely use a course or something. a figure drawing group would be awesome, and maybe i also should start drawing flowers, i think that would be a good change of pace for me. we'll see what we can do. dekiru dake yarou ne?

yeah, i originally liked that idea as well, but i didnt think it said "welcome" as much as something personally involving the viewer. i liked my compositional idea for the one i did better, cause there was more stuff in it. but, its all a learning experience. it was one of the first times i really thought a lot about composition. maybe it was too busy, i dunno. i had fun though, and i learned something, so thats what matters. thx for stopping by my book; ill see you in yours sometime soon. take care.

purbs - first one is mighty nice! In fact lately your color scheme is getting much better.

second one has a wonky ear/perspective problem. It looks as if the ear is continuing back to the left towards a skull that isnt there. Maybe flesh out the skull more to the left in your mind to give the ear more grounding.

tetsuooooooOOOOO - thx man, glad you think so. the ear, i needed to give him more head in the back, needed to work more on aligning the planes of his head, cause he's got a narrow head, i just made it too narrow in back. thx for the heads up, definitely gotta watch out for that in my next pictures. thx man, see you soon!

Like I said in the doo thread, I like that beetle - shows form and has good edges. Some of your paints seem to have almost arbitrary edges you know? I might do some grayscale paints and focus just on form, edges and brush technique perhaps?

yeah, on that one, i was paying attention to the edges, ive been trying to do that more lately, cause i usually never did. youre definitely right, it does make the pics much better...just gotta keep practicing it. i think i might try the grayscale thing, i just havent had much free time to draw lately. gonna start to hit up the peer project, i did one of the old exercises, but i wanna start up with the new one. hope to be as good with color as you are someday. thx for stoppin by and for the b'day wishes...cheers! oldnew - yeah, i have been drawing a bunch, but not really scanning and making them web-ready, cause that takes the most time. ill try to do that more often, just work takes a lot of time. anyway, ill see you around, and glad you like it, just gotta finish it now.

shin - nah man, thx for stoppin by here. yep, its from life. been going to a life drawing class here with tensai (and mmmmike!) sometimes over here in tokyo, and i find that im improving tons. need to make sure im keeping up with my basics with anatomy and stuff, but life drawing can only complement that. nice stuff on yours too dude, and ill see if i can upload some more of my life drawing stuff. take care.

t - thx man! glad you like them. ill definitely be doing many more of them, so ill definitely show when i do. in general, im going for a semi-realistic approach, such that the kids know right away what i'm trying to draw or make. if they can do that, then ive done my job. senshuumatsu okayama ken ni kekkonshiki wo mi ni itta yo, suggokatta desu. presento to shite shin fufu no nigaoe wo kaite, yokatta desu. miseteageru yo. mata konshuumatsu aou? class ni iku ka? mata ne.

i went to a japanese wedding this past weekend; this was the lovely couple. and this was my present to the lovely couple (4 hours). hope they liked it.
